Any good restaurants?

Any must see things?

I'll probably be staying in the fisherman wharf area but will be around. We have a couple excursions already lined up but wanted some feedback.

Is that blue bottle coffee place worth searching for?

There is a thread on here with lots of great info from SF peeps

The one thing we did that I absolutely loved was Muir Woods. Best part of my trip

I also did Alcatraz, took in a Giants game, went to the wharf, ate at in and out burger

We went to Sausalito which was a nice little town but nothing I need to do again. Ate at a burger place that Steve Carrell was at.

Blue Bottle is a coffee bar. They serve a good cup but I don't think it's worth a separate trip. If you're staying at the Wharf, the one at the Ferry Building is the closest.

The Alcatraz audio tour is amazing and is probably the one tourist attraction that's totally worth it. So is the Golden Gate Bridge.

Buena Vista Cafe is at the WHarf and is the home of Irish Coffee.

I'm not sure I'm actually recommending this, but Mrs. Karpis and I did a walking food tour with Local Tastes of the City Tours. It was led by a tour guide named Blandina...who has absolutely bat-### crazy (in an endearing way). The tour culminated with us sitting in a cafe and Blandina pulling from her oversized satchel a copy of a children's book she had written and illustrated about a beagle. It was an unpublished mock-up, and she proceeded to read it to me while we drank hot cocoa.

Good times.

ETA:

Holy crap...I just checked Amazon and the book actually finally found a publisher. "Benny the Beagle," by Blandina Farley. Just ordered a copy.

my gf and i were in SF last May. we both really wanted to do this but driving out on our own was a mistake. i would recommend finding a shuttle or tour that gets you out there instead. it's a cluster#### for parking otherwise during the year. they have very limited parking around it. parking along the side of the road is available but it is a loooooong hike.

Are you a foodie? Last time I was in San Fran I went to State Bird Provisions. Thought it was pretty damn good. Make rezzies way in advance, or they allow walk-ins, but can be quite awhile.

yes, however, we got there about 15 minutes before it opened based upon someones recommendation. We parked in the lot and had the place to ourselves for the better part of an hour or so

If you're going to Muir Woods by car, early on a weekday is the time to do it.

that would make sense. we didn't get there at the right time, i guess, because it was packed.

We booked an excursion that takes us there in the morning and then we visit 3 different wineries in the afternoon. As should be really cool. It's like an 11 hour day.

I enjoy good food but I'd rather spend 3 racks on my eating out there. I'll look up the place you mentioned. Thanks.

if you go to Muir woods by car, remind me and I'll give you the locals' route that by-passes hwy 1 and the tourists the drive on it.

Seek out bushman. He is an awesome homless man.
He's either died or retired. Either way I dont think he's there anymore.
The original guy died. I doubt he trademarked his schtick so somebody may still be doing it.
Yeah. Some dude near Fishermans Warf was doing 2 years ago when I was there.
He told me he's been hit in the face numerous times from people's reactions lol.

I don't doubt it.

I always enjoy a ride on the cable cars. The California St. line never has a long wait, even in summer, and it's near my office, so that's the one I usually take. It runs between the Financial District and California & Van Ness so it's not as close to the tourist spots as the Powell St. line. But the California St. line does pass right by the Tonga Room, so there's that.

is the Persian Zam Zam still around on Haight? don't order that martini with vodka or watch out!

It's still there but Bruno's not. He sold the business and died a few years later. It's still a nice little bar with a good jukebox but Bruno was a big part of what made it special. I never had any problems with him; he poured a great Manhattan with professional efficiency. Some people said he was kind of racist but he was always fine with Mrs. Eephus. I need to go back up there some rainy night.

As other's have said, there's a great thread somewhere on what to do and where to go. In SF itself the only touristy place I still will go every few years or so, and I live here, is Alcatraz. I get tired of doing the Pier 37, Ghirardelli, China Town, etc with visitors though if you haven't seen these touristy spots, then one time is good enough. I'm more of a night life person so I can't really give much feedback on the day time stuff.

bruno was the owner/bar-tender?

if so, loved him. he'd open the place when he wanted and closed it when he wanted... saturday night and not int he mood? #### it- closed. I was there once when that internal dialogue happened and he just shut the place down in the middle of a somewhat busy weekend night.

I remember being warned about vodka with him the first time I went in- I'm a gin guy anyways, made a point of saying that when asked "what kind" and then told him to make it how he liked. never had a problem with him, and I like to think he remembered me in my days of living near there (hugo and 3rd, beeatch!). the martini nazi.

oh- there was a place further out on Irving (7th or 8th?) that had nothing but clown paintings for decor- loved that place in spite of the nightmares it gave me.

If you are staying near the Wharf.

I'd suggest - www.towertours.com/ to go to Muir Woods.

We took a city tour with them and it was good

Just an update:

The Haight-Ashbury district is good. I also checked out what is left of the 49ers old stadium. Kezar Stadium is now a park.

Wine country
I went there and wore a Mets t-shirt with holes in it. I don't think the wine geeks liked that too much.
Should have said something like "This is a vintage Fru'de Loum 2004. It's an ambitious little shirt but not to presumptuous. It is lightweight with accents of cotton, Right Guard, airplane glue, and sandalwood. There is also just the slightest chuchotement of Bounce."

If it's one day alcatraz imo.

get the first or second tour

I like how you can actually go into a D block solitary cell and close the door to get the real feel of it. Beware though it is a climb to get up there if you have any disabilities affecting you with walking up hills. There is however disabled visitor's trams that can take you up and back.

If you get pooped midstream then the tram won't stop to pick you up. My poor aunt was denied a ride back down because she wasn't at the top starting point. I mean really, you can't stop the tram for 1 second for her to get on?? I told her next time just jump on. It goes slow enough....
