Scouting the preseason games (1 Viewer)

massraider posted some Raider thoughts in another thread and I thought we might get some homer eyes-on reports to chew on during the preseason in a new thread.Although it's not worth putting too much stock in the preseason with the vanilla defenses and mismatched ones on twos or twos on ones in some series, there are some valuable observations that can be made.Reposting massraider and my reply from the Raider linebacker thread here to kickoff the discussion.

Very little to be taken from the first preseason game. Morrison barely got his jersey dirty, Howard and Williams both looked quick, and Clark got a few reps with the 2nd team.Darnell Bing actually looked very active. Missed a tackle badly, but stuck his nose in there a few time.FWIW, I saw no switching of the LB's, aside from one play, when Williams blitzed. Just Howard at ROLB, and Williams at LOLB.
:goodposting: I think there are a few things worth taking away. First, and maybe most important to the prospects of any of the Raider backers, is that Tommy Kelly looked bad. Morrison blew a tackle, but he was getting blistered by interior linemen with a running start on him. Agree with massraider that Howard, Williams, and Bing all looked pretty good. Bing in particular showed a willingness to mix it up and beat Clark to the play more than once. Howard and Bing both played in the nickel with their respective units. And if this game is any indication, all three backers may be blitzed on any down. Morrison narrowly missed a sack and Irons, Williams, and Howard all came on other downs. And, while I don't disagree with WisWolvrns that putting too much stock in preseason happenings is asking for trouble, I see no reason for the Raiders to move Morrison to the middle and give Howard first team reps from the first snaps of camp just to see what they have. Unless one of the current first teams is injured or flops horribly, Clark is a backup. Also, FWIW, Simoneau and Barber were the nickel backers for the Eagles and McCoy looked pretty good to me. Gaither also looked okay against the Raider twos, but got swallowed up one-on-one by bigger linemen more often than not. Looked to be pretty aggressive though.

Nothing other than an obvious observation, but Victor Adeyanju has been the Rams bright spot on defense. He was an interesting guy before the draft, and you look at his measureable, and wonder what the problem is. Just in this first half, he looks real, real active from the LE spot.

Gary Brackett left with an injury, had hs leg looked at, but is chilling on the bench, doesn't appear to be serious.

Tye Hill getting some reps. Been around the ball, but haven't seen anything good or bad.

Who took over from him when he went down - from the stat I'd expect Keiaho or Hagler - and neither is his direct understudy

Rob Morris
With only one tackle to his credit then it looks like the OLB are the ones to have...
Meh, Morris is the junkiest of junk. I haven't had a chance to look at the game yet, but I'd like to see if Keiaho was making plays because Morris was bad or because of scheme.

Browns | Linebacking corps shines in preseason opener

Published Fri Aug 11 4:10:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Jeff Walcott, of ClevelandBrowns.com, reports the Cleveland Browns' young linebacking corps enjoyed a solid performance in the team's 20-7 loss Thursday, Aug. 10, versus the Philadelphia Eagles. LB David McMillan recorded two sacks, while LB Kamerion Wimbley finished the game with five tackles in limited playing time.

Watching the Cleveland/Phiily game:

Cleveland's ILBs are either a total mess, or Crennel is experimenting with players/packages: D'Qwell played in the base on all regular downs and 3rd down at the goaline, Leon Williams played inside in goalline/short-yardage, only Davis in the dime.

D'Qwell looked the most active and will grow into a sweet long-term keeper. He had one bad read but may have been gap rsponsibilities.

Matt McCoy is impressive also and very active (second time I've seen him). Too bad he's not in the nickle either.

I love both as keepers!

Keiaho had a few tackles but, like Matt Stewart for Cleveland, they were just in the flow of the game 5-10 yards downfield. Keiaho actually got juked by the QB near the goaline. Very out-of-control and raw.

Patriots | T. Jones injured

Friday Published Fri Aug 11 9:57:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots S Tebucky Jones (hand) was injured during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 11.

Guh.

Driving through Chicago is ridiculously frustrating. On the plus side, I did get to see a few snaps of the first half of the Green Bay/San Diego game while hanging out in Madison, WI this weekend.

The ones for both teams played into the second quarter. Without a rewind button, here's what stuck out to me.

Green Bay

Barnett looked pretty motivated. Made a few plays near or at the LOS. Hawk was active but seemed to be a half step slow in finishing plays. Looked very good evading blocks -- even hurdled a OL at one point to get an assist in pursuit. Did get burned pretty badly by Antonio Gates on one play when Gates came in motion to his side -- no big deal there.

Hodge got some time against the Charger ones (I believe) in the late first and some extended time in the second quarter with Hawk. He's a player. Attacking gaps, taking on blockers, finishing plays. Some rookie errors but he's going to be good.

San Diego

Kiel and Jue started. Kiel looked solid in run support, but was out of position in coverage over the middle at least once. McCree rotated in pretty quickly and was more visible in coverage than Jue to me. Again, no rewind button to confidently say for sure.

