San Francisco 49ers - link to new 2023 thread in latest post (2 Viewers)

Colt McKivitz, who had the 3rd highest PFF grade for SF Monday night, has a sprained MCL and will be out at least 4 weeks. Jaylon Moore and Brunskill will have to hold it down til Trent Williams is back.
 
Jimmy G almost threw about five interceptions in that game.

That said, he did make a number of big plays when he needed them.

The biggest of which just happened to have been super lucky that it wasn’t a pick six, and was instead an insane Deebo touchdown.

If Jimmy can stop making those OH NO Throws, they’re going to win a lot of games
 
Per NFL communications: Nick Bosa has more tackles for loss (27) than any other player in the league since the start of 2021.

Bosa out woth a groin injury...his brother is out a few weeks with a groin injury. Weird coincidence. Hopefully he won't miss much time, we need him against KC in 2 weeks.

If Moseley misses time, I hope Verrett can get up to speed quick and look like his usual self.

We might be down a kicker, too....time to cut bait with Gould IMO.
 
49ers had six sacks Sunday, giving them a league-high 21 on the season. Their 21 sacks are their most through the first 5 games of a season since 1998 (22).

Week 1: Elijah Mitchell (8 weeks)

Week 2: QB Trey Lance (Season Ending)

Week 3: LT Trent Williams (4-6 wks) LB Aziz Al-Shiaar (8 weeks)

Wrek 4: DL Javon Kinlaw (2 weeks so far), DL Arik Armstead (2 weeks so far)

Week 5: DE: Nick Bosa, S Jimmie Ward, CB Emmanuel Moseley, K Robbie Gould

Jimmy looked serviceable today, but he needs to be serviceable against a quality team in the 4th quarter. Something I really hope he can show he can do this season.
 
Jimmy, Wilson, Coleman, and the secondary were fantastic today. I had a lot of concerns about the OL and special teams. The pass rush without Bosa goes from special to merely solid. Losing Mosley hurts a lot - they may need Verrett to actually be healthy and good this year, which was something I was hoping they wouldn’t have to bank on.

Moseley is a big loss and Ward playing in a cast is bad news too. Feels like we’re one injury away from 2021. Secondary has been solid, but I’m getting worried.

Bosa being day-day is good news, but agree with above that the rush goes from special to above average without him. I’d prefer we just sit him against ATL and let him heal fully.

It was indicated that he was day to day. Hopefully it’s right. He’s prob sitting against ATL, let’s hope it’s just a pull or strain.
 
Ward broke his hand, too.

I hope Verrett is close to a return - it’s getting ugly back there. They said last week they wouldn’t rush him though he has been practicing. They said they had the luxury of the secondary playing well.

Not really a luxury any more.

Yes also a lot of these players are wearing the wrong cleats, best used on grass but they are marketed and worn on turf. At least a few of these injuries are related to players wearing cleats on surfaces they were not intended for.

Kinlaw and Armstead officially out

I really liked the Kinlaw pick at the time (but I thought Wirfs was the pick at the time because they hadn't signed Trent yet), but did someone miss the medicals on him? Painful to basically waste the #13 overall pick.

I understood the thought process behind trading Buckner for the ability to re-sign Armstead and draft Kinlaw, but it seemed too clever by half at the time and hasn't aged well.

(Also, the team's medical staff appears to be hot garbage and needs to be overhauled.)

He was Kris Kocureks draft crush for some reason, and for some other reason, Lynch and Kyle bought in.

I love Kocurek but that was a huge whiff.

2-Jeff Wilson but the de facto RB1 right now with Mitchell Injured
3-Tevin Coleman, essentially he has been signed and is now the clear back up to Wilson IMHO or what i am watching
4-Kyle Juszczyk...yes/no? He actually is involved during the game
5-Jordan Mason
6-TD Price

Things have been running smooth with Wilson as their starting which is why i feel they will be patient with Mitchell and possibly push it back a couple weeks and make him 100% for their Playoff run. Wilson's availability and health will dictate much of this. Where I thought Mitchell would be bouncing back Week 8/Week 9, maybe that is closer to Weeks 11 or 12. I don't see the need for the Niners to rush him back only because they love him a lot and he will give them a huge boost down the stretch when they are competing for Playoff positioning.

