San Diego defense (1 Viewer)

What's their outlook this year, and week 1 at KC? We score defense with yards against and points against, so real world outlook is more important than the old-school fantasy numbers.

Drafted them as my backup D the other day after looking at their starting schedule:

KC

JAX

SEA

ARI

OAK

STL

I like those odds.

I've been targeting SD as a sleeper defense because of their schedule. Six games against the AFC West and four games against the NFC West.

grabbed them in several leagues base on schedule. Im not sure if the turnovers or sacks will be there, but the early competition isnt all that tough

yeah, i've been eyeing them as well since i saw the schedule (especially the first 2 months) and thought, wow, they don't have the personnel they used to but they have a sweet set-up at the start of the season. then i saw this tidbit this morning from rotoworld.

"In 52 preseason dropbacks against opposing first-team quarterbacks, the Chargers' defense has generated just two quarterback hits.

One resulted in a 33-yard pass and the other was negated by a roughing the passer flag. We don't doubt that Shaun Phillips will bring heat in the regular season, but Larry English has shown nothing and Shawne Merriman isn't remotely a good bet to regain pre-injury form. Avoid this fantasy defense."

looks like the stoppable force (patsy teams on the schedule) vs the movable object (SD's toothless D).

Yep, in all my leauges that are deep enough for 2 defenses, I have snatched these guys up just because of the schedule, and how they have looked so far in preseason. Not sure I am trusting them yet as my only defense, but there is opportunity there.

Personally, I'm not going to take the pre-season that seriously. They're playing vanilla schemes with no game planning. If it doesn't work, I drop 'em in week 3 or 4. At worst, I don't think they'll hurt you and they also have some good return potential on special teams.

they are going off the board at around DST10-DST12 so I don't think you can really call them a sleeper as that is starter worthy in a 12 team league.....A couple things stand out for me.....the SD offense is going to put up a ton of points against the teams they play meaning that those teams will have to try and keep up....hopefully that opens up some opportunities for turnovers and maybe taking a few back to the house....Sproles is also a huge benefit.....I will probably just ride them for better or worse for the first 9 weeks since they have a week 10 bye.....you really couldn't ask for much better of a schedule......my only fear is that SD will win a bunch of games, but they may be shootouts with a ton of points and yards given up.......

I think they'll be good for this kind of league - the offense should keep them off the field more than they have the last couple of years as Matthews should return the run game to viability and therefore let them sustain longer drives. Their schedule seems filled with average to poor opposing offenses (with a few notable exceptions).I don't see them having a ton of sacks or turnovers, even though Rivera is obviously greatly expanding the blitz packages (they have already shown quite a bit of this in preseason). They actually could be below average in these areas. The guys just aren't generating much pressure even when they send 6 or 7. Maybe that'll change when Merriman gets back on the field, but I doubt it. In IDP Weddle could be a good pick as they seem to be turning him loose a bit more now that Cromartie (who was a bit of a freelancer that had to be covered for) is gone.As a defense they're overpriced in the subscriber contest (as an example of a ruleset where they aren't a good defense to have).

using them as my backup defense.

drafted the vikings defense but picked up SD off the waivers.

will play SD week 1 against KC (vs. Vikings at Saints) and week 4 vs ARI (vikings on bye).
