Schierholtz had options left and didn't help his cause by hitting like a Bocockian .229 this spring. There's still talk of bringing in Crede, Helms or Inge. I don't know which of these infields is more depressing:Ortmeier - Frandsen - Bocock - Rohringer/VelezAurilia - Durham - Vizquel - Crede/Helms/Inge
I don't have any problems with Schierholtz getting sent down. If I had m way he'd be starting in LF, but If I had my way a lot of things would be different. Regardless, getting him at bats every day is the most important thing for him whether it be in the majors or at AAA. This will also give Freddie and Rajai one less person to split PT against. I think the opening day infield will look somethingl likeOrtmeier/Aurilia - Durham - Bocock - Velez/Frandsen:shock:

For me, I'd find this one more depressing. Chances are it would perform marginally better offensively this year, but I am holding out hope that maybe somehow one of the kids will catch lightning in a bottle and become a barely below-average major leaguer. It would be really neat if the G-men could somehow develop a marginally better than replacement level position player.

For future reference, here are the lowest team OPS+ marks posted since 1900. The Giants' all-time record is 84 set by their 1902 NL cellar dwellers. OF Steve Brodie led that team in HRs with 3  .

OPS+ - Team - Year73 - Chicago White Sox - 191074 - Philadelphia Athletics - 192074 - Toronto Blue Jays - 198176 - Boston Doves - 190977 - Boston Braves - 192477 - Minnesota Twins - 198178 - NY Mets - 196578 - Boston Red Sox - 193079 - Cincinnati Reds - 195179 - Pittsburgh Pirates - 195279 - Boston Braves - 193079 - Boston Braves - 192279 - Seattle Mariners - 198379 - California Angels - 1992
Cut & pasted from BBTF

Team ranks near bottom in most stats during exhibition play

Manager Bruce Bochy has repeated that his team, bereft of stars, must excel at "the little things" to be competitive. These days, Bochy said, "we're not doing them. Like I said, that'll be the difference between us being a good ballclub and mediocre. Right now, we aren't even playing decent ball. At this point, we're making too many mistakes."

Those lapses are multidimensional.

The pitching staff, the backbone of any club, has compiled a 7.11 ERA, worst in the Majors.

Eugenio Velez, who's so promising offensively but hasn't mastered a defensive position, botched a grounder at third base for the Giants' 30th error. They led all of baseball in this dubious category entering Thursday's game.

San Francisco's .253 batting average is the lowest among the Cactus League's 12 teams.

"We need to turn it up here. There's no getting around it," Bochy said. "We're actually getting in good situations; we're not getting a hit or getting them in."
Isn't the pitching staff our strength? Isn't the rest of the team going to be built around speed and defense?I know it's only spring training, but after reading that article it sounds like the team is already pressing. They've spent all offseason trying to convience themselves they're not horrible, I feel so bad for them now that the're realizing the're no good.

:kicksrock:

The Giants claimed utility infielder Jose Castillo off waivers. Claiming Marlins & Pirates castoffs is a different way to build a champion, but I guess he fills a need.

Matt CainTim LincecumThat's good for at least 21. I think the rest of the team is hovering around 0, they might eventually hit negatively though. So, maybe. Serious answer... In a increasingly competetive division I say they win 68-71 games.

The Frandsen injury is a terrible break. Even if he was mediocre this year, it would have been helpful to see what he could do in a full time role. He'll be a big question mark going into next year at age 27.

It's a bump up for Velez, Durham, Castillo and Aurilia. I'm legitimately excited about seeing Eugenio Velez when team comes North.

Opening day lineup features one rookie from A ball as an injury replacement for Vizquel, and two other new additions in Rowand and Castillo. The 1-5 slots in the order are veteran holdovers from last years team.

Roberts LF

Aurilia 1B

Winn RF

Molina C

Durham 2B

Rowand CF

Castillo 3B

Bocock SS

Zito P

Well, Bocock is younger than Vizquel, Rowand is younger than Bonds and Castillo is younger than Feliz.Everybody else is one year older than last year, except for Durham and Aurilia who are 2 and 3 years older respectively.

:banned:Only 161 more to sit through. Maybe someone under 30 (other than Bocock) will start tomorrow.
Cain :P
Maybe somebody under 30 where we have the option not to?
It took three games but here come the yoofs. Velez and Rajai Davis get the starts. MLB.com shows Davis at 3B and Castillo in LF but that's gotta be a mistake.Lincecum scratched from his start due to weather? In Los Angeles? Sure hope there's nothing more than that going on.

Billingsly too. They expect a rain delay. I was excited to watch this game too. No Vin Scully feed and now no good young pitchers to watch. Im going to bed.

I was really looking forward to watching the two youngsters duel tonight. The second I heard one was going to be scratched I lost a lot of interest, the second I heard both were being scratched I fell asleep.

Nice win tonight for Lincecum in relief.

The bullpen has been solid so far but will need to be consistent to keep the Giants in ballgames. The lack of offense gives them very little margin for error. Blowout wins will be scarce.

Lincecum struggles, but gets the win. I expect that to be the theme of his '08 season. ;)

Actually, considering how much he got jerked around with the rain delay, it was an admirable performance.

I'm relatively optimistic that the gigantes will have a good bullpen this year. Well, at least decent. I'm excited that management made the right call and kept both Merkin and Threets.

