I'm a co-commissioner in an IDP league and we are looking to launch defensive points up so that the top defenders are equally as worthy of a high draft pick as top offensive players are. I'm finding it difficult to flesh this out so I'm wondering if anyone could post their scoring settings if you're in a similar league.Ours is 6 pts all TDs, .5 PPR, 1pt per 10 rush/rec. We start a full 3-4, 4-3, or nickel defense. It's a yearly redraft--I don't know if that changes things. I'm thinking we might have to scrap the whole TD = 6 pts foundation and start from scratch to make this work, but maybe some of you IDPers can help.
There is simply no way to do this because of the positional dropoffs.RB's will always be at more of a premium because the dropoff is much steeper. No scoring adjustments can change the number of players that are of similar scoring. Defensive players are just more plentiful in whatever scoring structure you have.Your only real option would be to make sacks a huge point getter so the top D-linemen and sack specialist LB's are really valuable. And possibly make INT's super valuable as well, so coverage DB's are more important. But then all of these fringe defensive players become more valuable than your true stud LB's that get a lot of tackles. And it almost becomes a crapshoot from week to week because sacks and INT's are fluky and streaky like TD's on offense.
Have you test driven a league like this before or is your statement based on conjecture? I am in agreement with you that there is not much drop-off in defensive players overall, but I'm wondering if you've actually tried it and the league ended up being a crapshoot as you said. I've been noticing over the past three years of our league that total defensive units put up pretty consistent numbers if they are "studly", whereas the weaker defensive units are much worse, so I'm thinking it might actually work regardless of the defensive depth available to anyone (which it is currently anyway)None of us have ever drafted this way, so it would be an interesting spectacle to all of us involved. I still think the offensive players would go off the board sooner overall - but I'm much more into the idea of drafting Karlos Dansby than Terrell Owens in theory.Perhaps this topic has been discussed in the past, but I'm really looking to see if anyone has ever tried it.
