*** San Francisco 49ers *** discussion thread (9 Viewers)

Fair to say that #49ers WR Deebo Samuel wouldn't mind a shot at being a regular kick returner. He was one of 10 players getting work there today and said he "for sure" would like to handle that role:

"I feel like it’s going to be a lot of touchdowns coming from not just us but a lot of teams as well," Samuel said. "I’m pretty sure other people got a lot of skill guys who are really good in space as well."

49ers kicker Jake Moody has been excellent this training camp. He made his first 10 kicks before finally missing from 46 yards today. Moody promptly backed up to 51 yards and drilled it. He's 11-of-12.

Today's practice was a lighter session for the 49ers, who will practice for the fourth straight day on Saturday before taking Sunday off (this is unusual; last season they went three days on and one day off).

Ji'Ayir Brown made the nicest play today, an interception of a deep Brock Purdy attempt for Deebo Samuel.

I don't think it gets any better than being an NFL kicker. What's that, 12 FG attempts in three days. I hope they have a rest day planned soon.

:blackdot:

I have completely tuned football out since the SB. My wife follows the 49ers on IG, she’s always saying “xyz” and I’ve been responding “I don’t care, just stop.”

In the next 2 weeks or so, it’ll be time to tune back in.

As a fan, this last SB might’ve been the worst lost ever. Haven’t rewatched, haven’t discussed, almost mentally blocked it.

It is almost time to move on. With that, until they make me care as much as I did last season, I will not be as invested. I come into this season basically expecting them to miss the playoffs, anything above that is a friendly bonus.

As big of a fan as I am, it's still just a form of entertainment. Last season was a lot of fun despite the tough OT loss in the Super Bowl. Two exciting comeback wins in the playoffs and a couple stupid mistakes away from a Super Bowl win. I was over it pretty quickly. NFC should be a lot of fun with Philly, Detroit and Green Bay looking strong. Will stomp that weak assssssssss team in Seattle a couple times.

Enjoy the season

Couple of key OL injuries with Spencer Burford having a broken hand (expected to miss 3 weeks) and Jon Feliciano dealing with a knee issue.

Clear opportunity now for Dominick Puni to get first-team reps and maybe even more.

The three 49ers draft picks who have been missing practice — Ricky Pearsall, Isaac Guerendo and Jacob Cowing — have the same issue: hamstring strain.

Pearsall is expected back at practice on Monday.

Nick Wagoner:

Training camp day 4 notes and observations:

- A little longer session today as the Niners head into a day off. But they couldn't have asked for better weather, with an overcast sky and temperatures hovering in the upper 60s and low 70s.

- The players who did not practice or I did not see today: WR Brandon Aiyuk (hold in), RB Isaac Guerendo (hamstring), OL Jon Feliciano, WR Jacob Cowing (hamstring), WR Tay Martin, DT Javon Hargrave (scheduled day off). With Hargrave out, the Niners used Kevin Givens and Jordan Elliott in rotation with the top DL.

- OL Spencer Burford (broken hand) and LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles did some work in individual drills but did not participate in team. Burford might need surgery but is expected to miss two to three weeks.

- DL Sam Okuayinonu limped off the practice field near the end of team drills.

- Without Burford and Feliciano, it was rookie Dominick Puni getting more run with the starting offense at right guard. 49ers view the interior OL as having competition and if Puni can stay healthy, that alone should help him get the needed reps to potentially earn a role sooner than later.

- Jake Brendel was back at the top center spot after a scheduled day off. Ben Bartch worked with the 2s at the pivot.

- It was another slow start for the top offense as they struggled to block for QB Brock Purdy. Again, it must be emphasized that they aren't in pads yet so an inherent disadvantage for that group, though there are, of course, still question marks in general on the OL.

- The pass protection did settle in after an early would-be sack for DE Leonard Floyd, a Fred Warner pressure that led to a throwaway, another sack for Floyd with pressure from Nick Bosa and then another sack for Bosa.

- Once there was time to throw, Purdy started to find a groove. After narrowly missing a back shoulder throw to RB Christian McCaffrey down the sideline and a nice pass breakup by CB Deommodore Lenoir against TE Cam Latu, Purdy found WR Malik Turner with a layered throw over Warner down the middle, hit Deebo Samuel on a comeback and another layered throw to WR Chris Conley down the middle as he connected on his final 10 pass attempts.

- Easily the best practice of camp for QB Josh Dobbs today. Dobbs was mixing in with the 2s and 3s and I had him down for only one incompletion in his 11 attempts. Dobbs is still new to this offense but just looked like he's settled in a bit, taking what the defense gives him and throwing in rhythm. Solid day for him after a bit of a slow start to this camp.

