Sarkisian passes on Oakland HC job (1 Viewer)

As did Whiz last year.

1 meeting with Al Davis and he withdrew his name from consideration.

Have to imagine that SS is doing much the same.

:lmao:

I am just guessing, but Sarkisian's rejection could be a matter on money. It is being reported that he had three meetings with Dictator Davis, which leads me to believe he had a serious interest in the position.

What a train wreck!

umm, is Art Shell still available? :lmao:

Raiders coaching candidate Sarkisian rejects offer

By Len Pasquarelli

ESPN.com

In a strange twist that left the Oakland Raiders jilted by their first choice to succeed Art Shell, Southern California quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian on Friday evening rejected the team's offer to become its next head coach.

League sources who confirmed the move by Sarkisian gave no reason for his decision. The Raiders had offered a contract longer than the two-year deal Shell signed but further details were not available.

The presumptive front-runner for the Oakland vacancy for much of this week, Sarkisian interviewed on Wednesday with team officials for the second time in two weeks. He then flew back to Los Angeles, but returned to the Bay Area on Thursday for another round of interviews.

In fact, the Raiders even interviewed Southern California offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, who was Sarkisian's choice to be his No. 1 offensive assistant, on Thursday. That prompted speculation that the club was close to finalizing a deal with Sarkisian.

Sarkisian, 32, served as the Oakland quarterbacks coach in 2004 and, while he has not been a coordinator or head coach, he fit the mold of the kind of coach owner Al Davis has traditionally sought. Davis typically looks for candidates whose expertise is on the offensive side of the ball, and who are young and innovative.

A former Brigham Young quarterback who played three seasons in the CFL (1997-99), Sarkisian has a limited coaching resume. Beyond his two stints at Southern California (2001-2003 and 2005), Sarkisian was on the staff at El Camino (Calf.) Junior College in 2000.

In a related matter, San Diego Chargers wide receivers coach and Hall of Fame member James Lofton, who met earlier this week with Oakland officials, withdrew his name from consideration for the job.

Beyond Sarkisian and Loton, the Raiders have interviewed current Oakland defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel. ESPN.com reported Tuesday that former Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green rebuffed overtures from Oakland officials to arrange an interview.

It is not known if Oakland will expand its search now or simply work from the pool of current candidates.

nobody wants that job. that's how they wound up with Art Shell last year.

should have just given the job to Norv Turner last year.

I think Rich Kotite is in a lawn chair outside the Oakland Coliseum with a sign that reads "Will Coach the Raiders" right now.

concord la salle is a perennial prep powerhouse & near oakland... maybe a high school coach would be better fitted & suited to the job...

When a guy who is that underqualified (I mean come on...4 years as USC's QB coach plus a year at a JC?) won't take the job, you KNOW this is a bad gig.

I just pray Josh McDaniels isn't dumb enough to make take it.

this franchise has officially sealed itself as a JOKE

it was just stamped before, now they put the clear plastic over to seal it.......what a gong show

breaking news - al davis offered the OAK HC job to the janitor but was turned down, because his current job is more prestigious & has a better future...

That’s embarrassing. A college coordinator turning an NFL team down is a slap in the face. Being turned down by a QBs coach, ugh.

Jim Fassel was on with Mike & The Mad Dog on Wednesday. He said his meetings with Davis went well, and he DOES want the job. He'd be a helluva lot better choice than some of the names which have been floating around. At least he would bring some credibility to the job, as he was a HC in a recent Super Bowl, and his background is offense which is our glaring weakness.Let's just hope that Big Al has enough sense to pull the trigger.

I'm guessing Sarkisian was asking for too much.
Agreed, he was probably seeking something outrageous. You know.... like being able to hire his own staff, structure a gameplan which doesn't include ten passes over 40 yards every week, his own Raiders sweatshirt, etc.

Pretty much what I was thinking. Al is making it harder and harder to keep paying for season tickets. :wall: :bag: :banned:

A couple of moves in the past has really snakebitten the Raiders for the long term. 1) Drafting Todd Marinovich. I think that's the last time Al Davis dropped a high draft pick for a QB. Who knows, maybe it's that bitter taste in his mouth about USC QBs that left Leinart out of the Raiders draft plans last year. But to be fair, I think the signs were there that old Todd would lose his mind eventually. I read that for his tenth birthday, his dad made him celebrate by running 10 miles. Didn't have a hamburger until he was out of college. Never had a candy bar until he left high school. Weird stuff like that. I'm sure Michelle Wie will end up running on the green covered in peanut butter and candycorns on day while singing "Put Them On The Glass" in true lose your mind Marinovich fashion. Something about kids with psycho driven parents that makes me shudder. 2) Not drafting either Vince Young or Matt Leinart. Those guys are both arguably 10-15 year kind of QBs. Why the Raiders passed them up to stick with Brooks/Walters is just baffling. Top QB talent would have easily drawn some offensive minded coaches to the Raiders, at least they'd have something to build around. 3) Passing up the trade offer from crazy Dan Snyder where the Raiders would move the 2 pick ( Gallery) for Chris Samuels and IIRC, another first day draft pick that could have easily turned into another O lineman or two. Raiders could have reanchored their O line for a decade with that move. 4) Losing Bruce Allen after he left to run with Gruden and Tampa Bay. Long time Raider exec was a buffer who probably put out alot of small fires and kept things smooth between Davis and the rest of the team/league. Everyone needs a Tom Hagen in the mix. If Bruce Allen was still around, I'd like to think the Raiders would done some things differently. I'm not sure if long tenure made Allen any smarter, but I think it put him in a position to disagree with Davis on many issues. Losing Gruden wasn't great, but I think losing Allen was the bigger loss for the long haul. If the Raiders had either Leinart/Young, Samuels and a well respected GM who could deal with Davis, I think you see a whole different team.
#4 is soooo overlooked. This move actually concerned me more then Gruden leaving (at the time, obviously not now knowing what we know). Gruden was leaving no matter what the next year, so I was not terribly upset about at least getting an unheard of payoff for a coach (of course in hindsight it probably cost the Raiders their 4th superbowl). But the day Allen left, i knew we where in for an adjustment in the front office that could turn out to be a big mess. Personally I always thought Bruce was the heir apparent to Al.

