We're talking you're close to retirement or in retirement and you're faced with these two choices to either make a little extra money and/or stay busy. This is going down in white suburbia in the northeast so you have a reasonable idea of the type of kids you're dealing with and the type of weather you're dealing with. For the sake of argument, pay, hours and bennies are as Mike Goldberg would say identical. The kids are k-5. The buses are heated.

My plan is to run a hot dog cart on a local golf course. hook it up to a golf cart and just drive the course selling hot dogs on weekends.

I've actually been a crossing guard (after school for a summer school program) and I've ridden on packed school buses more than a few times.

Crossing guard 100%.

Keep in mind we're talking dead of winter at 7am here. This isn't Cali.
Bus drivers probably start just as early, and have to drive dozens of screaming brats around in snowstorms.

But the buses are heated. Standing out in single digit weather with a nice wind gust for a few hours must be the suck.

Crossing guard. You can dress for the weather. I would eventually drive a bus off a cliff.
Is that a positive of being a bus driver? One positive of being a crossing guard is that you're probably a lot less likely to get drug tested so you can still smoke weed.

We rotate carpools with the neighbors. It is either 3 sixth grade girls, or 2 boys - 2nd and third grade. I can barely handle the less than a mile commute with either group. Give me the stop sign and a parka.

No heat in my bus! Now sit down and shut your mouth before I drive you brats off a cliff!

Buses are heated. The original post will be updated to state that.

Crossing Guard - outside.

Ideal - Home Depot or Lowes - I'd be managing the place in less than a month.
The nice thing about bus driver or crossing guard is that its part time. Not sure if that's the case for an HD job. And its retail which is a big no no.

Crossing guard, even with the weather. Layer up and invest in those hand warmers. Being stuck in a bus with a couple dozen 5 years olds does not sound fun.

Can't you consult in whatever you currently do? Both options sound sucky. However, the guy at the airport who drives a transport bus to thrifty parking is retired and loves his gig. Always has candy for passengers and isn't dealing with kids all the time. Usually the bus only has 3 or so people so decent conversation.

The hours of the two options are what appeals to me. It would be nice to get up, go work for a couple of hours, then have like 6 hours off to do whatever and then work for a few more hours. And you're only doing it for 180 days a year. I know the guy that does the car service back and forth from the dealership for my buddy is retired but says its not a great gig b/c there's a lot of pressure to get good reviews or they'll replace you. I'd love to have a programming gig where it was just a few days a week, but I've never seen that.

We hired a contract programmer at 20 hrs a week to handle big picture stuff and be a sounding board for our younger programmers. We would have kept him in that capacity but we ended up hiring him FT because he was shutting down his consultancy.

I plan on being a shuttle driver when I retire, so I'll voted for crossing guard. Less competition.
