Sesame Place racism scandal (2 Viewers)

We have come a long way in this country.

People are so starved for racism that this clip that's all of five out of context seconds showing the first bilingual sesame street character is what gets everybody up in arms.

Greatest country in the world.
I think the claims of racism with this are nutso. I don't know who's up in arms about this but I'm not.

Maybe y'all stop calling me a leftist now. I just call all things as I see them. And this one... Tis bananas
I think this is a perfect example of what's going on in general - yes, there are still people who are racist, but it's not everywhere and most of the time I would guess it's a misunderstanding or there is a simpler and more likely explanation.

BUT - as we see, it doesn't matter how you vote, just about everybody seem to give them what they want by clicking on and overreacting to things like this.
There’s a $25M lawsuit and a company is changing how they do business as a result of this. I don’t think it’s possible to overreact to how stupid this is…and this is not an isolated incident.

Are reactions only allowable if someone is physically harmed. Does it need to be at least a few hundred people?
I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but in this country you can pretty much sue anyone for anything at anytime. Doesn't mean you'll win. It does mean plenty of junk cases waste the time of the courts, and cost people money litigating things that are just ridiculous. However, it also means that everyone has a voice in justice. So, kinda mixed feels on the setup we have.

This case is a travesty. No other way to put it.

The woke mob is a mob, my favorite characterization of them is "modern day torches and pitchforks". Mobs do not dispense justice in an equitable manner, which is why we have courts, laws, and enforcement. Kinda sad Sesame Place rolled over on this, but I guess they feared that mob, and rightfully so, we've seen it bring down many people and companies, often times it was deserved but plenty of times it wasn't. Regardless of party, people need to start refusing to be okay with mob justice. Simply put, it's bad for us, and we have a far superior way of dispensing justice. That far superior method has flaws, but it's still about 1000x better than an emotional mob out to destroy.

We disagree on the # of people who think like this. We don't disagree that this small # can have big effects.
Yep I’m not even sure we disagree much on the number of people. 15-20%?
To me that seems really high.
A majority of democrats believe that

I dunno, when nearly half of “liberals” think at least 1,000 unarmed black men are killed per year…not hard to think the majority of them wouldn’t also think sesame place was being racist.

Don’t ask me to find the study lol, I posted it previously in discussions we had…should be google findable

But isn't that the problem? If normal activity is continually assumed to be racism, this misconception of racism continues into perpetuity. And we have the left continuing to sell this narrative every chance they get. The left continues to sell the big lie of institutionalized racism, but there is none.

It continues into perpetuity because it's one of the best grifting games in town. Not only can you make yourself rich by claiming Racist Boogeyman Around Every CornerTM, but you get virtues, celebrity and power.

Money and Power - that is ALWAYS the goal. Don't be fooled.
Similar to how you can be charged with assault outside of an abortion clinic, exaggerate your arrest and proclaim your victimhood to the right wing press and then raise over $300K in a single week.

Both are clear grifts. I don't know who these people are that are so willing to give their money to these people.
Weren't you just playing thread cop wanting people to keep threads on topic.
Political grift seems on topic.

ETA: and the only reason I was, was to keep your bonkers trans-rants out of that thread. Please do not take this as an invitation to spout that nonsense in here either.

The only thing that is bonkers is you taking it out on me when it was your side bring in outside topics.
Well and blindly trusting prosecutors and fbi as the arbitrators of truth.
LOL. We can't just take the W when somebody from the other "team" agrees on a topic, can we.

must. hate. other. side.
Reminder: I do not belong to a side or team. Thanks.
Wasn't saying you do, I was commenting on Jon's usual pov that everyone seems to be on a team.
I am not a team player unless you consider freedom and equality a team. My problem with the left is that a large part of their agenda is anti-freedom particularly when it comes to speech and economics and are very racist in their solutions. I am very much an anti-authoritarian extremist when it comes to speech.

You know Jon, if you took things issue by issue, person by person, you'd have a much more nuanced and accurate view of the world. Just my opinion, but I think it would be helpful for you to stop grouping everything and using words like "never", "always" and similar.

You don't need to, Jon. Just posting "the left does X" is doing basically the same thing.

Maybe this isn’t fair of me, but suing for $25M kind of makes me question how valid her initial claim was. $25M is ridiculous and definitely comes across as a cash grab.

It is fair of you to let this additional context color your opinion of the incident. How could it not be?

the larger problem is that these overreactions—insane lawsuits, Twitter mob canceling efforts, boycotts, etc— is that eventually the reaction it receives goes in the direction of "well then no one can have it" and everyone loses.

Movements like these eventually eat themselves and you can't out-woke woke.

Look at what this incident did for the thousands of other guests at SP and SS as a whole. All traces of the character were removed, parade characters are now only seen on floats away from the guests, revenue-generating restaurants are closed b/c they contain a likeness to the character, etc. This is SP's solution to remove any other possibility of anyone even thinking of dragging them through this again.
But do we forget that, lets say even if the act in question was racist based....that there is a flippin' person inside a fabric costume???!!! For pete's sake the actual cartoon character is not racist!!!

I swear we are heading toward a future where all of our entertainment is vetted and approved, we will be wearing solid color jumpsuits so as not to offend anyone with fashion, and we will all be reading from the same pre-approved list of books all because people were too simple to move past the BS

The interesting thing is the two teams hate each other, but are each contributing to this issue bigly.

But also, especially with SS, this isn't new. We can't forget the "Burt and Ernie are gay" panic...

Gotta save the kids!

There is also a boy who cried wolf effect. These instances of bogus racist allegations have become so common that it discredits and causes skepticism around real instances of racism. Here is a funny example that I read yesterday:

I think Woke is having a prolonged moment of influence but it's a trend that's destined to dissipate. I often read about people who once considered themselves woke or SJW but have since changed their minds due to experiences. I don't think I ever read about people changing their minds in the opposite direction.

Suing at all should make anybody question it. I mean who even thinks of suing for their kid getting passed by at a parade?

Because today's leftist ideology is the worst. This wokist crap is the most anti-american bigotted narcissistic non-sense every dreamt up by the neo-Marxist. The fact the the Drmocrats get lead around by the nose by such idiocy is very telling. As long as wokism is holding this country hostage, I am going to criticize the left for it. At least some European countries are finally standing up to this evil is a great sign as it is usually a leading indicator of how our elections will go

You bring up a good point, and it happens with a lot of stuff now. When everything is racism, nothing is. See: examples of CRT, grooming, etc.. Each side has these pet issues that they extremes of the party hurting the cause for.

But also, especially with SS, this isn't new. We can't forget the "Burt and Ernie are gay" panic...

Gotta save the kids!
But Bert and ERnie are still around and central figures. IDK when but back in the day stuff like that would blow over and the mob would find something new to be outraged over. But now, even the hint of an issue and everything gets taken down and labeled lepper status immediately.

More SM power now.
