Schilling's "bloody" sock (1 Viewer)

Thorne said on the air, while the Orioles were batting in the fifth, that he'd been told by Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli that was not blood, but paint, on the sock Schilling wore during Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Yankees. It was done for the public relations effect, Thorne said.
Someone painted a sock for the public relations effect? :(

Although I don't think it was anything but blood. It would be great if it was since I can't stand Schilling.

There's no doubt in my mind Mirabelli, a known jackass, said it jokingly to Thorne. Thorne is an idiot for saying it on air without looking into it further, not to mention waiting two years.

I dont understand why people give barry such a hard time when people like schilling are going around painting socks. There needs to be some kind of testing in place for things like this.

Here's what kills me, he just brings it up out of no where. WTF?

There's too much down-time during a baseball prodcast for them to come up with dumb ####.

My only other thoery is that there is a rift between Mirabelli and Schilling. It is possible they don't like each other as Schilling does grate on some people.

Mirabelli could have been just shooting his mouth off giving a low blow to Schilling. It doesn't mean that its true, it just may mean Mirabelli doesn't like Schilling too much.

This would explain why Mirabelli has been denying ever saying it at all. If he was joking, he probably would have come out and say he was joking. But if he knows this is going to add to a rift between the two already, he would have to deny it.

On Mike&Mike in the morning today, they read an article published not too long ago about Schilling's sock in Cooperstown. The article says, "The sock is not what you expect it to be. In the two years since, the blood on the sock has now faded to a light brown color and is not the bright-red blood-soked sock you remember from the 2004 playoffs."

Blood on a sock would fade; paint on a sock would not. :goodposting:

HTH.

"You're kidding me, right?" Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein wrote in an e-mail last night. "I'm the GM of the team, not Jerry Springer. I couldn't give two [expletives] about what was on his sock, I care that we won the game. The rest, and Gary Thorne, is just noise."

Actually I heard on EEI this morning that they are pretty chummy, they are often seen shooting the #### in the dugout during games on Schill's off days. Like I said before, there is no doubt Mirabelli said it to Thorne. Thorne would never make such a thing up, attach a specific player's name to the statement, and then when asked about it by a reporter say "go ask him (Doug)".Mirabelli is the ### here for not putting out the fire by saying "yeah, I said it, it was a joke. I can't believe the idiot believed me." I think he panicked, worried about Curt being pissed at him, and denied it.

FranDog were talking this morning about getting CSI: Cooperstown on the case. This story is ridiculous. It's obvious that Mirabelli was having a bit of fun with Gary. He should have just been man enough to admit it.

Are there any Boston fans NOT defending the "blood"?Anyway, .
Wow Sonny that hurts. I am about as cynical as they come about a lot of stuff. I don't particularly even like Schilling that much. However, I think the blood was real. They just had Dr Morgan who performed the surgery on the radio and he said categorically that what he did would have caused Curt's ankle to bleed under any pressure at all, never mind a baseball game.I think I am going to have to believe the Dr on this one.

JTC and wilked, it was just an observation. I don't know one way or the other, but I don't think anybody does.

As to wilked's surgery question, yes, I've actually had both knees reconstructed and an ankle (same tendon, no joke), but whatever. Sure, there's varying levels of blood but I just don't think that that is evidence enough.

What I found awkward is that the wound is vertical, yet the stain is more horizontal. On top of that, blood would flow downward, not sideways. If they indeed did this (which is funny if nothing else), it sure looks like the red stirrup gets in the way of where bleeding would more apt to be. If that's the case, it makes sense to play the prank on the white part of the sock, no?

:lmao: Classic breakdown here, good stuff. I'd love to see the full explanation of blood flow on exterior wounds and how you break down where the blood "ought to be" relative to the red stirrups.

So please - elaborate. Let's see some diagrams here for the "Magic Bloodflow".

Good stuff in here.

I'm no fan of Schilling but come on guys
You really don't think they could have played a joke? I think it's funny, if true. Not even possible huh?Do ALL Red Sox fans categorically deny the possibility? I think that's even funnier, actually. I mean, it's not like some Yankee fan conspiracy theory or some ####.

Look, the guy announces it on national television; he probably thought about it a bit before doing so, no? It's only his career...

Thorne comes off looking like a doofus. Just had a retraction on Sportscenter saying he talked to Doug and didn't know he was just joking. You better know what you're talking about before calling someone out on national tv or you're going to be doing a lot of backpeddling.

Many non-Red Sox fans deny the possibility too.And evidently he was not thinking before he said it since he's issued a retraction.

I think it's stupid all around. Anyone who thinks Schilling is some hero for playing hurt is a turd. Anyone who thinks he painted his sock on purpose is delusional. That's my point. This thread belongs in the Shark Pool because most baseball fans outside of NY and Boston could give two ####s. Give me Donovan McNabb playing on a broken league for an entire half or something like that to impress me. Schilling on his period would barely be noticed in July and the media blew this way out of proportion.

Saying it's "delusional" is an equal overreaction. I don't follow baseball like some around here so it was not hard for me to believe a story an announcer gave. They play plenty of pranks in baseball and I thought this was one.

My point is that I don't care. I really don't. No offense intended.

This is the best post of this whole topic.I heard a sports guy here in Milwaukee making a huge deal of this on Friday. I kept screaming at the radio, SHUT THE #### UP !!!!!!!! WHO CARES????????So so so very stupid