- WR Deebo Samuel continues to look like a guy with something to prove heading into a pivotal season for him. Samuel has been present and participated in everything so far and is heavily involved in the offense every day, regardless of who his quarterback is (remember, the Niners rotate their receivers in practice without regard for "starters" and "backups.") Given the shape he's in and how motivated he seems, a big year for him if healthy seems very possible.

- Rookie RB Cody Schrader has a bit of an advantage in terms of adapting to the scheme because he ran plenty of wide zone at Mizzou and it shows on the practice field. He seems to always hit the right hole at the right time and has been an adept pass catcher so far. A long way to go to win a roster spot but with Guerendo out, there should be opportunities to make a case.

- Second-year DE Robert Beal Jr. appears to have added some much-needed bulk and it's shown up a bit in the opening days, as he's looked more solid setting edges and offering some backup pass rush help. The Niners know their starters at DE but it would certainly be welcome for one of their young edge rushers to take a step to becoming a 5-6 sack type of guy this year.

- The Niners again worked some kick return stuff during special teams today. But Deebo was not involved this time around. Many of the same players -- Danny Gray, Ronnie Bell, Elijah Mitchell, Schrader, Trent Taylor -- were handling some of those returns on Saturday. Add CB Ambry Thomas to that mix, too.

- Kyle Shanahan said the Niners will put the pads on for the first time in camp on Monday following tomorrow's day off. Shanahan added that he likes the one on ones because there's nowhere to hide and it's a good evaluation tool.

- Shanahan said WR Ricky Pearsall "has a chance" to be back at practice on Monday. Pearsall again was sprinting on the sideline during Saturday's practice. Also, as mentioned before, S Talanoa Hufanga (knee) is aiming to return to practice for joint workouts with the Saints in Irvine. Those are scheduled for Aug. 15-16.

Injury Updates, Per Kyle Shanahan

DE Drake Jackson (Knee) - Will not be Participating in Training Camp

WR Jacob Cowing (Hamstring) Will likely return in 10 Days

RB Isaac Guerendo (Hamstring) Will Be Out for several weeks

OL Spencer Burford (Hand) Surgery has not been set.

Brandon Aiyuk just walked to midfield and dapped up John Lynch & Kyle Shanahan during practice. 👀

Video

First practice session; Not too eventful for the offense. Ton of sacks across all 3 teams.

Ricky Pearsall with a few catches early. Getting open a solid amount. Pearsall with the one handed catch at practice:

Al Sacco:

Rumors flying around…could mean nothing for the 49ers…but the Aiyuk situation will worry me until the end because I do feel like this is more like Buckner than the other recent contract negotiations we’ve seen. Not sure SF’s gonna budge here.

The Aiyik situation is heating up.

Schefter:
"If Brandon Aiyuk doesn't wanna go to a team he can say I'm not taking that contract. He has the ability to say no to these teams if he doesn't wanna go there"

Coach Yac:
I’m guessing Brandon Aiyuk is shooting down trade offers as we speak…

Akash:
Pretty wild that the 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk have publicly gotten to this point where a trade is actually on the table.

Crazy to think that a team right in the middle of their Super Bowl window would consider moving one of their 4 best offensive players from last season.

It sure feels like it’s up to Brandon Aiyuk now — Is he willing to accept a trade and extension from a less desirable destination OR is he willing to accept less than what he thinks he’s worth to stay in San Francisco.

I understand the the 49rrs want to give aiyuk 26m but he wants 28m-30m. Correct me if im wrong on that. The difference there is no more than 2% of the salary cap. So tedious.

Sounds like SF wants to put their foot down, even if it pisses off one of their best players.

We've being seeing that quite a bit in recent seasons. KC trading Hill, GB trading Adams, Titans trading AJ Brown, Dallas trading Cooper, Vikings trading Diggs, Rams (and NE, and NO) trading Cooks, and even the Ravens trading Hollywood (though getting a #1 for him was great value, even before it turned into Linderbaum)

I don’t believe they are.

The dude from PIT talking up the latest greatest trade rumor is hardly an unbiased source - he desperately wants the Steelers to get him, so i’d take today’s reporting with a huge grain of salt.

Eagles fan here. This is precisely where my mind was after the Birds lost to KC the year prior. It gets better mang. Until your team self immolates for the second half of the season. Then it’s back to laying in traffic mode. Good luck!

