Selection Bias - A Sweet Article and a fun part of Footballguys (1 Viewer)

One thing I love about Footballguys is our ability to stretch past a bit beyond the regular fantasy football stuff. Sure, we do tons of rankings and waiver wire things and projections and strategy tips directly connected to Fantasy Football.

But I love things like what Adam Harstad does with his column each week where he picks a topic and dives in. Adam's a long time friend and Footballguy and is fantastic. He is the FSWA 2023 Football writer of the year and I think it's easy to see why.

I loved his recent feature on Selection Bias. Enjoy.

Well written article on some of the pitfalls we, as dynasty players, can fall victim. As Adam said, "Statistics are hard". We are not wired to think in terms of statistical analysis. For me, there is a balance between using some soft statistical analysis and using my gut. The former being a better way to approach this hobby and the latter being much more fun. There's just something so satisfying about "getting your guy"!

I agree with Adam that selection bias occurs in FF analysis all the time.

I notice this the most with combine metrics of college prospects and also in analysis of break out age of college prospects by meeting certain thresholds that determine if the player broke out or not.

Some of these trends are pretty strong but others (RB weight for example) get disproven when players like Achane and so on become a success as an outlier.

Reading Adam's articles is worth your time, fellas. He does a great job of conveying difficult concepts. I've learned a bunch from him over the past few years. He also has a Twitter account and has other outlets that a Google search should bring you to.

Interesting! Until it said I had to upgrade from Pro to Elite to keep reading. I gotta say that surprised me.
