Senior Bowl (1 Viewer)

Quick comments from the morning practice (South team).

Brodie Croyle was very impressive. It was very windy and he threw very well into the wind. Hackney made some impressive throws after Norv Turner got in his grill. But, overall another disappointing day. Shockley was bad to very bad.

Marcedes Lewis looked unstoppable in the red zone, but he didn't always get good passes. Made some nice catches in traffic, accelerated away from linebackers. He's a keeper, and a good candidate to have a great game on Saturday, because the QBs struggle to hit the wide outs. The other tight ends struggled today.

Forget the wide receivers. Draft one on the second day. They're all the same on this team. They catch the ball if it's an easy play, otherwise they all blow.

Joseph Addai finally showed up. He showed his hands and speed, and was very happy with himself after practice. Norwood still looks very quick and very fast. DeAngelo is starting to look comfortable in the offense. He owns the field. He's getting a lot of praise from everyone. Scouts are very guarded in their comments, but a Redskin scout sitting stands said DeAngelo isn't the best back on the South squad, but the best player offense or defense.

Marcus McNeill and Eric Winston stepped it up today, and it is now okay for me to ask if either of them are better than Scott. But they're not, but Winston is extremely impressive. Still no love for big Marcus coming from my man in Mobile. Ryan Cook is being looked at at RT instead of center. He looked good, and shut down Manny Lawson. Jean-Gilles had a very solid day. Some people were praising Andre Hall for his burst up the middle. Jean Gilles made the middle really big. Mike Degory is going to be an excellent center. Too bad Eslinger isn't there for the comparison. Brodrick Bunkley didn't go today, so the interior lineman all looked better.

Dumervil finally showed why he gets so many sacks. He's got some wicked moves and blew past McNeill for a sack. He gave all the OLs trouble today. Wimbley is better though and his stock is going up.

It's hard to separate the linebackers with the exception of Greenway (who is amazing). Havner looks like the best athlete. Ryans has a cat like quality to him and his strength is very deceptive. He tossed people around today. Howard is fast, but he isn't as impressive as the others, and struggled with his hands. A real sleeper if he finds the right spot in the NFL is Iwuh. He played safety in college and he's working with LBs here, but he hits hard and covers more ground than any of them. Probably too small for the NFL, but his coverage has been great.

He was so disappointed in the QBs other than Croyle and the WRs in general, that he has no comment on the DBs, because he lost interest and watched other parts of practice.
As to Greenway, and the other LBs, could you let us know the ILBs versus the OLBs who are stading out? I'm trying to get an idea who the Pats might go for.

Back again... Nothing but quick walk throughs going on today. No scouts around, as far as I can see. Looks like most of them left already. Weathers chilling more, looks to be partly cloudy with a slight chance of scattered showers for game time. It's currently around 60 degrees now though. Some quick observations...NORTH:North Receivers are still having troubles holding on to the ball. A ton of drops might spell doom for them. The South receivers are coming on strong with Sinorice looking best but LSU's Green is making some excellent plays. Cutler is still loking the part of the best QB on the field. Watch for him to utilize TE Byrd a lot. The "O" line looked sharp Davin joseph looking best. Tye Hill stil looking great. Broke up some passes yesterday. Can't wait to see him in action.Running Backs.. Look for the North to pass a lot. The backs aren't impressive. I think Jerome Harrison is the best of this bunch but not saying much. Stovall loks good still. May have to rely mostly on him and Hagan. Avant still isn't impressing me.North's Defense will ber the best from this group. Seeing them go against the South's offense sghould be exceitingSOUTH:Brodie Croyle is the best QB in the South. Shockley isn't impressing at all. The rest are mediocre at best. Hackney has a rocket arm but the defensive front seems to make him throw too far high. I think the guys like 5'10" or something.Deangelo showed he's the top of the RB's again. LSU's Addai make a nice catch. Norwood has the best hands though and is still looking great.Baskett is still struggling and looking weak. Like i said earlier, Moss is the best WR here. Looks like the South will utilize a RB out of the backfield a lot in their passing game. "O" line looks ok. Nothing great and it will be interesting to see how they match up against that North rush. Defense: Kyle Williams looks really, really good on the "D" line. Demeco Ryans also loks good and covers the entire field well. Borth defenses look even, both good. I think the South is faster, the North stronger. All in all, loks to be a battle between the North's Defense and the South's offense. I think the South's defense can contain the Norths offense. Can't wait for the fun to begin. It's funny though. My buddies and I spent all this money on tickets and almost every corporate tent around here has tickets to give away. If your in the area come on down. Just walk up to one of the tents and grab a ticket. Talk to you all later, enjoy the game

