Santonio Holmes OUT For Week 8 (1 Viewer)

Likely due to his pot issues. From RotoWire:

Coach Mike Tomlin said that the Steelers have deactivated Holmes for Sunday's game against the Giants. He refused to characterize the move as a suspension and didn't say whether Holmes would miss more than one game. Tomlin did suggest that Nate Washington would play a bigger role in Week 8 with Holmes out.

SANTONIO WILL SIT ON SUNDAY

Our buddy Tim Benz of WXDX in Pittsburgh tells us that Steelers coach Mike Tomlin will deactivate receiver Santonio Holmes for Sunday’s game against the Giants.

Holmes was cited for marijuana possession on Thursday.

Tomlin declined to call the move a suspension. Technically, teams are not permitted to discipline players who have been charged with drug or alcohol offenses.

Nate Washington will start in place of Holmes. Dallas Baker and Limas Sweed will both be active for the Steelers

Alby's Blog: Santonio Out Sunday

Friday, October 24, 2008 – updated: 1:34 pm EDT October 24, 2008

Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes will be inactive for Sunday's game against the New York Giants after his Thursday afternoon arrest for marijuana possession.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said he has spoken with Holmes about the situation

"When you're a great team, there will be distractions," Tomlin said.

Wide receiver Nate Washington will start in place of Holmes.

Running back Willie Parker is listed as doubtful for the game. Offensive tackle Marvel Smith will not play. Defensive end Aaron Smith will likely miss the game for personal reasons, too, Tomlin said. The Steelers said Smith has their total support.

Obvious bump for Nate Washington but it may also provide a bump for Mewelde Moore whom they may have to rely upon even more as a receiver out of the backfield.

Not looking good for the Steelers right now. I wonder if that line will drop to a pick em by game time.

Then what the hell are they doing? So he sits this week and then the league suspends him? Awesome. I HATE Santonio Holmes.

Holmes = idiot :bag:

Why can't these guys wait 5 years until their careers are done & then smoke themselves silly?????????

Un-flipping believable! Not that anyone else cares, but it happens after my trade and waiver deadlines in a league where I have Marshall and Drive on bye. So I have to go with an empty spot at WR this week against a team that I am fighting for a playoff spot.

How can these guys not be smart enough to not get caught! I guess that's why they are football players.

Just dumped Malcom Floyd for Nate. I have Holmes and am fortunate to have a player I was able to dump for Washington. I'm in a 5 player keeper league and Holmes was one of my five keepers. I really expected a "break-out" season from the guy, but boy was I wrong.

Why couldn't he wait a week? Where's Scuba Steve or whatever Ricky Williams' buddy's name is?

At least I can try out my shiny new Hank Baskett or Roscoe Parrish toy now!

They are young, rich and stupid...who's fault...I say the NFL's.

Why give top money to those who are young and not even proven to be a NFL player..let them earn it as time goes bye!

Not just this case..mean most coming out of college and not used to this big time NFL life style.

Since I took Washington in the 20th round of the ultimate survivor, I'm awfully tempted to post a dancing pickle here.

........

This really screws me combined with the byes. I will have a starting trio of Curtis, Gage, and Walters. Nothing like starting 3 borderline #3 wr's.

With six NFL teams on a bye in week 8....3-4 on suspension....6-9 injured (GTD/or out).... two teams playing outside the USA in bad weather....this is a very bad week for me!

:towelwave: Of course, it's not the player's own fault.
I notice you only copied the first line..not the whole post.My point was if they have a standard of salary rules when entering the NFL start low and let the player work his way up to high money..less money might help these young players mature into life, knowing they can get a lot more if they do well.

my dad has always wondered why these guys with so much cash just don't bring the party to their own crib....call up the ho's, strippers, drug dealers, etc and just party at our own house....you decrease the chances of getting in troble by ohhhhhhhhh.....98% or so

Owner of Winslow and Holmes

Sick of these dirtbags. Getting like the NBA
I can you having a beef with Holmes for being caught with an illegal substance, but Winslow had a staph infection and was suspended because he chose to be honest about it, to his GM's dislike.I think there are WAY more players with WAY worse offenses than being honest or holding on to a dimebag.

See HERE for some references that deserve way more scorn than you are heaping on these relatively innocuous offences.

My 2 cents.

Has nate washington ever been the #2 on teh Steelers?

Was just curious as he usually just catches a bomb once in awhile when they bring him in

Obviously it's minor in the big scheme of things. That doesn't change the fact it is illegal. It also doesn't change the fact it is utterly stupid, and hopelessly moronic, or that you are letting down not only your team's fans, but, and far worse, your fellow players.

