*** San Francisco 49ers *** discussion thread (5 Viewers)

Good win. Team isn’t healthy enough at this point to nitpick a win. Bye coming at a perfect time to get everyone healthy and make a run in the 2nd half.

Kittle is so dominant as a receiver when he is the focal part of the offense. Pearsall looked good tonight, which is huge obviously with no Aiyuk. Deebo, Jennings, Pearsall and Kittle. If CMC is back after the bye, offense should roll, even without Aiyuk.

49ers postgame injury report:

RB Jordan Mason (shoulder)
LB Dee Winter (concussion)
WR Deebo Samuel (ribs)
CB Renardo Green (ankle)

None of them returned to the game after their injuries, but coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that Mason could have come back into the game, if needed.

I'm not sure if I'd be willing to spend another premium draft pick helping this iteration of the team out in the short term, but they need another impact defensive lineman if they are going to be a threat to anyone.

Really liking this young secondary. If they are smart, they will get Lenoir locked up sooner than later.

Add Mustafa into this mix as well. The play in the end zone was top notch. Defended the pass twice to knock it away. Plus, dude hits people

The best thing about Mustapha having a great game against Dallas is the fact that the 49ers took him with pick #124, which was the pick the Cowboys sent to the 49ers for Trey Lance.

Brock Purdy’s average depth of target last night:

First Half: 10.1 yards
Second Half: 3.8 yards

They got back to the short passing game and let their playmakers do their thing in the 2nd half, and the offense exploded for 3 TDs. They need to keep doing it.

49ers YAC per reception this season:

Week 1 — 3.4
Week 2 — 3.0
Week 3 — 3.1
Week 4 — 6.1
Week 5 — 5.3
Week 6 — 7.1
Week 7 — 4.3
Week 8 — 7.8

Brock Purdy's avg air yards per game:

Week 1 — 9.7
Week 2 — 8.5
Week 3 — 10.9
Week 4 — 14.2
Week 5 — 8.9
Week 6 — 7.1
Week 7 — 9.3
Week 8 — 7.5

Its not coincidence that the 2 games with Purdys lowest air yards were the 2 games with the highest YAC per reception this season, and those 2 games were their best offensive performances this season.

The short passing game needs to be a staple in this offense. Let's hope it sticks around.

Akash:

PFF’s #1 graded rookie in Week 8: CB Renardo Green.

Quietly has taken over the outside corner role in nickel situations and has been good in coverage the last few weeks.

I don't put a ton of weight into DVOA, but found it interesting that we are top 7 in both offense and defense.

Offensive & Defensive DVOA
(Defense-adjusted Value Over Average)

SF ranks 6th overall:

OFF #7
DEF #6
ST #29

Link: DVOA chart

Teams ahead of SF in DVOA:

Offense: Bal, Buf, Det, GB, Was, Atl

Defense: Min, Hou, KC, Det, Den

Bye week stuff courtesy of Coach Yac

A look at the 49ers offensive line at the halfway point of the season:

• Colton McKivitz: 21 pressures, 1 sack
• Aaron Banks: 18 pressures, 1 sack
• Dominick Puni: 14 pressures, 0 sacks
• Trent Williams: 12 pressures, 1 sack
• Jake Brendel: 12 pressures, 0 sacks

Brock Purdy has been sacked a total of 15 times in the 8 games, but 12 of those were credited to either the RB, TE or himself.

The 49ers highest-graded defensive players for the first half of the season, per PFF:

1. Fred Warner: 91.6
2. Nick Bosa: 90.7
3. Evan Anderson: 89.9
4. Renardo Green: 79.6
5. George Odum: 70.6
6. Sam Okuayinonu: 69.1

The 49ers highest-graded offensive players for the first half of the season, per PFF:

1. George Kittle: 88.5
2. Trent Williams: 84.4
3. Brock Purdy: 83.2
4. Jauan Jennings: 82.6
5. Deebo Samuel: 79.4
6. Dominick Puni: 76.1

Deommodore Lenoir this season:

• 291 coverage snaps
• 52 targets
• 6 pass breakups
• 5 forced incompletions
• 2 interceptions
• 0 touchdowns allowed

Renardo Green has the 2nd highest CB coverage grade (79.1) from his draft class, and 9th among all cornerbacks in the NFL this season

Dominick Puni’s stats through 8 games (PFF):

• 289 pass-blocking opportunities
• 0 sacks allowed
• 0 quarterback hits
• 14 pressures
• 97.6 pass-blocking efficiency
• 70.0 pass-block grade
• 73.3 run-block grade

Puni is one of only two guards (Joe Thuney) who has played in at least seven games this season and has not allowed a QB sack or hit.

He also didn’t allow a single sack in 2 years of D1 football at Kansas. One has to travel back two levels of football to find when Puni last gave up a sack.

LT Trent Williams says not only was it great to see RB Christian McCaffrey out on the field today but noted LB Dre Greenlaw did some running on the side with a helmet on.

49ers add depth on the D line.

The Texans are trading DT Khalil Davis to the 49ers in exchange for a 2026 7th-round pick.

SF needed rotational depth, particularly to beef up versus the run, and Khalil Davis has been with DeMeco Ryans past two seasons — so he should fit right into the 49ers' scheme.

