Save $ on cell service -- Ting Mobile / Solavei (+ other MVNOs) (1 Viewer)

Hulk - family of 5 with 800 min, unlimited text and unlimited data for 3/5 phones, soon to be unlimited data for 4/5. We have insurance on 4/5 phones and are paying around $210/month with T-Mobile. Can I expect anything lower than that, or is that as good as I'm gonna get?

Okay, lets see what can be done. Just to be clear, the 5 phones are sharing 800 minutes? All need unlimited text? 4 out of 5 will need unlimited data? The 210 is with insurance? What is the # without insurance? At first glance, looks like you're doing pretty well averaging $42 per phone. Are you okay with other carriers? Are you okay with having multiple plans with multiple carriers, or do you want them all on the same carrier? Also, if you give me a breakout for each phone in what they need it would make this easier. Ie phone1 250 mins, 1500 texts, 3 GB data; phone 2 etc, etc, etc... It would be most helpful if you can be specific about the typical use beyond just "unlimited" as you may not actually need unlimited. TIA.

When I get further details, I'll see if I can do better than this (which is making some assumptions).First 4 phones on Solavei. Sign the first up independantly, then the next 3 directly under the first phone for that $20 a month discount. Last phone on Mingo Wireless, which is on Sprint. None of this would include insurance, and it may be overkill for your actual usage:Phone 1: Solavei. $29 a month, unlimited talk, text, 4GB data at HSPA+42 speeds, 2G speeds beyond 4GBsPhone 2: Solavei. $49 a month, unlimited talk, text, 4GB data at HSPA+42 speeds, 2G speeds beyond 4GBsPhone 3: Solavei. $49 a month, unlimited talk, text, 4GB data at HSPA+42 speeds, 2G speeds beyond 4GBsPhone 4: Solavei. $49 a month, unlimited talk, text, 4GB data at HSPA+42 speeds, 2G speeds beyond 4GBsPhone 5: Mingo Wireless. $20 a month, 200 minutes of talk, unlimited text, 20 MB of data. Please note that they're phone offering are not the latest and greatest.Total: $196. No idea what insurance would be from an independant, depends on the phone.ETA: If you're getting subsidized phones from T-mobile, there is no way this setup beats your current one. If you're not, it might.

Wow, that was quick, thanks. None of the phones would need a ton of minutes, as 3 of them are for teenage girls so it's all texting and data. Your breakout was pretty much spot-on for usage, and from the looks of it T-Mobile seems to be within a few bucks so it makes sense to stick with my current plan. Two of the phones are S3's and two others are smartphones, so the insurance would push me over the $210, or at least it's close enough to maintain what I've got. Thanks for checking - I'm still hopeful that we can get it down to less than this amount in the future, as $200 seems like a ton to pay for phone coverage, but them's the breaks I guess :hophead:

Seriously, post your phone by phone break out, I'll find you some savings. Seems like if your daughters can keep their talk minutes under 100 a month, t mobile's $30 plan would work for them perfectly.

That's what I was thinking too

Two of them can but one of them cannot. I'll try and list the breakout in a little bit, as I've got a ton of work on my desk right now

No worries. I'm around for about an hour more, so if it's after that I'll take a look first thing tomorrow.

A full day in after switching from AT&T to Straight Talk, and there is no noticeable difference in service. I wish I had done this months ago. Its only been about 12 hours, but so far so awesome.

Fodder for the conversation... Does anyone get a discount because they work for employer X? I'm getting a 20% discount with Verizon. Really I'm not interested in everyone's discount, but rather I'm wondering how such a discount affects the MVNO business model(s) being discussed.

I had one when I was with Sprint. Was still way better off ditching them. From the rough estimates I've come across, it seems like about 80% of smartphone users would be saving money on pre-paid... I've always assumed the 20% who are better off with the carriers either have large discounts or some specifically large need, like unlimited data on 5 phones or something.

