Sanchez named starter (1 Viewer)

The future is now in New York.

The Jets have seen enough of rookie Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens to determine a starter.

Coach Rex Ryan has informed the QBs this morning that Sanchez will be the starter, FOXSports.com has learned.

Despite a rough start against the Ravens in his last preseason game, Sanchez never lost his cool and battled back. The team has been impressed with his command of the huddle and the offense. Sources say the team has been impressed with how much he has not looked like a rookie.

Drafted out of USC, Sanchez has gone 6-of-12 in two preseason games, with one touchdown pass and one interception.

Clemens, in his fourth season, is 9-of-14 for 84 yards in the preseason. He also has one score and one pick.

A former Ravens coordinator, Ryan took over as coach in the offseason after the departure of Eric Mangini.

Very likely that both QB's will start games this season. That's usually how things go with a high drafted rookie QB. Who starts the season really doesn't matter much. If you're counting on using either of the Jets QBs to start week 1you're already dead in the water.

From what i saw on Monday night there was no reason to give the job to Clemens. Sanchez was off early but he did come back with a nice drive ending in the TD pass to Washington. He does seem to progress through his reads and looks composed for the most part.

Of course this was all pretty much inevitable given his competition.

I stick by my belief that Sanchez should hold a clipboard for a little while....

I have that belief that if you need to switch back and bring in Clemens, it's a horrible situation but, if you need to bring Sanchez in off the bench later on, there is less stress and he can come in with less of spotlight and be the hero...

Sanchez has very limited Game time experience at any level... I think he should watch and learn how an NFL QB prepares for a REAL week, plays the game, analyzes the game and then prepares for the next opponent.. Clemens has watched two of the best and very different QB's work thru this in Chad and Favre....

While Clemens hasn't lit up the preseason - He actually played real good football IMO against the Ravens 2 years ago and should have beaten them on the road if not for a horrible dropped pass...

Clemens can also run a lot more of the offense at this point and handel a lot of the shifts and changes Schott likes to do at the line....

Sanchez had 2 delay of game penalties along with really TWO pick 6's last week.....UGGH!!!

Clemens comes in cold and throws a pick 6 in the 2 minute offense but, settled down and IMO did a lot more Vs the same backups Sanchez scored on.

And also - The Jets schedule is BRUTAL... Let Clemens take his lumps and Sanchez watch that for a while...

I hope it works out but, while I like the fact that Rex Ryan is a Gambler and likes to go for it, I kinda think he's being influenced by Flacco and Ryan last year which IMO is the exception and not the norm for Rookie QB's who actually have a lot of college experience.

I like it too. Sanchez will be fine - he'll have some rough spots, but like Flacco last year, the RB's should be enough to compensate for his lack of seasoning. More importantly, it seems Sanchez has shown enough that teams won't be able to completely ignore the pass, because they'll get burned - he has a good arm, he's accurate, and he won't get rattled.

This is the right call. There's just something about this guy. I preferred him to Stafford all last year and still do. In fact, I prefer him to Flacco.

As others have mentioned, Ryan got to see firsthand how a rookie can start right away if the coaching staff supports him with a strong running game and defense. Sanchez's lack of significant collegiate experience certainly isn't ideal, but he's looked as comfortable as guys who started 3 years of I-A ball. And let's not forget Flacco came from I-AA and jumped right into the pros. Some guys just handle the pressure better than others.

The combo of a Miami/NE defense might be interesting. You get 4 games against Sanchez and another 4 games against Buffalo with a dreadful OL...8 games where either Sanchez or Trent Edwards is throwing the ball...very nice.

I think Ryan knows Sanchez isn't ready, but knows he is the future while Clemens isn't... so why delay the inevitable? I'm not sure I agree with Ryan's decision, but I certainly understand it. As I recall, Flacco was flat out awful the first 3 games last year. The only way a rook can develop is in actual games.

The other thing is that the Jets can offer some pass protection... this isn't David Carr's O line in Houston. It isn't that Houston D either, and the Jets have a very solid running attack. All things that can make a rook's transition less painful.

I think this gives Keller a slight bump, and Clowney a big bump. Probably a push for Cotchery. Ryan was on ESPN radio at 5pm EST. The third player he talked about after Sanchez and Clemens? Clowney. He said "This kid has beaten someone deep in every game he's ever played in." While that is factually incorrect, it's true that in any game he's ever been in for more than a play or three, he has beaten teams deep. Granted, we're still talkin preseason, but, if you are looking for a sleeper WR... my man Clowney. Ryan said he will get much more time with the ones (IMO he has already won the #2 WR spot with Stuckey in the slot) and he also said he may be our Devery Henderson who averages 20 yards a catch. Not that being DH is the best comparison, but you get the idea.

Some good points in here.

True, Sanchez didn't really win anything...its just that Clemens showed he's still Clemens. If he was a capable vet who could manage a game well, it would make sense to have Sanchez sit and learn. But its not like he gives them a markedly superior chance of winning if they play him, so give the keys to the kid and find out if he is another Flacco/Ryan.

I think it is a mistake. As others have pointed out, he has very little starting experience even at the college level. I'm sure Ryan is looking at what Ryan and Flacco did last year, but I think that will be looked at as an anomaly. They should trade for McCown , Leftwich, or T.Jackson if they are not happy with Clemmons.

I couldn't agree with you more. Let Clemens take the lumps (there will be many to go around), and let Sanchez learn on the sidelines. While Flacco did start last year, it was mostly due to the injury of Boller and THEN the sickness of Smith...if those two things don't happen you could make the case that Flacco would not be starting this year...and while he had a good rookie season, it was not a Ryan/Manning-esque season. In fact, he did little more than Couch did with a far inferior team (not comparing the two overall as far as potential goes, just the first year).I see no reason to throw Sanchez to the dogs...this is not a a guy who started 40+ games in college like Phillip Rivers. This is a guy that took over halfway through his season and while he did good, it was still just 8-9 games. Let the kid learn as Clemens at this point is just a "throw away" QB.

sanchez was under duress for the entire time the ravens #1 D was on the field (if it weren't for Lewis' drop, Sanchez would've had two pick 6's), however, you have a first year coach with a rookie QB. I like the idea of going with "your" guy and throwing him to the wolves and either galvanize him or david carr him.

Carr had a putrid O line, not much of a running game, and a defense that made Houston play from behind almost all of the time. Sanchez's situation is quite different. Much more similar to Flacco's situation last year. Please, don't pik a nit here... I know that the Jets D is not the Ravens, etc, but taken as a whole, a much more similar situation than the one Carr was thrown into. Sanchez has a proven workhorse RB in Jones who can pick up a blitz, and explosive RB in Leon, a proven possession WR in Cotchery, an up and coming TE who could be very special, and two unproven but promising WR's in Clowney (killer deep speed) and Stuckey who is great at finding seams. Pro bowl center, and a very solid O line that can run AND pass block. The more I think about it.... starting Clemens would be treading water. Sanchez steps into a team situation that few 1st round QB's have had. Might as well go with the kid they traded up to get.

Clemens couldn't even beat out a rookie and even made more mistakes in camp after 4 years in the system. Time to move on to the future. I'm all for this move.

Poor choice. It wouldn't hurt Sanchez to wait a couple games at least. Clemens would do just fine now - which is better than Sanchez. Looks like Ryan is looking at the future and giving up on this year.

I agree, dude limped into the starting role.Prediction : Bust.

Start the Texans D vs Sanchez week 1 (in Houston)

next up vs Sanchez are Patriots & Titans, I'm making a trade to acquire New England right now.