I've read some notes about Wilhelm looking good (and Dobbins -- didn't see his snaps though). Meh. He was solid but not special. The guy you should have an itchy trigger finger on is Stephen Cooper. Despite what I've read over the last couple of weeks stating that Wilhelm was the LILB backup and most likely to play there, it was Cooper who lined up in Donnie Edwards' spot. And he was always around the ball. More often than the boxscore would suggest. Looked shorter than I remembered but played strong.

Also, if it's possible, both Merriman and Castillo were more active than they were last season. Merriman showed up only 1-0-0 in the box score but he was solid on one coverage play and turned a couple of runs inside by blowing up his blocker.

Off to watch the WAS-CIN game. And I'm hoping to check out parts of the CLE and IND games from Friday, too. :banned:

WAS @ CIN

Wow. I can't remember seeing so many corner and safety blitzes in the first quarter of a preseason game. Like some kind of a death match or something.

Ones on ones for much of the first quarter. Not much to report but a couple of things stood out other than the aggressive secondary play. As a Bengal homer, I paid a little more attention to the home team. Landon Johnson is a player. He deserves to start somewhere in this league. All over the place. Very good in coverage, always in position in backside pursuit. He and Simmons will do fine. Both Madieu Williams and Dexter Jackson came up quickly in run support as expected. Williams looks like he's not worried about the shoulder.

And, although it was twos on twos, Ahmad Brooks looks really good. Nothing special in the boxscore but he showed excellent game speed, took on blocks well, was in position to make plays more than you'd expect a rookie to be, and was really quick to respond in coverage on backs coming out of the backfield. Don't sell the farm just yet on Odell Thurman, but this guy looks like the real deal. If he's available in your dynasty league, go get him.

On the Skins side of the ball, pretty much what you'd expect. Carter and Daniels looked pretty good, Archuleta came up quickly but never had an opportunity to finish. I don't think he played more than a series and a half or so.

Box scores show West making ten tackles for IND in this weeks game.

Can't find West on the depth chart for the latest Training Camp Update.

Who's West and is he gonna make the team?

The Skins starters were only in for three series. Sounds like a lot for the first preseason game, but those three series were all three-and-out so we didn't get a great look at any of the expected starters. Rocky McIntosh played a lot, though, and looked okay.

Defensive lineman Marcus West ...

DeMeco Ryans looked very impressive! He is going to be a player. Cowart will be hard pressed to useat him.

Anyone see how Thomas Davis looked for CAR?
From what I seen, he looked lost.
Please explain. I've seen the game twice now and I fail to see how he looked lost, he looked smooth in coverage and played his lanes well. The starting defense didn't give up one first down in four series so they sure didn't take advantage of him being "lost".

Thanks. There he is, a DE yet, riding with the third team.Ten tackles is a fair days work. Was looking for a LB on the depth charts.

I'll keep him on the radar. Looks like a candidate for DEN in '08. :hey:

Jene beat me to the punch on Ahmad Brooks. I was really impressed with his play, especially for a guy coming in later than his teammates. Unfortunately I got outbid on the waiver wire for his services.

I watched a lot of Cleveland-Philly so I could see my 3rd rounder (Dqwell Jackson). Duke looks like he's still thinking instead of just instinctively playing. No reasons for worry at this point but it may be a sign that he's not quite ready to start, or if he does start he may not contribute as quickly as one might like. Fortunately we've got a Taxi Squad :football:

Lost may have been a bit harsh. Being a Davis owner, I was disappointed. I was just expecting to see more from him ... know what I mean? He still looks green, and its prolly just a case of he's still learning the position and is a player concentration so much on where he needs to be and what to do, he fails to showcase his abilities. I don't even think he had a stat. He very well may have played within the structure of the defense, I don't know. I wasn't ablle to give that game my undivided attention, which is why I said from what I seen. You watched it twice so you would no better than I. I wish I hadn't erased the game, so I could watch it again. Ah well ... we should get a better look this weekend.

I was impressed with Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard in the 2nd half of the Giants game. He was all over the field.

Giants rookie LB Gerris Wilkinson has looked good two games in a row. Given Arrington's fragile knees and Emmons's penchant for injury I won't be surprised at all to see this guy earn signifiacnt playing time this season. Definitely one to watch on the Dynasty radar.

Kiwanuka added a sack and a forced fumble. He's got 2.5 sacks in two preseason games. Granted they've come against reserves but once that kid reaps the benefit of an NFL weightlifting regimen he's gonna be a monster.

Will Demps once again showed no ill effects from last season's knee injury.

CB Corey Webster looked real good in coverage.

I get what you mean, and to be honest if the big boys in the middle(Kemoeatu, Jenkins) stay healthy, the main beneficiary will be far and away Dan Morgan(or whoever replaces him when he gets hurt). Look for Davis in the sack column if anything, being on the strongside he's looking right over Peppers shoulder and the coaches will look to use him alot as a pass rusher.

Did not see the Pats-Cards game, but O Huff 6 tackles 6 assists in the first half caught my eye. With Dansby being in the doghouse, I wonder if Huff scored some points with the coaching staff with that game. If the WLB spot is Dansby vs Huff, the matchup is not turning out as I expected.

That will probably be Seward.