This is a copy/paste from another forum, but I thought I would paste it here in case anyone had some insight:Background:My two-line sprint contract has been up for a month or so now; my wife and I are jumping ship to GSM prepaid carriers. My wife already has her GSM phone, I do not. I plan to port both numbers to Google voice so that it is easier to jump around prepaid carriers until we find the right plans for each of us.Question:Is Sprint going to try and force me to sign a new contract if I port my wife's number to Google Voice (effectively terminating her line)? Or will they let me stay off contract for a pro-rated porting of the expired contract?I have a feeling that I may be better of waiting until I can port both numbers to Google Voice at the same time, but my wife's current phone is all but dead, and she really needs the new one ASAP.

They might. No idea what he's waiting for. He doesn't need his GSM phone in hand to port to Google Voice.

Trying to get my brother's family on to Ting, but they have Verizon and are reluctant to switch.#1 They're in a contract. Is Ting still doing the ETF rebate? Looks like they are, but I'm not 100% sure.#2, and here's where I need a hand. They love the Droid Xs they have and want to keep the same phone. What's the solution for this? I imagine hacking the phones is the way to go, but my SIL is going to freak out over the chance they could be bricked. What might be an alternative, to have them sell those phones and then buy unlocked Droid Xs online? I imagine that short of doing it through Craigslist and having the seller meet them at a Sprint store to ensure the ESN is clean, there's a chance they could get F'd.ETA : I know they need CDMA phones rather than GSM, so I can walk them through that part of it.

Oh, that's me... this is my current situation: the Nexus 4 I ordered on Monday is scheduled to be delivered today. ;)The reason I have to wait to port a number to Google Voice is that it will kill the line I am porting from. Since I am already off contract I just want to wipe my hands of Sprint and be done with them when I port.

Hulk, little help (have not read every post)I have 3 lines at Verizon (let's not talk specifcs right now - we both now my bill is over $100). And I have AT&T land line and interent. What changes are you advocating for the best deal?

Dammit! How did I not see this before?! This is totally us and I just checked and the promotion is over. Grrrrrr.

It is? Ugh, that's a deal breaker for sure. No way they're paying $250 to get out of their contract, they're way too cheap.

The ETF deal ran out in 9 minutes. If you had signed up previously, they quitely offered you 1/2 the deal (Up to $175 per phone ported). If you didn't sign up by early Feb, you missed the boat. You'll need to hack the phone to do it. They have a forum, maybe someone has already done it. Theoretically it is possible. I don't know enough about it to do it myself. If they're not heavy users, just show them the math. The next 2 years they'll pay Verizon X for service plus Y for new phones, versus on Ting they'll pay A for service, B for phones, and Z to Verizon for the ETF. Chances are STRONG that they'll still save 1K+ over the next two years, even paying the ETF. Have them get GS3s or something, way better phone than a Droid X anyways.

Ah, you did it! I knew you would. I sensed a kindred spirit, the Nexus 4 is too much to resist!//Just wait until tonight then to do it. Although you don't have your SIM yet for the next phone, right? You could always port to Google Voice and then activate it on Ting while you wait for your SIM to come in. I STILL don't have my SIM yet, and it is killing me that I have this beautiful Nexus4 and can't use it yet.ETA: Which service are you going to go with?

It depends entirely on the specifics ;)Post your usage for each line individually (minutes/texts/data) and I'll see what I can find. Also good to know which carriers near you are good (or at least good enough), what kind of phones you like (high end, mid range or last years high end, or whatever is fine), and what your current bill is before taxes/fees. All of that info should be available online via Verizon. Thats enough for me to work from.

Well, you can still get $25 off with them if you use one of the 3 referral links in the first post. Mine, EG's, and themeanmachines. We get a credit to our account if you do... seeing as i've already gotten 3 referrals via this thread, use one of theirs imo.

I paid $450 to get out of mine. And it still made financial sense over a 2 year view.

Yeah, the wife is actually getting the Nexus for now though. I may wind up with an actual burner phone for a month until I figure out what I want to do.