I never had an issue with the Buckner deal. Although he is better than Armstead, it's not like he was Aaron Donald. Plus getting the #13 overall pick was big. Of course, when you waste the pick because the player you choose has a chronic knee issue, it ends up badly.

Gray looked great in preseason. I wonder if he’s disappointing in practice or they are just realistic about the fact that the current QB can’t get him the ball.

I'm not sure I'm all the way there yet, but the advantage of having him is that your offense should be good enough to win a shootout once in a while. He shouldn't need the defense to have to play like the 2000 Ravens to field a competitive team.

They have won zero (0) times in those instances.

Largest "after 3 quarter" deficit they've overcome? 4 points, from 12/21/2019 vs. the Rams


49ers are 0-26 under Kyle Shanahan when trailing by more than 4 points after 3 quarters. Only other teams w/out a win in that scenario since Shanahan arrived in SF in 2017:
Washington 0-38
Lions 0-38
Browns 0-34-1

 
49ers' Rushing EPA/Play ranks under Kyle Shanahan:

2019: 7th
2020: 11th
2021: 23rd
2022: 27th

Shanahan's run game has been trending the wrong way and it's having ripple effects on overall offensive output.

49ers' first half offense:
EPA/play: 10th
Success Rate: 14th

49ers' second half offense:
EPA/play: 21st
Success Rate: 26th

Efficiency gets significantly worse in the second halves of games

49ers' offensive points by quarter (ranks):

1st: 9th
2nd: 15th
3rd: 28th

They start out hot in the first quarter (scripted plays), then regress in every quarter after. They've been horrible coming out of halftime (for whatever reason).

That's an amazing stat

They can't throw the ball down the field (well consistently anyway) with Jimmy, so hard to play catch up. They had the ball over 8 minutes on the last drive when they were down 14. They were running the play clock down to 2-3 seconds. WTF? There was no urgency down 14 with time running out.

Kittle should be a Mark Andrews type player but instead he's "the best blocking TE in the NFL".

I really like Shanny as a head coach but he's really stubburn in his offensive approach. As "The Catch" says, defense shouldn't have to ball out for the team to win games.

Frustrating to watch
 
With Hufanga in the concussion protocol, I just saw that of the 11 projected starters on defense, 2 are healthy. Terrible injury luck for a defense-led team. Need the offence to step up and win some games. Might be a bridge too far based on the stats posted above.

Love Hufanga, but to be fair the way he plays he's just asking for concussions.
 
I’ve been in the fire Shanny camp for a while. Def tough breaks on defense, but I absolutely despise his play-calling and terrible conservative brand of protecting small leads.
 
This last week made me want to vomit. While the drops were painful, so we’re the INTs.

Without a healthy defense, we’ve got no shot against KC.

Excellent points in here. I strongly believe that with Kittle, AIyuk and Deebo we have at least a top 3 trio in the NFL that is being so badly underused. These guys would be absolute stars on any other team.

The other part that frustrates me is our drafts tend to stink nowadays...

I’ve been critiquing this guys play calling for years now. Honestly, if I was a defensive coordinator, I think I could shut the offensive genius out. Baiting Jimmy G into at least 2 turnovers a game should also be in every NFC West DC’s contract or they’re fired.

Beyond the 3 Kface quoted above, I like Jennings a lot too. I think he’s shown he’s a very solid number 3 WR. He’s had the tools, he got the QB he wanted, an absolute beastly defense and he hasn’t delivered. In any other job by this point, he’d be fired for performance.

Imo, it’s really time to consider moving on. While there’s no question injuries have been bad, when you pull out over a 6 year span, most teams revert near the average, so any team could make that argument.

My only real hope this year is that the injuries are out of the way now, bc at 3-4, gonna need to improve quickly.