Sarkisian is the third young coaching candidate to reject the Raiders in as many coaching searches.

Former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Sean Payton backed out of negotiations in 2004 and former Louisville coach Bobby Petrino turned them down last year. Both are now NFL head coaches, with Payton in New Orleans and Petrino in Atlanta.
linkJames Lofton also removed his name from consideration. Maybe we need a list of people who have not turned down the Raiders HC job.

When did he pass up Vince Young? By most accounts, Al was infatuated with Vince Young and was trying to get him, but Tennessee took him at 1.03. Davis has enough missteps over the years that we don't need to make any up. His biggest fault is he is unwilling to give up control and hire a legitimate GM or coach to run the team. Bruce Allen wasn't a true GM while he was with the Raiders, he was more the numbers guy who took care of the cap who had limited say in personnel matter. As far as coaches, he still can recognize the goods(Gruden, Petrino, Sean Payton, etc), but any coach coming in realizes that he would be limited on what they would be able to do as long as Davis was looming over them.

Maybe Al Davis could just coach the team himself.

ETA: He coached the Raiders for three seasons and has a career record of 23-16-3.

Good choice by Sarkisian. Even ignoring his lack of NFL or head coaching experience, he had exactly zero chance of success as a young head coach in that dysfunctional organization. That's not a good place to get your feet wet.

not a given he gets another chance to be an NFL HC, but the decision to pass on the OAK gig worked out pretty well for payton & mangini...

Someone will take the job. That person will be miserable and produce miserable results.
i think i know who it could be but im not saying, ill give you a hint though------> he is who he thinks he is

Not making any apologies for the Raiders and their current plight, but I'm pretty sure I saw an interview with Sarkisian where he indicated the job was never offered to him and he was pulling his name out of contention.

 Green's not coaching next year. He's going into television. A  show, of all things.
I head he refused to interview with them. He told them if they made him an offer there is a small chance he would consider it.

Best thing Sarkisian gets out of this is exposure as a candidate. Makes him a name that comes up again in someones serch.Good move on his part.Al will find a young guy to take this job.

Sarkisian is just being curtious to the Raiders by saying this

the rumor is some high level terrorists were threatened with being forced to take the OAK HC job, at which point they promptly cracked & spilled their guts...

i think the geneva convention would have prevented us from actually carrying through with the threat, though...

http://www.raidersrap.com/2007coachsearch-0119.htmlDespite denials from Sarkisian and the Raiders, Sarkisian rejected the offer to coach the Raiders, according to the Contra Costa Times.

The Raiders reportedly sent two officials to Los Angeles on Jan. 19 to try and persuade Sarkisian to take the job, but he turned them down.

Sources told the Los Angeles Daily News that Sarkisian clashed with Davis over how many changes were necessary, especially on offense. Davis believes a massive overhaul is not required, according to the Daily News.

Another source told the Daily News that former Raiders coach Norv Turner, who hired Sarkisian as an assistant in 2004, advised Sarkisian not to take the job.

Raiders | Sarkisian releases statement

Fri, 19 Jan 2007 18:37:02 -0800

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Southern California co-offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian has released a statement after withdrawing his name from consideration for the Oakland Raiders' head coaching position. "I was presented with a tremendous opportunity and experience of interviewing with [owner] Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders for their head coach position. I thank them for their interest in me. While the job was never offered to me, at this time in my career I've told them I want to stay at USC. I strongly believe that the Raiders job is a great opportunity for whomever their next head coach is going to be. My goal is to be a head football coach in college and USC is the best place for me to attain that goal. I'm extremely fortunate to work at such a great university for a head coach in Pete Carroll who allows me to strive and achieve at the highest level," Sarkisian said.

The NFL Network reports Steve Sarkisian opted out of the Raiders' head-coaching search because Lane Kiffin wasn't ready to come with him.

Sarkisian and Kiffin, who was interviewed by Oakland, run the offense at the University of Southern California. The duo known as "Sarkiffin" to some around the Trojans' football program appears to be inseparable.

According to NFL Total Access, Sark was offered 2 million dollars a year (1.5 more than he makes at USC).