Greenway-- He'll be gone, but he has had the most impressive week of any player there (at any position and on either team). You'll find scouts and fans debating who is the best at every position but LB. Greenway is being compared to Urlacher and he could play inside or outside. He's simply a beast who loves to play football and everybody likes him personally and physically. Hawk was brilliant to skip this week of comparison. ILBs-- If you think the after practice interviews are telling, then the Pats have spent time with Freddie Roach. He's had a good week and put his name in the mix with Hodge and Jackson. Abdul Hodge and D'Qwell Jackson are still the top names for ILBs, but according to someone who's been sitting there watching practice, Hodge has looked a little stiff. Jackson had the better week, and showed safety-like coverage ability to go with his run stuffing presence in the middle. Jackson also "qbs" the defense naturally, while Hodge has been getting "leadership coaching". Roach has looked as good as Hodge. Clint Ingram has shown the talent to play inside or out, and he's been very intense and aggressive. He helped his stock this week.OLBs-- The Pats have been relatively inactive interviewing players after practice, but a scout was seen with DeMeco Ryans and Pat Watkins in the hotel lobby. It looked like they were returning from an early dinner together. Watkins has been the most impressive safety there. Ryans seemed to be hurting his stock for a couple days (he was oddly ignored by the scouts after practice), but he's the type who just tears it up once it's full pads and contact. He's not the biggest or the fastest, but he has the best ball instincts and very deceptive strength, very sure tackling, and he can pack a punch. He could play inside or outside and he's been compared to Lofa Tatupu (in that his weight belies his ability). Reading about him also reminds me of Bruschi because of his instincts. I've projected him to NE, and I may have nailed it if he falls 21 picks. Thomas Howard is the opposite of Ryans. Big, fast, explosive, athletic, but he lacks the instincts and doesn't pick up the ball quickly. Maybe a Roosevelt Colvin type, but that may be too high praise. Perhaps no LB (other than Greenway) did more to help himself than Spencer Havner. Being a UCLA fan I've always known he was a terrific athlete for his size, but he had a bad year (the whole defense was terrible). He's as good in coverage as any of them (but Greenway), and he closes on the ball very fast. He made two huge hits, on screen passes, both tackles for losses, and his stock has gone up maybe as high as late in the second round... about the time NE picks again. Havner is not very good in traffic though. He doesn't shed blocks and often gets out of position. He could just as easily fall to the second day.

Running Backs.. Look for the North to pass a lot. The backs aren't impressive. I think Jerome Harrison is the best of this bunch but not saying much.

Baskett is still struggling and looking weak. Like i said earlier, Moss is the best WR here. Looks like the South will utilize a RB out of the backfield a lot in their passing game.
Thanks jester. Wish I was there. Even if it isn't saying much, I like hearing Harrison is looking good. That guy gets no respect.Maybe you missed it, but I heard Baskett went off yesterday several times???

Just listened to an interview with Danieal Bullocks, SS, NEB from the SR Bowl (premium content on another site).Q: What players down here that you didn't know about/hadn't played against really stood out to you as guys who can play?A: Mike Bell, Chad Greenway & Clint Ingram

Really was hoping Michael Robinson would look better. He's such a great athlete and leader, but he needs alot of coaching at whatever position they decide. Hope some NFL team takes a chance on him.