Hound: What have been Gerris Wilkinson's strengths so far? i drafted him with my early pick from watching his play at Georgia Tech where he was pretty sweet. I just dont know much else about him at this level and i only see a few tackles each week from these preseason games. I was expecting more production i guess. Does he look like a "Coughlin guy" ?

 Help me out here please. I know the coaching staff likes him but I've not seen any indication that Seward will be utilized in any major role this season. Have you seen/read/heard something different?

He meant Seward will probably be Morgan's backup at MLB.

So he is going to play 15 1/2 games this year!

Wilkinson has the unique ability to back up all of the LB positions. That in and of itself should help him find the field sooner as opposed to later. The Giants have much more depth on the strong side which is arguably the worst fit for Wilkinson so once again his strength/weakness in relation to the unit's strength/weakness is a good match for him. There are actually rumors circulating that starting WLBCarlos Emmons will not make this team. Emmons has struggled with a myriad of injuries since joining the Giants. They parted ways with another guy who couldn't stay healthy (Barrett Green) in the offseason. Coughlin, like Parcells, really values the player who is able to practice. Guys who spend all week in the training room typically don't get a lot of PT with him. If Emmons is cut the only player in line to potentially start on the weakside ahead of Wilkinson is Brandon Short. Short is a steady but limited guy. Once Wilkinson proves to the coaching staff that he has mastered the schemes he'll be inserted in the starting spot. Right now the learning curve is his primary enemy. An old school guy like Coughlin would rather go with a steady but unspectacular player who knows his assignments over a young buck brimming with talent but short on game knowledge. As high as I am on Wilkinson as a prospect I'd never advocate overpaying for him. Precious few owners even have him on their radar screens. He went undrafted in my rookie dynasty draft. My initial feeling was that he'd likely need guys ahead of him on the depth chart to get injured before he threatens for playing time and significant production this season. However seeing as one of those guys is Emmons, that's not as long a road as it may appear to be! Don't judge Wilkinson from the preseason boxscores. Preseason will water those down by nature anyway. In both games so far Wilkinson has been all over the field. He's shows solid pursuit and good angles. In limited duty he's seemingly shown the ability to roam from sideline to sideline. He's always been known as a good tackler so I don't have many worries in that department. While weakside seems to be the easiest path for him to earn playing time in the immediate future, don't rule out Wilkinson manning the middle if Antonio Pierce suffered an injury. Current 2nd stringer Chase Blackburn is a very limited player that isn't nearly as athletic as Wilkinson. If Pierce got hurt now, Blackburn would win the role. By week 8, it could go either way.Hopefully your league is a dynasty format as I don't think you'll really reap solid rewards on Wilkinson's first year but like I said earlier, he's definitely a guy to keep an eye on.

thanks for the additional depth. Get game tape of the GT/Miami Hurricane game from last year to see him flying around as well.

Has anyone seen anything from T. Hali or Elvis D? I have not been able to catch much of the preseason games.

Did either of these guys do anything of note?

Has anyone had a chance to check out any of the starting rookie DBs? Have any of them actually looked good in the preason games so far?

Anybody specific? Huff and Whitner have held their own and are likely to start and work through some growing pains. Danieal Manning will start while Mike Brown is out (and probably after, too) and has been progressing well. Jimmy Williams has a chance to start, and Bernard Pollard, Pat Watkins or Tye Hill may soon, but I'm not aware that any others are inline for a starting job before midseason.

I was thinking mostly people like that. Maybe starters isn't representative, I was thinking players who are either starting or close enough to starting to see action against 1st strinigers in the pre-season. (Which I think would be more telling than if they don't come in until the 4th quarter). Whitner and Huff, Pollard, Jimmy Williams, and Roman Harper. They all seemed like the best bets to start out of the group, and if not start, they seemed like the most likely to see action against first string offenses in the preseason. There might be a few I'm missing.

Held out of practice this week and the pre-season game with a "tight" hamstring.
Is he worth taking a flier on? What are your projections for him? I love his potential...
Yeah, I'm still chasing after his potential in a league or three. Any 4-3 MLB has the potential to be a top 20 player so he's certainly deserving of a roster spot. However, he's proving to be more fragile than Dan Morgan so he's not for the easily frustrated.

I did not hear anything about Bullocks last night. Did he play? I know he wasn't announced as a starter.
Yep, he mixed in with the ones and twos -- most of the LB and DBs are twos right now though so who knows -- :D .I think we've got off on a DB tangent in the Ninkovich thread. This place is nuts this morning.

Davis looked better this week, but still has a way to go. I beleive once he settles into the position ,he should be a good play, but that may be in '07

Falcons: Brooking in locker room after being clipped (from Neal)
announcers are saying ankle, maybe sprained
Falcons | Brooking returns to practice Tuesday Published Wed Aug 23 1:44:00 a.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) D. Orlando Ledbetter, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons LB Keith Brooking (ankle) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 22. Brooking said, "I've never had a high ankle sprain. From the looks of it, it's very deceiving because it doesn't look that bad. When you go to play, cut on it or get up on your toes, it's kind of tough to do." He is expected to play Saturday, Aug. 26.
