*** San Francisco 49ers *** 2-2, next week vs Cardinals. Warner day to day (46 Viewers)

Deebo calf strain, out “multiple weeks”
Who, if anyone, is the beneficiary? Is Jennings worth a pickup, or will they just redistribute more targets to Kittle and Aiyuk?
Kittle, Jennings, juice.

To lesser degree Mason, as he’s likely to
Inherit those carries.

There’s no 1:1 replacement.
Would you drop Bigsby, Chase B or CWatson for Jennings? Asking for a friend :clyde:

If CMC was playing, I wouldn't rush to do it, but with both of them out, he's going to get targets. I think a solid #3 WR play.

IMO they give more to Conley & some of the other scrubs, while leaning on Aiyuk more.

Jennings gets a bump, yes. But IMO not enough of one to put in FF lineups with anything resembling consistency. Might have a spike week here or there, but better to use in Best Ball.

Chances are good most teams have a better WR3 on their roster than Jennings.

Conley is a scrub who gets his 1 target a game. He might get 2 now. Jennings is a big target in the red zone too. I could see a 6/70 game. They just don't throw to Mason much, so it's basically Aiyuk and Kittle right now. Jennings will get his while Deebo is out.

Looked really good in the preseason.

My point is there’s no 1 replacement for Deebo. He’s irreplaceable, because you’re replacing receptions+carries.

IMO Niners will distribute. There’s no great WW addition.

Agree about not replacing Deebo but Jennings has 9 targets in two games with Deebo so my money is the guy getting the most targets now will get the bigger portion of Deebos targets.

Still, Purdy managed to throw for 319 yards. Next Gen Stats has a stat called expected completion percentage, which takes into account everything from how much separation a receiver has on a given throw to how far from the quarterback he is to how much pressure the passer is under. Next Gen’s prediction for Purdy was 60.4 percent, one of the lowest expectations for any quarterback in Week 2. He ended up beating that mark by a long shot in completing 77.8 percent of his throws.

link. supports my thesis that Purdy actually had a pretty good game.

The pick was bad. Like bad bad. The fumble wasn’t great either.

That said, he wasn’t why they lost. special teams, and most of the defense except Warner was why they lost. Warner was an A+. Rest of the D was, well, a D.

I don't know why this franchise can't field a decent special teams unit. Seems like they've been awful for 25+ years.

John Chapman:

49ers reactions after two weeks.

-Best corner on the team is DMO.

-DT Depth chart should be
1 Collins
2 Elliot
3 Givens
4 Hargrave

-Fred Warner is the best player on the team and it doesn't seem close!

-Brock is still Brock but seems to have deleted the check down part of his game and is holding the ball too long.

-Special Teams is on par with last 8 years which is a bottom 5 coached unit.

-Jordan Mason is a top 10 back in the NFL.

-The 3 starters holding the team back the most are Jake Brendel, Javon Hargrave and Brandon Aiyuk.

-Still a very good team just not gelling consistently on all 3 phases of the game.

Oof. We need Feliciano back. Or maybe give Zakelj a shot in the meantime, he can't be any worse!!!

John Chapman:

The 49ers biggest issue isn't Aiyuk, CMC being out or McKivitz but Jake Brendel!
I hate doing these videos but it isn't being talked about enough. All these are just from the first half mind you (video in link):

Time to give the rookie a few snaps.

From Matt Barrows:

Will we see more of Jacob Cowing integrated into the offense while Samuel is out to fill the “gadget” play role (WR sweeps, bubble screens, quick slants, etc.)?

When Cowing muffed the punt in Minnesota, I thought, “Well, that’s the last we’ll see of Cowing for a while.” After all, the 49ers weren’t using him on offense, he botched his primary assignment — fielding punts cleanly — and the 49ers have a reliable veteran returner, Trent Taylor, they can call up from the practice squad.

Samuel’s injury, however, might change things. Without him or McCaffrey, the 49ers need someone dynamic who can stretch the field horizontally.

That’s Cowing’s forte. He’s good on the sweeps and screens that you suggested. You can envision him lining up in or motioning through the backfield like the team did with Ray-Ray McCloud the last two years (and which Cowing did in college). It wouldn’t need to be a lot of plays. But he could be a nice complement to Jordan Mason’s more straight-ahead style.