Kiper mentioned that Kiwanuka got beaten by D. Brick in "what seemed like 97% of all drills"
I think Kiwi is out with a bad shoulder. I'm pretty sure he won't play. It happened battling Trueblood, his best friend, who threw him to the ground. I saw a good ten minutes of Hali, Kiwi, and Tapp going after D'Brick. Um, Ferguson is crazy good. Kiwi and Hali gave him trouble, but he never loses. It's pretty impressive to watch. Everyone should know Tapp dominated D'Brick this season, 2 sacks and 3 hurries. Well, Tapp got one sack on an inside swim/rip move. ESPN showed the highlight. Ferguson even facemasked Tapp as Tapp was sacking the QB. So, Tapp tries the same move in practice this week. Ferguson "bent" Tapp's body then drove him into the ground. It looked like it hurt. A commentator said, "Fool D'Brickashaw once, shame on him. Try to fool him twice... ouch."

When Mark May starts gushing about a Left Tackle, I think all the doubters can be disregarded.

Ferguson has one of the widest armspans I've every seen and he's quick enough that no one can get around him. As far as pass protection, I don't see how he's not at a Pro Bowl level within a year or two. I'm interested to see how his run blocking is but from what I've read about it people think he's above-average. It'll really be a shame if the Texans can't trade down and find a way to draft him since it would turn Carr's career around immediately.

Todd McShay from Scouts Inc. highlights:

Winston = late 1st/early 2nd, Johathan Scott = 3rd.
 Scott in the 3rd round is shocking to me. That would seem to be steal. Am I missing something?
There's two divergent school's of thought on these OTs. One believes they are all very talented and the first round will be packed with them (I have agreed with this most of the year, but I'm not so sure anymore). The other is that there is so much depth among comparable OTs that they will all fall a little due to supply and demand. They are also hard to scout and rank. A week of watching them practice hasn't settled anything. Scott Wright is wondering if jon Scott isn't the very best OT there. Another expert feels like Winston picked it up so much he looks as good as D'Brick. Colledge has been almost as unbeatable as D'Brick. McNeill's measureables are crazy. Ryan O'Callaghan wasn't looked at at LT, but he was just as dominant at RT against the same DEs as D'Brick. The only one who really struggled was Trueblood, but he's shown great potential and run blocks better than all of them. Latui is so athletic for his size many think he can play tackle, possibly LT, and be similar to Flozell Adams. Ryan Cook struggled at center early in the week, but he moved around to guard and tackle and was very good at every single position (even at center when moved back to the middle). I saw film of him completely dominating Tamba Hali. Nick Mangold was so tough at center many think he is ahead of Eslinger now.

This is the year to patch up weak OLs that is for sure.

I believe that both of those statements are true - the WRs are horrible in this draft, and the 2nd off the board could easily be in the 2nd round.

Personally I think at least two, and probably three WRs will be drafted in the first round but I don't see Hagan being one of them. Santonio Holmes, Demetrius Williams and either Jon Orr/Sinorice Moss would be my bets right now.

There really isn't a wide receiver to get excited about like the last few years, but the class is pretty deep, and there's lots of potential. I think it could end up being a very good class that just didn't grade very high. I could see no WRs taken in round one; I could see three. Chad Jackson says he's running sub 4.4 almost every time. That should get him into round one if he pulls it off.

Today's game is a big one for Hagans. He seems to be the type of player who plays better in game type situations. That being said he just dropped an easy one on the 1st drive.Reminds me of Eric Moulds the way he runs his routes.

Hagan had two more bad drops. I wish they would highlight these RBs a little more. Tapp has killed Winston and McNeill, but Scott has owned him. I think Tapp is not given enough credit for how good he is. Why are Hali and Kiwanuka better than him?

O'Callaghan is a fine offensive tackle. He just dominated his side of the field on that drive. D'Brick gave up a sack (to a mediocre player), but everything on the right was shut down or opened up for the run. He's a hoss.