I would be shocked if both parties are drawing this kind of line in the sand over a $2m/year difference. It has to be more than that.

He's good as gone IMO. Let's get it over with and move on.
Nothing would surprise me at this point. Unless Aiyuk is being totally unreasonable, they have to bite the bullet and sign him. They basically have a 1 year window and it's insane that they are risking it like this.

Who is this pretty ricky feller? Hes saying its a done deal aiyuk to pittsburgh and he put his entire reputation on the line, whatever thats worth.

Breida was the first UDFA success at RB when Shanahan took over in 2017. Now he's back, as Issac Guerendo's hammy injury makes room for another RB at the moment.

Here we go....

BREAKING: The 49ers have the framework of a Brandon Aiyuk trade with both the Browns and the Patriots, a source told @MaioccoNBCS.

Now it's up to Aiyuk to decide if he will accept either team's contract terms

I'm hearing Amari Cooper would be in the CLE deal. Not a big downgrade IMO, and would only cost us $1.21 million this season, as well as getting $14mil off the books with no dead money.

Amari is on his last year of his contract and has also been holding out. He's been really good for the Browns and would cost less than Aiyuk.
I really like Amari, he's been a class act. He has earned an extension, but the Browns analytic FO doesn't hand out extensions to 30-year-olds. He would definitely cost less than Aiyuk who wants Tyreek Hill money.
Everyone knows SF has Brock Purdy waiting in the wings for a huge contract and can't afford that sort of money for Aiyuk.
The teams that have spent a ton on WRs haven't had success. It has always been about the QB.

Maiocco said that SF would need to be taking on additional salary, in the form of another player or through contract renegotiations with the players being traded, in this scenario otherwise the $ doesn't work for the Browns.

No Elijah Mitchell at practice for the 2nd straight day. No word on an injury yet.

Been hearing really good things about Dee Winters in camp. Tweets from today's practice:

Dee Winters getting 1st team reps again today at SAM LB

Dee Winters gets the start in base as the 3rd LB. TFL on first play. Beats 85 to the spot. Jumps into the throwing lane on 2nd down to force an errant pass.

Dee Winters has been very impressive, he’s all over the field

Dee Winters is FLYING around

Dee Winters is making the claim right now to be LB2 beside Fred Warner (while Greenlaw is out).

Shanahan on CMC:

He did it a couple of days ago. It’s all right. He didn’t pull it or anything. But you guys probably won’t see him in the preseason.”

Shanahan also noted that rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall re-aggravated a previous shoulder injury and was pulled from practice halfway through Tuesday's session as a precaution.

I just realized that I'll be on a plane during the week 1 MNF game vs the Jets. Flying to Pittsburgh of all places.

Report: 49ers and Steelers have verbal agreement for an Aiyuk trade

Filliponi is dog poo. He is the worst thing going in pittsburgh sports.

But, I would expect something along the lines of James Daniels(OG) and a 2nd rd pick, maybe a 5th rd too for Aiyuk.
Khan isnt going to give in to any demands, while also paying out at least $28M, no team should.

Steelers are $80M under the cap next year and have 10 picks in the draft.

I only posted it because 49er beat writers have picked it up. No idea how credible he is.

Like you, I have no idea who this guy is, but people in the Steeler's subreddit don't think very highly of him (Filliponi)... they banned this guy's reports from their subreddit, lol

Yep. Jordan Schultz shot it down

Sources: There is still no deal between the #49ers and #Steelers on a trade that would send WR Brandon Aiyuk to Pittsburgh, per multiple sources. The two sides have spoken, they continue to speak, and the situation remains very fluid.

But as of this post, there is no agreement on all sides.

I trust everyone on this site, every member/poster, more trustworthy than that jabroni.
He's a local radio guy here in Pittsburgh. No one likes him. He tries to be Skip Bayless, but cant pull it off. He came on air today at 2pm, and is making no case for the deal being done other than a couple people on twitter agree with him. He's getting off on NFL network talking about a 49ers/Steelers trade.
He said last year Pickett to Pickens is the new Montana to Rice......so, thats what we are dealing with right now.

And if he happens to be right, we'll never hear the end of it in Pittsburgh.

Clickbait. It used to be called there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

On WR Terique Owens, whom the #49ers waived today, he was waived with an injury designation. Source says he has a small fracture in his right hand that will sideline him about 5-7 weeks.

In related news, WR Robbie Chosen (formerly Robbie Anderson) is working out for the team today.

Strange a championship contender would rather trade for just picks instead of 1 of the better WR's in the league to add to their chances this year.
