Santonio Holmes arrested! (1 Viewer)

Sorry no link. I just heard this on TV, WCMH TV4 in Columbus, Ohio. Santonio Holmes was arrested last night in Hilliard, a Columbus suburb, charged with domestic violence. No other details were available at this time.

First off, my apologies to those that I argued with about Holmes. There was a guy or two on this board (sorry I don't remember who) that said he had character concerns. I argued that there was no evidence of any at all and that he never displayed any character issues at all.

And yet he's been arrested twice in what 30 days? So clearly there are some issues. Not sure how this will pan out but the red flags are flying high now.

I was thinking Moss might be the best producing rookie WR this year... figured Holmes might wreck that... maybe not.. isn't this strike two with the chin?

I think I may have been one of those people, but I admitted at the time that I didn't have real "evidence", just read whispers about it. Sad that it seems to be true.

They need to get him to pittsburgh and put him under house arrest until training camp. They've got to put the presure on this kid to change his ways. If nothings done he will just get worse and will not see another contract in the burgh and he needs to be made aware of that.

I'd pay to see the scowl on Cowher's face right now.

It's way too early to predict the demise of the Steelers, but this off season has not been good.

ANOTHER ARREST FOR HOLMES

The Associated Press reports that Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes was arrested early Monday for domestic violence.

The arrest came just after midnight. Holmes was taken to the Franklin County (Ohio) jail. His first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday. The police aren't giving out any details as to who has made the complaint or what Holmes allegedly did.

The first-round draft pick out of Ohio State also was arrested in Miami during Memorial Day weekend for disorderly conduct, apparently as part of a local crackdown on folks who act up outside one of the many South Beach clubs.

Said coach Bill Cowher following Holmes' first arrest: "Whatever he did wrong, I don't think he handled it properly. I think he'll learn from it and understand the scrutiny he's under. We have not talked face to face about it. I don't have any long-term concerns."

In April, the Steelers traded up from No. 32 to No. 25 in order to select Holmes, who was the first receiver taken in the draft. The second wideout, Florida's Chad Jackson, landed with New England in round two.

Jackson hasn't been arrested for anything. Yet. Given the position he plays, it's almost statistically certain that, at some point in his career, he'll be dragging a tin cup along a set of steel bars.

Sorry about that. I really thought he was a good kid with decent character. Amazing what happens when they get their first taste of adulthood. Some, actually most handle it great. But a few seem to lose their way.

Clearly he can't handle the decision making alone. He needs a father figure around him to keep him straight.

right, I hear Chris Henry migh have some "free" time available.. definetly the NFL needs a formal mentoring program....

Where is all of the criticism of Cowher and the Steelers for drafting poor character players, and in the first round to top it off?

First time for everything. It doesn't look good for anyone involved though.

Nothing to be sorry about. Just watch and pay attention to alot of Big Ten stuff as a PSU alum and had heard some whispers about him beyond the normal OSU-inmates-running-the-asylum stuff. :D

Here is one. Any guy that has three kids from two different women (neither of which he is married to) before getting out of college has some character issues. At the very least it should make you question his judgement. I was very surprised the Steelers took him but I was hoping for the best.

It is still too early to say but right now it looks like passing on Chad Jackson and LenDale White in favor of Holmes may have been a big mistake.

"High character guys" are still being paid lip service at the draft. Teams will always take premium talent players that have flaws and hope it works out. Even after they wash out of one team, there's going to be a collection of teams that are interested in that player.

The Chiefs took DE Tamba Hali and there were analyst's that were jumping on them that it was too early. Everything that you hear about Hali is that he's a high character guy, non-stop motor, highly driven, etc. but it was too early.

I'm not defending Carl Peterson with this pick (this is just as an example), but every GM is faced with taking a safer selection of a player that has a clean record and a very solid reputation or taking a player with a higher ceiling, but has a few misdemeanors.

A disturbing trend to say the least.

Bengal fans, back off though. This is an isolated incident, not a pattern. Don't be so defensive. If your team wants to draft a cavalcade of high talent/high risk guys, some criticism is the price you pay for getting first round talents in round 3. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

Also, in regard to the "high-character guy" thing, you sometimes can find that a so-called "high-character guy" wasn't necessarily.