I'm going to be nearing the point where it'll be feasable over a 1 year view to get out of my current Sprint contract. If Ting offers the ETF buyout program again and allows me to port my Galaxy SIII over to them, I'm all theirs.

I would bet they offer it in some form again. They've done it twice. Once almost a year ago they bought out 1 person's contract a day for a full month. For this last one, they paid up to $350 per line for ETFs, but they had a cap of 100K set aside to fund it. The 100K ceiling was broken in NINE MINUTES! Lol.As for porting your Galaxy S3 over, you'll need to wait. Sprint won't allow that phone to be part of Tings BYOD (bring your own device) program yet. You can have a GS3 on Ting, but you need to buy an unlocked one from them right now. I suspect shortly after Sprint starts selling the GS4 that you'll be able to bring your GS3 to Ting.

I have a year left on my contract, so I'm not exactly in a hurry. Hopefully by the time the GS4 rolls out and/or my contract is up, my SIII will be portable.

You should look hard at Ting. I'm not sure how much data your using but I'm betting its not much right now. Only thing is, no iphone on Ting yet.On Ting, for 3 phones, 1000 minutes, 2000 texts, and 1000MBs, your monthly bill would be $68. You'd need new phones though. If you want to keep what you've got, take a look at PagePlus Cellular. They're on Verizon's network and you can bring your phones. They have some really cheap plans (including $12 for 250 mins, 250 texts, 10 MB, which might work for your 2 dumbish phones). Worth looking into.

Signed up with Ting. Having problems applying referrel. Hopefully will fix tomorrow and get my own link.
If you used mine and need to give them my email or something, just pm me.
I did. Looking at it again though, and apparently the first referrel gives you $75 thru March 15th.Just to make sure we optimize our referrel....EG have you received one?
I doubt EG has one yet since he just got his referral link yesterday. If you can give it to him, do it. Might want to PM him and get the email he registered his account under. Just in case since you used mine initially, I'll PM you my email if needed. Its important you still get your $25 off too.

I just plugged my wife's average use into Ting and it's $23/mo - she hardly uses any dataI'm averaging about 1.25g/mo, and I feel that's right about borderline between Ting and Solaevi, at the 500 minute/1000 text level
Then let which Carrier is best by you make the decision for you, or which phone you want.

Finally got the issue resolved with my phones. I bought two HTC EVOs and ported the numbers over with no problem. But I failed to check the phones before hand and one of them was DOA. Ting did what they could, but since I bought it off ebay I'll have to work with the seller on getting an exchange (which should be mailed on Monday I'm told). Was able to use EG's referrel which was nice. I got my own referrel as well, and I've sent it to Hulk to put on the first post. Despite the problems I'm very happy with Ting's service. The problem wasn't their doing and resulted in extra work for them, switching phone numbers after being ported, but they were very helpful and quick to act.

Added Rascal's referral link. Also, learned today that Ting's customer service is only available Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM EST. Which is kinda disapointing. Still great service though when they are there.

That is true, but I still got assistance as the rep took time out of his day on Saturday to give me a call.

Nice. Ting pretty much gives me wood IMO

Just an FYI for anyone ordering a SIM card from Solavei. I ordered mine on Tuesday and it still hasn't come. It's sent via the postal service, so it's probably their fault, but its still annoying that it is taking so long. My Sprint contract ended this weekend so I'm actually without a phone today :(

FYI, when I got my first one, it came through as $50. I had to contact support to get the remaining $25 added in. But, it was a painless process, I just emailed the person who helped with my wife's Note2 return and she fixed it.

All right, just one last check-in on this thread. Which, again, I must thank HULK for starting as it has been a revelation for our family. Customer service and about $15/month difference gives Ting an advantage over the other provider we're looking at, Virgin Mobile. However, one big feather in Virgin's cap is unlimited data and, the biggest one of them all to my wife, ability to get an IPhone (albeit a 4 or 4s). Is there anything I'm missing with Virgin? Anyone have bad/good experiences with them? We're looking at a Samsung Galaxy Victory for her with Ting, but an IPhone 4 is only ~$60 more with Virgin.
