Run Blocking
Okung did a very nice job of shielding the defender away from the play backside. Showed good technique in "inviting" the end or tackle to the outside and then using the defender's momentum to keep the defender out of the play. When asked to drive block, Okung was very inconsistent. He needs make better use of leverage, as he stands up too straight while making blocks. He also has a habit of not keeping his feet moving after initial contact which allows the defender to either drive him back or make an inside or outside move. Not good while pulling, was very slow. Did show a nice ability to stay under control when asked to get to the second level. Did not show a lot of strength, did not have many good drive blocks. Very inconsistent with technique in the run game. The athletic ability is there, though.
Pass Blocking
Did a nice job initially setting up for the pass and shuffling his feet, but must do a better job moving his feet during the whole play. Was susceptible to the bull rush on a couple of plays because of this. Needs to anchor his "backside" a little better when taking on defender. Stayed upright on several plays. When technique is sound, Okung bends his knees well and can really move his feet. Gave a nice pocket for Zac Robisnon for the majority of the day.
Overall Game Analysis
Okung has one thing that cannot be taught to an O Lineman - great athletic ability. He did a great job in pass blocking setting up quickly and shuffling his feet in pass protection . . . most of the time. When Zac Robinson took a 3 step drop, Okung neutralized his defender with no problem. When Robinson, took a longer drop, Okung had a little difficulty sustaining his block, mainly due to very poor technique. He needs to keep his feet moving. I was a little dissapointed in his power in the run game. He was not particularly good at drive blocking, and did not look to be overly strong in the running game. Again, he needs to get his pad level lower, or defenders will use leverage to blow up a play.
