San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (2 Viewers)

5-1, you do the same.

Yeah, I love it when fans from other teams go into rival team threads to beat their chest, like they had something to do with the game.

One thing Seahawk fans have never been accused of being is classy, so I guess it's par for the course.

For the love of all that is holy, the pass interference penalties this season make me want to kick puppies and punch babies. I think we have the most in the league, and I don't even wanna know how many yards they amount to, or how many points we've given up on drives that were kept alive by those penalties.

Several of them would not have been completed passes to begin with, so its not like the penalties are saving touchdowns. How none of our defenders are turning their head around to look for the ball is so frustrating, they're just begging to be flagged. It's the #1 rule! If you don't turn your head around, and you make contact with the receiver, you're getting called for DPI every time. Every time! 😠

How I haven't thrown my remote through my TV several times this season after DPI calls is beyond me, cuz I've wanted to and almost have on more than one occasion..

/rantover

I also came to a conclusion yesterday that the play calling is outright awful.

This is my big macro concern for the franchise in the medium-long term.  This team's competitive advantage is having a top tier offensive mind at the helm.  If Shanahan has lost a step, or is bungling the personnel side so badly he's sabotaging himself on the field, that is major problem.

:lmao:  i’m a raider fan but this is funny as ####. every team has their non classy fans including you guys, let’s face it the niners have won 1 super bowl in the post salary cap era and that came the first year the cap was put in. Niner fans are like everyone else and like everyone else they act like they are better than others when crow is thrown in their face. eddie murphy said it best “what have you done for me lately”

So you agree with me. Let’s start Lance and see what he can do! Right?

honestly as banged up as this team is i would want to wait on him so he has time to grow. the d is banged up and they will be playing from behind (giggity it) so d’s will be coming for him and he will be running for his life. maybe if the top 3 rb’s were healthy and opposing defenses respected the run but this feels like a sam darnold jets situation.

For the "sit Trey Lance" proponents, please try to keep a few things in mind.... The 2011 and 2020 CBAs installed many rules that limit the amount of practice time available during the offseason as well as during the season. The installment of the rookie salary cap also meant if you've got a budding star at QB, those years when they're still on their rookie salaries are your best windows of opportunity for a title shot since you don't need to divert 10+% of your salary cap to one player.

Is Trey Lance ready? No absolutely not, it was clear as day. But the niners need to start expediting that process... and that means getting him on the field more. This kid's played only 1.5 meaningful games since he was 19 years old and he looks it. Honestly the oft-used Mahomes analogy is kind of an aberration (not any less so than a Herbert or Luck)... can you guys think of any QBs that sat their first year and then just hit the ground running their 2nd? Mahomes is good because he's Patrick Mahomes, not because he sat behind Alex Smith.

I've heard a couple of QB interviews in the last few months (including, IIRC, from Alex Smith) saying it is really beneficial to be able to sit for a little while, especially if the team you are stepping into is a trainwreck.  I don't pretend to know enough about it to have a personal opinion.  I'd love to see Lance at this point, but I don't want him traumatized either.  Playing maybe the league's best team on the road, with no running game and a bad OL, doesn't seem like an ideal situation this week.

I think that was probably more true back in 2005... and Alex Smith was ruined by a multitude of reasons (a new system every year, very little supporting talent to speak of, etc...) Lance at the moment won't fall victim to either.

I mean you could see it during the course of the seahawks game... he went from looking like Tim Tebow to looking more like Lamar Jackson in the span of 2 quarters. The kid just needs reps and live fire NFL experience.

This is 100% where I am it too. The kid has confidence, he hasn't lost a game since like 2018. He needs to see the pro game in real time. They should sit him down for a conversation, let him know they're going to give him plenty of rope, and he shouldn't be worried about mistakes as they're going to happen.

If he is a stud, the window is his rookie deal, let's use that window and see what he can do.

Shanahan says Jimmy is still QB1 so I imagine this week will go a long way to whether he sticks with that plan or he does the same thing the Bears did with Fields and stick with  the rook.