Holmes loss hurts every Steelers player from a FF standpoint.

With Holmes, M. Smith, A. Smith, FWP, and BMac on the shelf for this one, if the Steelers scratch out W, Tomlin should win coach of the week regardless of the specifics of the game.

Extrapolating the grief he causes your fantasy team out to him being a terrible individual is a little far-fetched, IMHO. Me, I'm colored by the fact that I think there are tons of worse things we've seen professional players get involved in than puffing on ganj.Yes, it's illegal, and yes it was stupid of him to get caught. But let's be honest: the outrage in this thread over Holmes stems much more from it hurting people from a fantasy perspective than it does because he let down the team.

I totally agree that this thread is not about morals. However, I disagree that that this discussion is centered around FF. I play in only one league and go against Holmes this week. However, I am a lifelong Steeler fan, and absolutely despise the way he let the team down.I'm not pissed for fantasy purposes, I'm pissed for NFL purposes.

Its funny the average Joe..not (Joe the plumber he don't count)..would be in court in a week..bet this takes to late December just for court! Had a license plate lite bulb out..plea not guilty..court set for within 7 days. Told police if you get your city to fix the pot holes wouldn't have a blown out license plate bulb!

Sounds like your dad is speaking from experience. Also how in the hell do they ever get a DUI? Hire a stinkin limo you idiots. Holmes could have smoked it up in a limo and never had a problem.

Is there a chance the NFL can suspend him for more games? I might just pick up Nate Washington
Yes. The NFL could levy additional time off.No. Washington benefits greatly from Holmes presence. He will struggle to beat a #2 corner, particularly with safety help. I don't think he's worth the spot unless you're desperate.

Most people don't get arrested for possessionof a blunt or two.

Does this make Limas Sweed startable this week?
I would wait to see what happens this week before I would start Sweed. Right now it is not even clear whether he or Dallas Baker will emerge as the #3.I can see Heath Miller getting a lot of targets this week.

I wouldn't start Nate Washington this week, I am a holmes owner who just picked him up, but I think I'm going with Kevin Walter.Hines field is supposed to be a mess with nasty weather all saturday and 2 highschool football games being played there. The field sucks already. Aaron I get burned deep Ross will be covering Hines Ward because he's more physical and Webster who's been locking down everyone all year will be on Washington. I think Ward and Miller benefit from these situations.

I think it depends on the league. Holmes wasn't exactly lighting it up this year so far, but I think Nate Washington will put up similar numbers based on opportunity alone. If you were starting Holmes, Washington is probably a good play. If Holmes is out for an extended period of time, then Washington gets a big bump beyond this week. It's a tougher call on whether I would have started Santonio over a guy like Walter in the first place. In one of my 16 team dynasties, I have TJ, Avery, Santonio, Rice and Malcolm Kelly. (Start 3). In this league, Washington was probably my best WW option. Others, there are probably better plays.

I disagree here. Sitting behind Holmes and Ward is not as much an indictment on his NFL ability as it is an indication of how talented Holmes and Ward are. Nate is one of those guys that just seems to make plays when he is on the field. I am not saying that you will mistake him for TO but I do think he is a sneaky good play this week and any other week(s) Holmes may be suspended.

Last year Holmes and Ward missed 3 games each. Nate played in 16 games and had 4 starts. How did Washington step up and play?In week 4 at Arizona, Ward was out and Nate Washington had 2 catches for 18 yds.In week 5 at home against Seattle, Ward and Holmes out, Nate had 3 catches for 26 yds.In week 12 at home against Miami, Holmes out and Nate had 1 catch for 6 yds.In week 13 at home against Cincy, Holmes out and Nate had 2 catches for 16 yds.In week 17 at Baltimore, Ward out and Nate had 5 catches for 68 yds.So, in those 5 games where either Holmes or Ward or both were out, Nate Washington had 13 catches for 134 yds, a 10.3 yd avg and 0 TDs.He's a good #3. Personally I think he'll struggle on the outside. I'd rather be wrong than right for what its worth.

Holmes has too much iupside to be benched for Walter. I know that you can argue that Washington would put up simular stats to what Holmes has been doing all year, but for what its worth, Holmes is still a much better WR. I'm not crazy about Walter or Washington this week so I may just flip a coin tomorrow morning because #3 wideouts are the hardest to predict.

Someone just dropped Holmes because of him getting busted. I wouldn't have dropped him because I think it might be only a couple games. I was thinking of picking him up but wanted to know what others thoughts are on how long the NFL may suspend him if at all. I would think that he will get a couple games at least. Others have been suspended for there conduct but I don't know how this compares to a conduct suspension?