Sanchez starts today. I've always liked this guy even though he's never had much success in the majors. Let's hope he can figure somethings out today and miss some bats.

I dunno. The Giants are looking better than I expected. They're on pace to win more than the 17 games I predicted they would win all season.

But, I'm still holding true: 17-145 this year.

The Giants were left to admire Brewers starter Carlos Villanueva, who originally came through the San Francisco organization but went to Milwaukee in the 2004 trade that netted pitcher Wayne Franklin. There is a story here in Cheeseland that when the Brewers asked for Villanueva in the deal, Giants general manager Brian Sabean did not know who he was.

Does anyone in San Francisco ever bring up Nathan/Liriano/Bonser for Pierzynski? How does this guy Sabean still have a job?

Can't mention Sabean without hearing the nathan deal mentioned. At the time I (and a lot of other people) thought it was a fair deal.I have no idea how he still has a job.

ooof ... 2bb, 8ks, and 7ERs.
A LOT better last night. 6 1/3 2 BB 10 K and 0 ER - pretty snazzy. Two walk-off wins in a row over the padres has me smiling for a change. Giants' fans challenge this year is to enjoy the wins without letting the losses bother you too much. Fred Lewis' double play and Daniel Ortmeier's gamewinning hit were also very enjoyable.

Think Sanchez keeps his spot in the rotation when Lowry returns? Looks like either he or Correia would be going going back to the pen.

Good question. Sanchez would give them another lefty in the bullpen but if he can pitch like he did last night, a swingman would be a waste of his talents. I wonder if either of them could be packaged for a bat.It could be academic since Lowry is 1-2 weeks away from throwing off a mound.

Can we move Zito to the pen? I expect one of Lowry, Correia, and Sanchez to be traded before the break. 3 games in a row! We better enjoy it now while it lasts.

I'd like to see a Ztio "injury" followed by several "rehab" starts in Fresno to work on his arm strength and command.

John Bowker used to sing w/ Sha Na Na, now he's up with the big club.

Sickels rates him a C+ prospect. He's probably the closest thing the Giants have to a power bat in the high minors (22 HR in the AA Eastern League last year). I'm surprised Schierholtz didn't get the call instead, but the decision makers saw a lot of both of them just a few weeks ago.

nice debut, 2 for 3 with a 3-run HR

Bowker stays hot with two more hits, another HR and four RBI.

We'll see if he's in the lineup tomorrow against Randy Johnson.

Nice to see Bowker with a strong debut. He and Freddie Lewis are making the Rowand signing look sillier day by day. Why oh why did Sabes sign a veteran outfielder when the position prospects are tilted towards the outfield?

At this point, I'd like to see

LF Bowker

CF Rowand

RF Fred Lewis

with Randy Winn traded and R Davis as the 4th outfielder.

Alternately, maybe they can move Bowker to 1B and bring Schierholtz up to play RF with Freddie Lewis in LF.

The Giants called up Burriss? Great, ruin another no-hit-SS not ready for the majors.

You know so far they haven't been completely horrible.

I truly do not understand this organization. The Burriss call-up made no sense to me. OK, you need a backup plan to give Bocock a day off, why not call up the AAA guy Ivan Ochoa? Why start Burriss' option clock so early when he's clearly not ready yet? Next, why DFA Raj Davis? He is a perfectly good 5th outfielder (OK, he'd be better if he could hit a little more), but as a late inning defensive replacement/pinch runner he has a lot of utlility. Bizarre. Finally, in closing, #### Barry Zito and his rediculous contract, and #### Sabes and Magowan for panicking in the 2006-7 offseason and throwing all that money at him.

I don't think the Burriss and Rajai moves will crack Sabean's bottom ten list. Arbitration clocks aren't a major concern for grade C utilityman prospects. We're not talking about Jay Bruce here. At least they didn't go out and sign Neifi Perez or something. I'm wondering if there's something about Rajai Davis that we're not privy to, because I agree he's a useful player, especially with Roberts out. Even if SF gets nothing for Davis, the Matt Morris deal wasn't bad by Sabean's standards.Only 5 7/8ths more seasons of Zito's contract (plus a club option for 2014) :goodposting:

Oh, I agree the Burris-Davis moves aren't the most significant in the universe, they just didn't make any sense to me. Burris isn't likely to ever account for much (though he did hit a sweet opposite-field double to score the go ahead run in the 13th last night), and I'd way rather see him than Neifi or Jose Vizcaino or Ramon Martinez or someone like that, but still, it doesn't make any sense to me.And then, why DFA Davis rather than put Fransden on the 60 day DL (which gives another 40 man roster spot, I think)? I suspect you may be right about there being another reason we haven't heard yet.

Is F. Lewis worth having in a keeper? I like what he's doing right now, but any guesses on how he'll end up this season? I've seen very little of his play, but I have been following him a bit this year. Anyone actually seen him play? Can he play? Any comparisons?

Lewis is already 27 so there's probably not a lot of development left. He's always been thought of as a LHB side of a platoon, even though his limited big league production against lefties has been pretty good. He's already outlasted Rajai Davis, Schierholz and Roberts, which ain't much but it's the only competition he had.I don't think he has much power upside but he's always been a high percentage base stealer. If he can stay in the leadoff spot against RHP and not totally suck against lefties, he can have some value as an OF5.