Of course he says that, Trey is QB2 who's starting because Jimmy is out. I fully expect Jimmy to start when healthy unless Trey absolutely lights it up. They need Jimmy to have some trade value after this season, so if he's healthy, he's gonna start.

Also...Kittle doubtful for this game, but Elijah Mitchell isn't listed on the report, so he should be good to go.

Final Injury report:

Out
QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf), CB K'Waun Williams (calf)

Doubtful
TE George Kittle (calf)

Questionable
DL Samson Ebukam (hamstring), DT Javon Kinlaw (knee)

Friday practice report:

Did Not Participate In Practice
QB Jimmy Garoppolo (calf), TE George Kittle (calf), CB K'Waun Williams (calf)

Limited Participation in Practice
DL Samson Ebukam (hamstring), DT Javon Kinlaw (knee)

Full Participation in Practice
DL Arik Armstead (not injury related - resting player), DL D.J. Jones (knee), C Alex Mack (not injury related - resting player), RB Elijah Mitchell (shoulder), CB Josh Norman (chest), T Trent Williams (shoulder)

If the niners somehow win, it will be by dominating on the ground (which they've struggled to do this year). So it sets up a potentially interesting scenario... what if Lance is simply mediocre, but they run the ball a lot better, play good D and take down the last remaining unbeaten? Does Lance keep the job after the bye?

It's a tough call because JG has looked pretty awful too but Lance really is rough around the edges as a passer.  49ers appear to be in a no win situation this year.  Plan for the long term

The game was a lot closer than anyone expected.

Lance looked like a rookie, and that's OK. The only way he will get better is with game experience, and we all know Jinmy will get hurt again and Lance will prob end the season as the starter.

Next season I really hope they spend wisely once they unload Jimmy's salary. O-line and CB are the 2 biggest needs IMO.

McGlinchey needs to go, he's terrible. Josh Norman is Sherman last year - either getting beat, or getting called for DPI.

We aren't winning anything this season, I'll be surprised if we make the playoffs with this roster and injuries. At least we will get a decent draft pick, I hope they don't screw it up.

Haven't we punted our next two first rounders for Mike's new fullback.

Shanny has to go, he's terrible. The play calling was awful and the penalties disastrous.

That 4 & 1 with the Kyle sneak? First off, it was almost 4 & 2, very long one. 2nd off, they were already preparing for an up the middle Trey run. Then we bring Kyle there, he didn't fool my 8 year old. The Incredible Hulk couldn't have gotten those 5 feet, everyone knew it was coming. 1 for 5 on 4th down? Here's a thought, roll Trey out and give him the option to throw or run. Maybe we shouldn't let the kid get killed play in and play out, just a thought.

I liked what I saw out of Trey, hate how he is being coached, fire Shanny. The wasted timeouts would've been good at the end of the game too.

Defense played great, again, even with our awful secondary.

ETA:

He'll need to learn A) you need to be more accurate in the NFL, can't get away with the same throws as NDSU B) need a little more air around the line with ball or it will get batted down C) take less punishment

I keep forgetting we don't have 1st round picks for a couple years. Maybe we trade some players for some picks we can deal to trade up.

I disagree about Shanahan though. Yeah, some of his play calling is suspect, but not having Kittle throws a huge wrench into short yardage play calls, he's that much of a factor.  If Kittle played today I think we convert a few more of those 4th downs. I do agree Kyle should be calling rollouts and boots for Trey. Give him a hot read and let him make the decision. The RPO up the middle is terrible, he's not Lamar Jackson.

All that said, I'm not freaking out about this season, when we lost Mostert and Verrett I knew it was gonna be another frustrating year.

No fire Shanahan yet?

Meanwhile...

Jed be gettin' Uncle Eddie with a Louisiana politician like up in Santa Clara:

https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/49ers/article/Fired-Santa-Clara-city-attorney-on-49ers-Jed-16432381.php

You read all the Santa Clara vs. Jed drama, and it spells out Santa Clara is taking a bath on Levi's.