This is my 1000th post complaining about the failure to pour any resources at all into the OL. Shanahan's super power is making all pro backs out of undrafted guys, yet he still blows 3rd and fourth rounders on RBs every year instead of drafting any OL.

"No. It's just one muffed punt. He's been as natural of a catcher as we've had in our 8 years here. Everyone muffs one here and there. You just hope that was the end of it. " - Kyle Shanahan, on Jacob Cowing returning punts.

Sounds like Cowing will continue as the returner

WR Deebo Samuel is only Niner who will miss todays practice.

Everybody else (not counting IR guys) will be full participation.

When it rains, it pours. :wall:

No Kittle at practice today due to hamstring tightness. His status for Sunday is in question.

Also, Charvarius Ward not practicing due to knee and hamstring issues.

We may be without CMC, Deebo, Kittle, and Ward Sunday. For 🤬 sake!

49ers have so little young cheap background talent any amount of talent that is out is a huge hole

Save your keystrokes? lol

Lombardi:

If George Kittle can’t play, Eric Saubert and Jake Tonges will have to carry the load at TE. Brayden Willis would likely get the practice squad call up.

If Charvarius Ward can’t play, vet Rock Ya-Sin might allow SF to hold the floor but rookie Renardo Green did enter in a couple dime packages last week.

I expect a HEAVY dose of Mason this week, but his workload isn't sustainable and there's nobody behind him on the depth chart that will scare anyone. We really need another RB until CMC is back IMO.

Bump Aiyuk and Jennings Sunday, and I wonder if we will see Cowing get some snaps, if for nothing else than stretch the field with his speed to open up the middle of the field a bit, and who knows, maybe he gets behind the DBs and makes a big play. This week is as good as any to get him some reps.

Man, if Pearsall wasn't on IR I'd feel a lot better. I bet he plays week 5.

Sorensen says Talanoa Hufanga has been getting snaps on the scout team in recent weeks and that he's looked sharp in practice this week. "It's like he hasn't missed a beat."

It's cathartic.

Chris Foerster says Jake Brendel was better in Week 2 than he was in Week 1 and is a "much better option" than Ben Bartch and Nick Zakelj at center.

Oh bull####!

Cowing szn loading.....

John Lynch on KNBR says that 49ers rookie WR Jacob Cowing may see some action on offense against this week against the Rams on top of his punt returner duties.

The 49ers injury report for Sunday against the Rams:

QUESTIONABLE: Nick Bosa (rib), and Charvarius Ward (knee/hamstring)

DOUBTFUL: George Kittle (hamstring)

OUT: Deebo Samuel (calf)

Isaac Guerendo to get some carries Sunday.

Shanahan:

"We're excited about Isaac," Shanahan said. "He's getting closer and closer to getting some more opportunities. We're down two backs with Christian and Elijah [Mitchell]. JP [Jordan Mason] has been doing a hell of a job these last two weeks and his stamina, the way he's been running, he hasn't needed to come out much, especially with Deebo in there. But now with Deebo not an option, Isaac is the next man up."

So happy I don’t care. I’ll care again when Shanahan is gone and he plagues another fan base. Had a window with an awesome cheap QB, a top coach capitalizes, he didn’t, he sucks!

With the stretch of games coming up against SEA, KC, DAL, TB, SEA, GB, BUF, I don't know if we make the playoffs this season.

There was a reason I was so crushed last season, I knew the window was almost closed. It’s now closed, Brock needs to get paid. Brock can do it, Shanny can’t. 2 years of pain, which I’ll watch from a distance, then that chump will be gone.

I don't think its closed, but we aren't winning anything this season.

Sequence of events:

Bell dropped perfectly thrown deep ball, Moody missed FG, Ward blown coverage, excellent punt with lots of hang time and terrible punt coverage, bad defense, 1-2.

@Wingnut it’s closed. You’ll be in a happier place when you reach acceptance… I speak from experience.

Huge salaries in marginal players and no depth after mostly terrible drafting

This.

We got very lucky hitting some bullseyes with the drafts, but overwhelmingly missed on a lot.

Chickens finally coming home to roost.

Personally, I still love Brock, obviously Fred, but everything else is a disappointment. By the end of this wasted year, the guru will grind what’s left of CMC to a stump.