He has stood out in my mind as well. He is a big guy and can dominate against the run. Do you think he's quick enough against smaller and faster DEs?

He was quick enough to dominate Pac 10 Ds from the LT spot, but he's done the right thing this week by accepting the move to the right. That's where he belongs in the NFL, and yes, I think he'll be good as a rookie. McNeill and Winston refused to be looked at on the right side. It may have been a mistake, because they don't look good today. Sheesh, the only LTs having strong games are Scott and Colledge. D'Brick is being crucified in some draftnik forums right now. Lawson and Anderson have both beat him twice and his run blocking is not at all impressive. Jerome Harrison is better than most think, I think.

Watch the feet. He'll be a nice mid-round pick

Anybody know where you can get the boxscore for this game? I missed it, but can't find a box score on any of the major sites (ESPN, Sportsline etc)

Watched and tivoed the game. Will watch every play again. My first comments...Hagan needs to learn how to catch. Why does he try to catch all balls with both hands underneath the ball? Didn't people teach him how to catch? Create the diamond and have your fingers pointed up or at worst to the sides to catch the ball. If he can correct that, he will be a good reciever. If not, he will be Dez White.Tapp destroyed Eric Winston (and McNeill once). He ran right past time once to the outside and once to the inside. Now either Tapp will move up the 1st and/or Winston will move down to the 2nd or 3rd.Cutler has the best quick release I have seen since Marino. He also showed nice touch, however, he showed he has a lot to learn as well. I would compare him to Boller but he should be better quicker.Moss is like his brother or Steve Smith. But we have seen that teams don't always know how to use such players. He could be a better route runner. He could be amazing.Harrison looked like Marshall Faulk with his dancing move.

Mort calling Cutler the #1 QB makes me laugh. Could be the dumbest statement I've heard in quite some time. Way to go ace. Whitehurst severely outplayed Cutler today. Not even close.Pathetic Senior Bowl Performance:Cutler was just 6-of-19 for 69 yards and was intercepted in the end zone by Cedric Griffin of Texas to end the game's opening drive.BTW: I'd move Dominique Byrd of Southern California up on the draft list. He looked great in practice and had a solid game (4 for 67).

Despite the drops, the ease with which Byrd got open downfield was impressive. I would rank him 3rd on my TE board right now behind Davis and Lewis. 2nd if you are looking for more of a 2 way TE behind Davis.

Despite the drops, the ease with which Byrd got open downfield was impressive. I would rank him 3rd on my TE board right now behind Davis and Lewis. 2nd if you are looking for more of a 2 way TE behind Davis.
Lewis hurt himself this week...and Kiper thinks Byrd [before the game] had moved into 1st round contention. Right now, I would rank them...V. Davis

L. Pope

D. Byrd

M. Lewis

Mort calling Cutler the #1 QB makes me laugh. Could be the dumbest statement I've heard in quite some time. Way to go ace.

Whitehurst severely outplayed Cutler today. Not even close.

Davis is the clear #1. The tough thing about ranking the next 3 is that they all bring different packages to the table. Depending on how you want to use the TE, I could see 3 different teams ranking each of them 2nd and not being wrong. Lewis is the best receiver and "big target" - he would be a great security blanket receiver in Chicago or Carolina. Pope has a great physical package, but is not as polished as a receiver as Lewis. Byrd has a good mix of receiving skills (especially downfield) and blocking.

