Take this for what it's worth as it's coming from a beat writer, but.....

"Sammy Morris could be a goal-line vulture for the Patriots this season, according to beat writer John Tomase (Boston Herald).

Impact: New England could reportedly look to limit Maroney's workload inside the ten-yard line at least early in the season as his shoulder heals up."

This actually makes some sense. Maroney is one of the top backs that I have been and will continue to avoid for now.

IMO... if Maroney looks good this pre-season game and has no shoulder pain...forget this thread. This pre-season game is huge for Maroney owners.

Tomase is a good writer but you have to take info like this with a grain of salt. The Pats are very tight-lipped and I find it hard to believe that info of this sort is coming from the coaching staff which is all that matters. While this could be the case my guess is it's based more on speculation. Right now the Pats have three RBs that can handle this duty in Maroney, Morris and Evans (Faulk is also used down there in certain packages) and I would not be surprised if all three will get some looks near the stripe.

So far I have not been overly impressed with Morris this preseason. He looks like a backup RB. On the flipside Kevin Faulk looks terrific and already seems to be in midseason form. It's still real early but if Maroney went down for an extended period of time I can't say I'd be too comfortable with Morris being anything more than a member of a RBBC.

No link because I heard this on Sirius NFL Radio, but Belichick said he has been trying to get Sammy Morris on the Patriots for a long time. While he may not be a true goalline vulture, I wouldn't be surprised if he gives Maroney a breather on more than a few series in each game.

As veteran running back Corey Dillon's release by the New England Patriots became imminent this week, the team didn't waste any time targeting talent that would help fill the void.

The Patriots moved quickly, beating three other teams to the door of former Dolphins RB Sammy Morris and quickly arranging a visit on the first day of free agency this past Friday.

"It was really a credit to (general manager) Scott Pioli and (head coach) Bill Belichick," Morris' agent, Mark Slough, told Scout.com Saturday evening.

Slough said the Patriots called just minutes after midnight to arrange a flight for Morris and his wife to visit New England. Roughly 10 minutes after the plans were confirmed, the Kansas City Chiefs called. And they learned that they would have to wait their turn.

"That's how close this crazy game of free agency is," Slough said.

And by the time the Eagles and the Jets called on Saturday, Morris was getting ready to sign the contract that Scout.com's Adam Caplan has reported to be a four-year deal worth $7 million. Morris will get $5 million in the first two years of deal.

Slough wasn't surprised by the Patriots interest in his client, and he thinks the signing is going to be a great fit for everyone involved.

"They've always respected Sammy's versatility and the fact that he's consistently been one of the top special teams players on his team no matter where he played," he said. "And Bill Belichick has done a great job of getting the best out of his players' strengths and I'm sure that will be the case with Sammy as well."

Shortly before his whirlwind experience of the last couple of days, Morris answered some questions about his experience in Miami this past year, turning 30 years old, and much more during an interview with Scout.com's Ed Thompson.

Whether or not Tomase is a good writer is moot really. No one knows what Belichick is going to do until after the games. Which is why it's so hard to predict the fantasy stars from week to week on the Pats. The only sure thing is that Brady is going to play the whole game. Other than that Belichick will give playing time to whomever it is that gives him the best chance to win in that particular game. If Maroney is moving the chains and feeling strong then he will be given the opportunity to stay in there. If he is showing signs of slowing down and not hitting the holes, Belichick will toss Morris or Faulk into the game and ride them for all they have. The bottom line is win baby. No one player above the other. That's why us homers can't stand picking any Patriots.

Thanks for posting this Joe. The Pats love players like Morris who are versatile - he basically can fill 3 spots at once. 1) backup RB, 2) backup FB, 3) special teams player. It's a perfect fit at a relatively low price of $5M over 2 years.
