Seattle homers, who's WR 3 and 4? (1 Viewer)

Thinking there could be real value here after Harvin and Baldwin, given Harvin's history. From what I've seen Kearse looks good and I understand he had LASIK surgery to help eyes. How is Rice progressing? Who is the guy to own after Harvin and Bakdwin?

After Harvin and Baldwin there is not much value. I would probably look elsewhere because the targets and fantasy point won't be there. If I had to choose 2 other guys from that receiver group it would be Kearse and Richardson, but neither is anything close to startable in FF. I think Rice starts the year on PUP so they can keep one extra guy on the roster come opening day. If you are playing dynasty then go get Richardson of the group.

Don't believe anyone that tells you that they know how this will shake out. Total guesswork for the time being.

My guesses:

1. Harvin starts.

2. Baldwin sees the second most snaps and targets, but not necessarily a starter.

3. Rice is the real wildcard. Could see him being cut. Could see him starting across from Harvin. We will have to wait to see how this plays out.

4. I think both rookies make roster, but they have to earn a spot. If outplayed by both Kearse and Rice I could see Norwood getting cut like they did last year with Harper.

5. I don't see Richardson having a big fantasy impact, but he could have a significant role on the team.

6. I wouldn't draft any Seattle receiver other than Harvin. Perhaps Baldwin late in a PPR. You will see some fans comment that the team is ready to open up the offense, but I don't see that happening yet. This roster is still built to control the clock with the run and play great defense. For this coming season, I fully expect similar numbers from Wilson again.

Which is a shame because I think Kearse has some special skills.

Regardless of who starts, I expect targets to be ordered, most to least, as follows:

1. Harvin

2. Baldwin

3. Kearse

4. Rice (if not cut)

5. Richardson

Another random thought....

Pete Carroll has been enamored with giant receivers for some time. He struck gold with Big Mike Williams for one season in Seattle and has struck out since (well, I guess we could argue whether Sidney Rice has been a hit or miss). This off season they brought in Chris Matthews (6-5 218 lbs) from the CFL. Matthews played college ball in Kentucky and made quite a splash in the CFL. His bio from the team website is below.

Other than this I don't know much about him. However, this I do know: If he can play and produce, Seattle will give him that opportunity. I've never seen an administration that was more adamant about giving backup players honest opportunities to win a job.

Originally signed by the Cleveland Browns on July 30, 2011 but was released after training camp on September 3. Did not play football in 2011. Signed by Seattle as a free agent on February 18, 2014. Spent two seasons (2012-13) with the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers and was named the 2012 Most Outstanding Rookie after he put up 81 receptions for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns in his first season. Spent two years at Kentucky (2009-10) after transferring from Los Angeles Harbor Junior College (2007-08) and totaled 93 receptions for 1,279 yards for the Wildcats, including a team-best nine receiving touchdowns in 2010. Attended Dorsey High in Los Angeles where he played tight end and defensive end. Also lettered in basketball. Father, Darell, played football at Lane University and mother, Michelle, played basketball at Texas Christian University. Matthews is a cousin of the late NFL great Reggie White. Majored in community communications and leadership development. Born on October 6, 1989.

Any chance Richardson gets used as a return man?
Doubtful. Harvin is the man on kickoffs. There was a short list of players that were being worked out as a punt returner and Richardson wasn't one of them. It was sort of a surprise that the team is voicing that FS Earl Thomas was currently in the lead to win that job.

The team has said Thomas is the likely punt returner for a while now, but I don't see it. That's a huge risk for a guy who is clearly the most important player on the defense; punt returners are exposed and too often blown up. Meanwhile Richardson has been saying in multiple interviews that he intends to contribute on special teams by returning punts (he isn't going to contribute in any other capacity on that unit with his build).

I think the team is still trying to ferret out the best player not named Earl Thomas. It will be an interesting competition to watch in camp.

I'm on board with this. I recall an interview where Richardson said he wanted to return punts, but I don't remember reading anything where a member of the coaching staff listed him among the candidates. Quite possible he was reiterating what a coach told him.

The past two years they have increased the ratio of pass/run by 2% annually.....so they are opening it up but it will take two more years at the current clip before it gets to 50/50 pass/run.

The year you win the Superbowl is usually the year you run the most, as you are ahead late in the most games and running it out. If they lose a couple of guys to injury and have a more normal year, I think the tendency will be for them you have to pass a little more just by being in more close games. I'm just saying that the 2% increase you note from last year was probably a higher increase in passing that was partially offset by having so many late leads where they didn't have to pass. My point is that a much faster rate of increased passing will likely come with any adversity, and I think Wilson's growth and their reliance on him will more likely than not mean a much more significant increase in passing this year than another 2%. I think they will feel able to, as well as need to, pass more.

Kearse will likely catch a handful of touchdowns, most of them longer ones, but good luck guessing which weeks they will be. In leagues where you get bonus pts for longer scores, there will be worse guys you could look to as bye week stop gaps.

I'll be surprised if Richardson doesn't start at flanker this season.

Here's what Carroll said about him:

PC (On what does he like about Paul Richardson…) “I like a lot about him. We’re really excited that this happened, and we’ve been watching it the whole time hoping we could get there. He’s got great qualities. His speed is extraordinary. He has the terrific hands and a great catching range, he’s really got characteristics like the guys that have been successful for us.

He’s got quickness kind of like Doug Baldwin, he’s got speed kind of like Percy Harvin, and he has that catching range kind of like Jermaine Kearse so we just felt really comfortable with his style of play.

I see him as a route runner. He’s an outside guy for us, a guy that can really get in and out of his breaks and he’s got great stuff. We’re really excited about this pick.” JS “He’s just really explosive. I think his averages scores are from about 40 yards, 40.05 or something like that so he’s a big play guy.”

But what would Carroll say today if you asked him about Baldwin? About Harvin? About Kearse? I think he would probably be similarly complimentary of all of them.

IMO best case for Richardson is to be the #4 WR in the pecking order for targets this season, behind those three, barring injuries to them. And if Rice makes the final roster and is healthy, Richardson will very likely be behind him, too.

I'm a buyer of all things Seattle passing game in dynasty. Redraft not so much except for Harvin and Wilson. They'll probably eventually have to open up the throttle, but probably not too much in 2014.

Worth monitoring at training camp for sure. He will get a chance to compete.

What we know about Seattle is the best guy plays regardless of how much they paid them or when they were picked in the draft.

Is Matthews going to need his own thread in 2015?

Or does he just fade back into the woodwork?
