Selling a used car (2 Viewers)

What’s the best way to sell a used car nowadays?

If not to a dealer, used to be the paper, then Craigslist and Facebook marketplace.

I’m not interested in people coming to my home, but can meet in some public location.

FTR, it’s a 2006 Subaru WRX limited, manual transmission, under 130K miles, body in decent shape. But the turbo is dying, so it runs rough. Also needs some other minor maintenance.

KBB for vehicle in “poor” condition (though arguably it’s “fair”) is $5700-7900

Perhaps consider a car donation in that condition? Some pros do doing so (both from a time/ease/and tax financially) so just something to consider.

Yeah, that’s the back-up plan.

Plan A was give it away to my friend’s kids approaching driving age, but none of them want it - scared of manual transmission, and/or not planning on getting license right away.

I’d have killed for this car when I was 15/16, but can’t even give it away!

You should at least get an online offer from carmax and some of the online places. That can give you a base amount for an easy sale and you can decide if you want to go through the hassle of a private sale for the extra money.

Just did this through KBB, and it spit out $4K. But I’d have to confirm with local dealer.

Was that an actual offer or just an estimate of what you can expect from a dealer? Carmax (if you have them in HI) would be an actual offer. You would still need to take it to them to check it out, but as long as you are honest on what you claim about the car then they’ll pay what the online offer says.

Says offer, pending dealer inspection.

Also, this car is coveted in the boy racer demographic. In the past few years, I’ve had a couple randos offer to take it off my hands.

And those guys mod the turbos anyway.

My MIL recently bought a new car and dealer offered her $3,500 for her trade in of a 2015 Nissan Murano (mid/top trim level) with 171k miles and zero issues. I told her I could likely find better. Spent a weekend cleaning it out and washing it, took some pictures and posted on Facebook for 6,500. First guy came to see it and offered me 5,800 cash. Deal done, and we split the 2,300 extra.

As much of a PIA as it might be, I’d think you could sell that particular car pretty easily.
Especially in HI. My brother in law always mentioned how big a PITA it is to get one to and from the island when guys rotate in or out of Pearl Harbor. You'd think it's a solid and easy fit for a young single officer on a 2-4 year stint there.

Underprice it a bit and you’ll sell it on Facebook or Craigslist in a day. I underpriced my last car by about 20% cause I just wanted it gone and also hate the negotiation process. Car was worth $4500-5000 and I priced it at $3500. Put it on Craigslist and received over 20 emails in the first day. Picked the top 3 that seemed the most serious and told them where the car was parked and the keys were in it. If interested text me. First guy that looked at it bought it.

That’s exactly the demographic from whom I purchased the car, nearly 20 years ago.

List it on FB Marketplace for $4K and you'll sell it for $3K in 2 days' time.

You have the leverage, not the buyer. You'll have to "deal" with people at some point, just pick a neutral/public spot close by for appointments. Banks are good options since you both know cameras are all around.

Yeah, this is the way. Or another very good way.

There has to be a local "classifieds" or facebook group for incoming/outgoing sailors, right?
