They also ruled out three starters for Sunday's game at Washington - linebacker Scott Fujita (knee), safety Roman Harper (hamstring) and cornerback Randall Gay (hamstring/illness).

troy evans, i believe, serves as his back-up.
That's the speculation from the local beat writers. With Simoneau to IR, there's not really anyone else that can play outside. On the surface, it looks like a significant bump in tackle value for Vilma this week with Harper out as well. However, the Saints have also lost a bunch of their tackle rotation -- Hollis Thomas is on IR and Antwan Lake won't play this week, making the loss of Orien Harris to Cincinnati on waivers even more painful -- and Vilma could be faced with a few extra blockers if Brian Young isn't ready to take on a bunch of snaps. Probably good news for Kaesviharn and even Bullocks this week, too.

Hollis, ultimately, was not placed on IR. He reached an injury settlement, which allows him to come back later in the year while they wait for his return. If he went on IR there was no way he could return to the field. They just needed the roster space, apparently. The T-P did a better job of explaining it than I did. They still have Clancy, McKinley and Young to pair with Ellis at DT. Clancy, they speculated, would get the start because he's built for the position and performed well last week. I'm not so worried about Vilma just yet. Simoneau, though, is a bit of a loss. He's very versatile and played well in coverage for the Saints. During camp, Payton kept saying how Simoneau was fighting off the Vilma challenge. This leaves the Saints thin at LB, no doubt. Evans, Mitchell and Dunbar, really? Yeesh. Mitchell is a decent ST but hasn't shown anything that would indicate he could step into MLB like he did at UT.
