Sequels that ruined a franchise... for you. (1 Viewer)

None.

I dont understand how a movie that came out after another can ruin the first one.  You can still always go back and watch the greatness of the first one.  Godfather 3 didnt make 1 or 2 any worse.  The upcoming Ghostbusters will not ruin the greatness of the original.  etc. etc.
If the sequel or prequel is generally as canon by creators or fans and changes and/or retcons the canon of the good films in the series, then yes, it can ruin the original works.

I just watched Highlander for the first time in 30 years with my 11 year old.  It turns out it blows.  Weird catchphrase dialogue, awful fight choreography, terrible effects, nonsensical story.  The only good things were the only guy with a real Scottish accent playing the only Spaniard in Scotland and Clancy Brown being a punk to non-Highlander characters.
yeah tried to get the kids to watch it, didn't really hold their attention. bit of a shame because it has some great quotable lines delivered well.  but even the queen soundtrack is a little over done.

That movie has so many great lines that even the worst sequel in the world (which Highlander II may be) will never make it not awesome.

~Nuns, no sense of humor.
Very true.

Hi I'm Candy.

Of course you are.

She's a real screamer!

I took his head and raped his woman before his blood was cold.

How does Speed 2 taking place on a cruise ship ever get past late night WTF spitballing amongst a bunch of studio interns...?

Toy Story 4

Thinking of boycotting on philosophical grounds but know I’ll end up seeing it.
I feel the exact same way. So mad that they had the perfect ending for the story and then decided to keep it going.

It's still probably going to be good, but it has to be great to justify it.

Worldwide Gross - $164M...Production Budget - $160M

...so when you factor in promotion and distribution costs, no.
Then yeah, heads shoulda rolled for that one.  Lots of terrible ideas turn into terrible movies that make money.

The guy with the brainstorm on that one should have been punched in the throat.

Full disclosure I have never seen the entire movie, but did see a few parts and did see when the boat crashed.  Wow is all I could think.

The boat crashes?  Thanks for the spoiler tag guy.

Nah, it doesn't need to be any good to justify it, just needs to make a boatload of cash. Which it will.

Loved the first one. Don't think I've ever seen 2. Is this something I should avoid like the plague?
No.  Watching the occasional atrocious movie allows you to appreciate the good movies a bit more IMO.

Not the bad movies that try to be bad.  The movies that really tried to be good and just blow.  THOSE are the ones that make you appreciate the good ones more.

Yeah it’s so bad. Keanu was smart to refuse to do it. Not sure why Bullock agreed to it. It’s on HBO Max now if you want to just laugh at a horrible movie.

I don't plan on seeing it, but keep hearing how bad it is but no context to it.  What made it so terrible?
just saw it- wasn't THAT terrible-  is was exactly  what is was meant to be- a big bombastic popcorn movie..   a little bit James Bond and Indiana Jones vibe wrapped around the original Jurassic Park narrative.  fun movie, just don't over think it

TV series The Fall, starring Gillian Anderson, was pretty great through S1 & 2, and then S3 happened. That's the only thing I can think of where I completely lost interest in the original as a result. Matrix and Highlander- I still love the 1st installments and just purge the others from my consciousness. But somehow with Fall, S3 washed away the previous two instead.

This doesn't need to be about sequels that killed franchises. This is just about movies that ended your love of a franchise. Maybe even to the point where you dislike the movies that came before, not just those that followed.

I submit to you, Highlander 2: The Quickening. I watched this garbage in theaters. I still have no idea what I saw. To date, it is the last time I have viewed any Highlander movie, including the first. Plot summary taken from Wikipedia:
I am angry that I wasted a couple minutes reading that crap, yet grateful you saved me from accidentally watching it.

I am not sure if they have been mentioned or count. I don't consider either a franchise nor do they even register enough with me to ruin the original but:

The sequel to Chinatown, The Two Jakes is garbage.

The Sequel to The Last Picture Show, Texasville is basura.

Those are certainly the most unnecessary sequels ever made.

this post just made me remember that somebody had the audacity to remake Wings of Desire into a disaster with Nick Cage and Meg Ryan (City of Angels). not a sequel and Wings of Desire is still probably my favorite movie on a given day, so the remake didn't affect my love of the original... but #### that noise.

Yes, I tend to hate remakes more than sequels. Probably because they have the audacity to use the original title.
