Cleveland Browns safety Sean Jones out with knee surgery

by Mary Kay Cabot

Wednesday September 10, 2008, 11:20 AM

Browns safety Sean Jones will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will miss at least several weeks.

Coach Romeo Crennel made the announcement today and said that Jones will not be placed on injured reserve and that the Browns plan to have him back this season.

Jones first suffered swelling in the knee in the preseason opener against the Jets and experienced it again the following week against the Giants. Jones sat out the final two preseason games, but suffered the swelling again after Sunday's 28-10 loss to the Cowboys.

Fellow safety Brodney Pool might return from a concussion this week, meaning Mike Adams would start in place of Jones. If Pool is still out, Adams and Nick Sorensen would be the starting safeties.

Crennel said the Browns are also looking for available safeties.

What are the odds of the two of us making the same topic at the same time?

You can remove mine AB if you want, no need to have 2.

Not sure what to think here yet.

First thoughts were that this may end up being a platoon with Nick Sorenson in the base defense and Mike Adams in the nickel, but I'm not sure how it'll work out. Much may depend on how Travis Daniels comes along in the nickel package. Be interesting to hear some homer insight here and see how this ends up shaking out by Monday night.

Are we positive Adams will be the SS now?

I ask because Adams had a nice line week 1 (8 solos) but every single tackle was 10 to 40 yards down field. He had nothing at the line of scrimmage as the FS. Not sure if I want to try and add him to a roster or not.

Who knows how this will play out, but whoever plays SS could be in for a huge game with the run attack of the Steelers coming up next. My gut says to pick him up and hope, if you have a roster spot.

From the OBR.com:
Mike Adams is expected to move from free safety to strong safety. Nick Sorensen and Travis Daniels will be the backups.

FBG has this reversed on their depth chart:S: Sean Jones (SS) (inj), Brodney Pool (FS) (inj), Mike Adams (FS), Nick Sorensen (SS), Gerard Lawson

Can we get some clarification on this?

I picked up Adams thinking that he would replace Jones. Then I saw the depth chart. Anyone know for sure?

TIA

I don't want to fail to mention that you guys do an awesome job! :goodposting:

I think it'll depend on whether Pool is recovered from his concussion. If he plays, Adams takes over at SS. If he doesn't, I think it's probably Sorenson at SS and Adams at FS. That's how they lined up in the final preseason game. It's a tough situation to handicap this week. The Steelers use a lot of mulitple WR sets and the Browns are a mess in the secondary, so you could see a bunch of Cover-2, with neither safety having much value. Steelers could also jump to a lead and run the ball a bunch, forcing a safety in the box. It looks dependent on Pool as to who that may be.I'm not convinced there's any immediate value here, but it seems likely that Pool will be back soon enough to give Adams the better value.

i don't know much about idps, but i follow the Browns.there's a pretty steep dropoff of talent from Jones to Sorenson and Adams, who are mostly special teams guys.i don't think i'd expect much from them.

Can anyone give me a read on Sean Jones' value coming back? In 2-4 weeks when he returns, do you expect him to return to the top of the DB rankings for the remainder of the season?

(He's on waivers in my league)

I don't see any reason why he won't. I'd certainly pick him up if you have the room on your roster.