What does that mean for Shanahan?

If no butts in seats - which I have shown everyone here for ages - with Levi's bleeding cash, and this:

https://www.si.com/nfl/49ers/news/where-the-buck-stops-with-san-francisco-49ers-injuries

(I know it's Grant "My daddy got me this job" Cohn, but still he reiterates a few things I have tried to explain to youse for ages)

Things aren't well in Santa Clara. Never have been, never will be.

Edit: couple other things for youse to chew on:

https://musketfire.com/2021/10/03/patriots-tom-brady-turned-down-49ers/

"

"Could Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch help the franchise make up for passing on him in favor of Giovanni Carmazzi all those years ago?

Sadly, no. The 49ers reportedly did their due diligence on Brady, but they decided that Jimmy Garoppolo, who had taken the team to the Super Bowl in the prior season, was a better option at quarterback. Based on how things have gone since then, it’s clear they made the wrong choice."

HAVE A HAPPY JED SEASON!!

I like Lance.

Given the tiny sample size, there is nothing but upside, right?

To me he is Kaepernick 2.0, maybe even a lesser version, but without Harbaugh and Greg Roman. Roman is currently OC of the Ravens with of course John Harbaugh with Lamar Jackson. The comparisons of what Jim Harbaugh did coming off Alex Smith - who was a better quarterback to Jimmy "The Jimmy Legs" Garoppololz is ever going to be - with Kaepernick will bear it's head this season.  In Jed Land, coaches get fired because they make Jed look bad. Mama York can't have that, it hurts the bottom line. They desperately need a face of the franchise, yet they hated Harbaugh because he tossed Paraag out of his office, who is Jed's Chief of Staff, and he lost the Super Bowl and blamed it on because he started Kaepernick instead of Smith.

Both Kaepernick and Lance are similar as in long term project quarterbacks. Andy Dalton was on Scot McGlouhan's draft chart that Trent Baalke worked with because McBoozin' was on a bender and had to quit before that draft, but Cincinnati chose Dalton first. Yet McBoozin had been building the 49ers since he was hired during Mike Nolan's first year forward. He was building a run first team, like the early 90's Cowboys. Mike Singletary forged that even further, but just wasn't able to deal with players in the modern NFL. Along with having schizophrenic offense,  but his philosophy of a hard run game and a harder defense with the quarterback not the focus had the whole Bay Area media who was still smoking the Bill Walsh pipe - because the 49ers haven't found a quarterback since Jeff Garcia that Bill Walsh found, let alone we all know who - was like sacrilege.

Yet Harbaugh, and even Shanahan, both took teams to the Super Bowl doing what Singletary tried to do.

Why? Because they didn't have Bill Walsh finding a quarterback for them.

A friend of mine asked me "Why are the 49ers losing Super Bowls now?"

I told him "Well, they won when they played in San Francisco".

HAPPY JED SEASON

I like he is from a small school with snarl. Maybe I’m wrong. It is ok. Not the first or last time I’ve been wrong. But I believe he will run at top as I do Wilson of Jets. Why, I know how an arm works. They both have something that most of us don’t.

But Lance could also be Geno Smith. Or even a lesser Teddy Bridgewater. What we do know now, is that he isn't even Colin Kaepernick.

I have no bros there. But I would like to eat them if this is ok with everyone

It's not if you have any Bro's there, it's that they accept you as a Bro. The tastier biscuit is smothered in Red and Gold honey. Just ask David Bonilla for the recipe. David ***illo did when he had Niners Nation. Which I wrote for.

I idolized Joe Montana, Rice, Taylor, Craig as a young man. I’m not stupid. Check.

Hind sight.

Well NFL GM's can't excuse anything on hindsight.

Carmen Policy, who was one of the worst GM's ever once he was left with a salary cap to manage pretty much sunk the Browns before they could even reboot post Modell leaving Cleveland.