Jason, I have real good reviews of Lewis first hand. I bet the 32 franchises will have about 10 different ways of ranking the top 7 TEs, which I currently rank like this.DavisLewisPopeByrdFasanoKlopfenstienThomasThat may not even be the top 7 on some boards. I do like Lewis better than Pope, and I heard rave reviews for him this week. LBs had no chance of covering him one on one. He was so impressive other NFL coaches asked Nolan to work him at WR. He still produced out there. He had to be double covered even by this talent in practice and still made plays in traffic that had many scouts murmering about him. This season he was frequently triple covered. His 40 is going to make or break his draft position, but I like him better than Pope. He's more of a playmaker, he's more fluid, and his strength is in his legs as opposed to Pope, whose strength is upper body. Lewis is a very willing blocker too. He works hard at it, and this criticism is probably more applicable to Pope and Davis who haven't done much blocking and supposedly need more work. I would agree they look like they could be better blockers, but Lewis is a lot better than the early season reports suggested. He even took on Hali one on one today, and he won. All the tight ends were left on an island in pass protection for one play in this game. Lewis and TJ Williams won, the others all got run over (especially Byrd and Mix). I recorded the game and just reviewed each play to focus on the OLs and this was something I started looking for when I noticed TEs blocking DEs by themselves.

Why is Sinorice Moss not getting more love in a weak WR class? I forgot he was even a senior -- God I hated watching him shred people while at UM.

I would love for the Bucs to get that guy.

I think he'll get plenty of love on draft day. He's been solid all week and had a nice game.

Agreed, I think a lot of us who want him on our favorite team were hoping he'd go unnoticed.

for those who missed it, replay on espn at midnight on west coast... not sure about other parts of the country...

By the way, D'Angelo was easily the best player on the field. Not even close.
If you're looking for someone who just looks like he belongs in the NFL (from watching this game), I would say DeAngelo has to top the list. He only had three carries and ran one screen pass, but he looks good every time he gets a chance. I cannot imagine him lasting more than ten picks like so many people think. Mike Nolan is in love with him. If the Jets and Packers pass, I think SF would take him for the same reasons Gruden took Cadillac-- it's love.

Quarterbacks:

There's Jay Cutler, then there's everybody else. The hype is real. He looked superb. None of the others looked like the next level is a reality. Whitehurst was decent, second best, but it was a huge gap from 1 to 2. Hackney, Shockley, Croyle and Robinson looked very bad. So bad he said it made it hard to scout the WRs. He emphasized that this was one short day of practice after the weigh ins, so nothing he saw is a finalized opinion, with this exception-- Michael Robinson should convert to WR tomorrow. He's sure of that.
interesting.Other eyewitness reports I read today had Culter showing a live arm but horrible accuracy.
Can he throw the ball from his knees on the 50 yard line through the uprights? This Cutler cat sounds VERY similar to Kyle Boller leading up to the draft.

I would have like to see DeAngelo run inside but he still impressed me on the screen pass. The thing I like most about him is his character. He seems like a class guy.

:goodposting: I'm from the camp that says that Nolan didn't give him more carries because he didn't want everyone to see just how good Williams is.

I thought I saw on ESPN's ticker yesterday that he was the game's MVP. Isn't he Santana Moss' little brother?

I have read or listened to four different interviews where either an SF coach or South team player singled out DeAngelo as the person who really stood out from a character/slash teammate issue. Apparently he's very smart and keeps everyone laughing. One story I heard was while at a team dinner everyone sitting around DeAngelo started cracking up. When asked what was so funny, no one would say. Later a UCLA player explained (otr) that DeAngelo said, "I love me some Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush." Someone asked why. He said, "Does anybody here really want to play for Houston or New Orleans? I love those guys!"

They took a massive three hour mini-wonderlic and one of the questions was: "Would you be comfortable being a librarian?" Well, this question became a running joke because every time some player would blow it in practice DeAngelo would ask him that question. :D

I think we have a new Chad Johnson coming into the league.

OK, which of these would be the best in FF terms? Is anyone of these the next Gonzo, Gates, or Shockey? Maybe this should have its own thread?

I don't think that question can be answered until training camp and some pre-season games. Certainly the draft will give us a better idea of how they will be used. Physically Davis is head and shoulders above them all (even though he's shorter), but probably a little more raw than Byrd and Lewis. The Bengals could wait for a TE and take Fasano or Tim Day and that could end up being the best fantasy producer.

Vernon Davis is a special prospect, he's the guy that, as long as he's put into a decent offensive system, would be the guy to target heads and tails above the others.