Twenty years ago today a high-character guy - Len Bias - died of a coke-induced heart attack. Leading up to until he died, everyone had great things to say about him - on and off the court.

You just never know.

Of course being arrested doesn't mean he did anything wrong. Sounds way too early to really form an opinion one way or the other, since no details came out about what happenned.

As an aside, I wonder how these incidents will affect Holmes in terms of his contract. You would think the Steelers are going to be a little reluctant to give this guy a huge signing bonus...

Just translate the bonus into performance incentives and put some clauses in the contract reguarding off the field problems.

Um, it's more the fact that the Steelers fans have always been quick to jump on their high horse whenever the Bengals have had problems. How about you guys worry about your team and we'll worry about ours and things will merely get settled on Sundays. By the way Roethlisberger got cited today.-QG

So did the woman that ran into him (failing to yield the right of way). Ben was cited for driving with an expired permit and not wearing a helmet (required for drivers with less than 2 years experience).

I don't know who you're referring to, but I have never "jumped on my high horse." Personally, I could care less what the Bengals do. Both of my brothers are Cincy fans, and we've discussed this a number of times. Marv and the Cincy brain trust seems to have no problem taking chances on low-character / high-talent players. That's fine - it's a strategy. Sometimes it's going to pay off, and sometimes it's going to bite you in the rump. If you're going to employ that strategy, you have to be prepared for negative press, though. It comes with the territory.Holmes, on the other hand, was never cited as a discipline problem or anything like that prior to the draft. The Steelers typically try to avoid such players. The same can't be said for Cincinnati, who drafted guys like Henry and Nicholson knowing full well that their draft stock was tumbling due to off-the-field behavioral issues. They're taking a chance knowingly - it's a strategy. And that's fine by me. It doesn't mean that every time another player gets in trouble, you jump up and point your fingers, as if to say "look, they're doing it too!" That reeks of trying to justify your own team's draft strategy. Don't. Just embrace it, or find another team to root for.

Wasn't referring to you specifically, but every time something in the slightest has happened with one of our players there's plenty of Steeler fans that feel the need to dump in the Bengals threads - if you're not so inclined I salute you.

QG-there will always be haters that will take every opportunity to dump on Bengal fans. EG is not one of them. He likes to instigate but in a fun way. The best thing is to take the high road and let them have their fun. Bengals fans will have plenty to celebrate in the years to come so I'm just sitting back and enjoying it. The STeelers were handed a title and hats off to them. They should enjoy iy. When we get ours I hope it's earned and not awarded. Nothing against the The Steelers because it was out of their control. That's just the way it goes sometimes. But they did put themselves in a position to get it so they need to be congratulated for getting there anyway. It was a great accomplishment.

Great post except for the bolded part. I do like to instigate, but just to add spice to the rivalry. The Bengals sucked for so long that it's great that they have a solid team now and are providing the Steelers with a worthy challenge. As I said, my brothers are both Cincy fans, so I needle them too, but I don't dump on the team. Hell, I might even root for them if they ever make it to the big one. Of course, they'd have to get past the Black & Gold first, so..... not likely. :)

how exactly was it handed to them??
Don't take the stinky bait. Carson Palmer's lifetime record against the Steelers going into the playoff game was 1-3 and the one game he won he was the fortunate recipient of 4 turnovers and a 94 yard kickoff return to the 3 yard line.Maybe the Bengals would have won had Palmer not gotten injured but it certainly wasn't a sure thing based on past performances. The truth is we'll never know who would have won.

My position is that the Bengals defense was at fault in the playoff loss for twice giving up double-digit leads but most Bengals fans ignore that fact and say the Steelers won due to a cheap shot. Whatever...

Like any good fan you're still in denial. I'm not going to debate it again because it's pointless. Absolutely nothing to be gained by another deabte. But it's fun discussing over some beers.

Eh...this off-season has been absolutely atrocious for us. :(

I don't think we'll implode next year, but if we do, at least we managed to get the job done and win a Superbowl title before it happened. :)

I've got to regrets from this team....they won a championship and acomplished their mission, so even should they fall apart in 2006 I won't feel as though the team has failed.