New 49ers DT Khalil Davis this season (172 snaps):

• 1 sack
• 8 pressures
• 4 tackles for loss
• 4 stops

The 49ers have a track record of adding D-linemen via trade deadline, usually at bargain rates:

2020: Jordan Willis (7th round pick swap)
2021: Charles Omenihu (6th rounder)
2023: Randy Gregory (6-7 pick swap), Chase Young (3rd rounder)
2024: Khalil Davis (7th rounder)

That's another meh move

Pointless
It's not a splash move, but adding depth is never a bad thing.

I'm surprised they even made this move, I thought they'd stand pat this cycle.

It's a bad move because it's a nothing move. It's little draft capital but why get older when you are already over the peak...they just added a guy who is almost 29 for 6 months. I'd rather see what a kid can do

If he's more Omenihu/J Willis than Chase Young/Gregory, the trade is worth it IMO - decent productivity for minimal cost.

For a guy that's about to be over the hill

At some point 49ers need to get young. They already have an old roster and they wasted all those picks on lance

We signed S Tashon Gipson to the pracrice squad.

Gipson will take K Anders Carlson's spot on the practice squad. SF obviously likes having veteran safeties around. Their current safeties, Ji'Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha, are 24 and 22 respectively.

Which kid? Evan Anderson will still get snaps. I don’t think they have any other young players of note or that have shown promise.

How often do NFL Offenses convert on 3rd Down?

SF leads the league with the shortest average distance to go on 3rd down (6.2 yards) and ranks third in conversion rate (46%).

Only KC and TB convert more 3rd downs.

Nick Wagoner:

During early open portion of Thursday practice:

Did NOT see: WR Chris Conley (hamstring), CB Mooney Ward (personal), DT Kevin Givens (groin)

Practicing with blue no contact jersey: WR Deebo Samuel, RB Jordan Mason

Players on injury report who are practicing: RB Christian McCaffrey, WR Jauan Jennings, K Jake Moody, P Mitch Wishnowsky, OL Jon Feliciano, DL Yetur Gross-Matos

Barrows:

RB Jordan Mason, who wasn't in a blue, no-contact jersey yesterday, was wearing one today. Thursday's practice is a lot more rigorous than Wednesday's. He was listed on Wednesday's practice participation report with a shoulder issue but was a full participant Wednesday.

Bosa will be listed as limited today because he went through warm-ups and some of the individual drills. Will be something to monitor tomorrow

On DE Nick Bosa, Kyle Shanahan said Bosa got a hip pointer in practice Wednesday.

Shanahan said he was concerned about Bosa's status for Sunday "to a degree."

“He wasn't able to do a lot. He definitely was extremely limited. Hoping he'll be alright, but we'll see on Sunday.”

49ers injury report for Sunday:

OUT: CB Mooney Ward (personal), DT Kevin Givens (groin), WR Chris Conley (hamstring)

QUESTIONABLE: DE Nick Bosa (hip), RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles), WR Deebo Samuel (rib, oblique), S Malik Mustapha (calf)

OL Jon Feliciano is also questionable and DL Yetur Gross-Matos is out. Most likely, both will remain on IR and in their practice windows for at least another week.

Between Jennings and Pearsall, who plays at slot and which will be outside more? I think whichever is outside more will feast vs TB.

Ugly game, but they needed to win an ugly game like this. They usually find a way to lose those.

CMC looks like he will be fine, which is huge going forward.

Unless we find a pass rush, we're gonna be in a lot of shootouts IMO. Seahawks, Bills, Packers, Bills, Rams, Dolphins, Lions, and Cardinals on the schedule.

Special teams are so bad I don't even know what to say.

Another muffed punt. Luter got manhandled and pushed straight back for about 10 yards into Cowing. Same guy who had the ball bounce off his ankle in the super bowl. Maybe take him off the punt team. This can't keep happening.

But yeah, can't be too picky about a win on the road. Nice to have CMC back. Makes the 3rd and short plays much easier. Moody was brutal. Made me miss Anders Carlson.

Why didn't Bosa just rip Bakers arm off instead of almost holding him up? Maybe afraid of getting a roughing the passer, but that was game over if he completes the play.

Bosa said after the game he was worried about a horse collar on that play.

He also said his rib injury definitely affected him today. it was noticeable, had zero pressures before the sack.

Interesting. He had him by the arm. Don't see how a horse collar would be a concern. But OK
Yeah I think he just couldn't stop Baker from dragging him.

Felt like they used Kittle as a pass blocker/decoy too much. I know that's often been the case, but its almost always the wrong thing to do. He's their best weapon after CMC and should never have less than 8 targets.

I was a little surprised how much CMC was used, at least from a percentage standpoint, only 2 touches between Mason/Guerendo was not what I'd have guessed. CMC played a higher snap percentage today than he averaged in 2023.

I'll chalk up Moody to being first game back from a leg injury.

I agree with the postgame observations everyone has made. I'd only add that the run game sucked and this team can't afford that. Especially in the red zone, they have to be able to pound the ball in. They can't keep running 2-3 plays in shotgun from the 9 yard line, that's asking too much of any QB.
