Shanahan is going to San Diego. (1 Viewer)

I've been giving a lot of thought to where Shanahan is going to wind up next year and after watching MNF tonight I'm convinced it's going to be San Diego. Norv Turner is gone after this year, no doubt in my mind. There will be no playoffs for them. Right now their locker room smells like Ben-Gay and desperation.

Enter Shanahan.

Why San Diego you ask, when he will have a choice of up to 8 teams that will be looking for a new HC?

4 Words:

Al Davis

Pat Bowlen

That's 4 guaranteed games a season that he gets a chance to stick it to the two guys who fired him.

San Diego is a decent team to take over, they have a QB a WR a TE and some defensive weapons. Let him loose on finding a RB or RB's of the future, which he loves to do, and you're right back in the mix. He knows how to build a team and with a reinvigorated sense of purpose, namely revenge, he could have SD in the thick of things next year.

Book it!

Are they going to fire the Chargers GM? Shanahan isn't going anywhere unless he has complete control.
 I actually could see some situations where he doesn't have complete control, but being a coach under AJ Smith isn't one of them.

There's a huge difference between Al Davis and Pat Bowlen. Shanahan loathes Al Davis (who still owes Shanahan money from his coaching contract, but refuses to pay it because Shanny went to the hated Broncos, and because Al Davis believes that he plays by his own set of rules). Despite the fact that Bowlen let Shanny go, Shanny still really likes/admires/respects Pat Bowlen (and Bowlen feels the same way about Shanahan). And, as others have mentioned, no way in hell Shanahan goes somewhere where A.J. Smith is his general manager. Shanny will have his pick of jobs, and there will be other jobs out there that will be willing to pay more, and there will be other jobs out there where he likes the situation/talent better, and there will be other jobs out there where he doesn't have to coach against Pat Bowlen's team twice a year. I'd imagine Dallas might be an attractive destination (if Jerry is willing to give Shanahan the same level of respect he gave Parcells and stop meddling). Carolina might be an attractive destination. If Chicago fires Lovie, I could see Shanahan being eager to reunite with Cutler. If Tennessee fires Jeff Fisher (don't know if Bud Grant is seriously considering it or not) I could see Shanahan wanting the chance to work with such a stable and supportive owner. San Diego? I don't see it.

dallas.carolina.jacksonville.buffalo.chicago.just a few of the places Shanny might wind up.

I disagree with the thought that Shanny will want "total" control.....it was pretty well known and pretty evident to everyone, including Shanny, towards the end of his stint in Denver, that Shanny struggled with the GM type duties.....it was not his strength......I think he realizes that and will accept more of a head coach only type role if the situation is right....

If SD doesn't make the playoffs, couldn't A.J. Smith be in trouble as well?
he should be.
Why?
the list is getting longer1 - Letting Brees and Turner walk for nothing more than comp picks2 - horrible handling of the Marty situation3 - His drafting is getting worse, last 3 have not been pretty IMO4 - failure to do anything in FA, now this might be handed down from above who knows but this team has lacked OL and DL depth for a couple years and he hasnt addressed it through the draft or FA5 - He hired Norv, while the chargers have had better playoff success under him than Marty, Norvs team take on his persona, slow starting lookin ill-prepared and then have to fight like heck to eek out wins.

I thought some of those things happened under John Butler (1a, 2, 5) but if not, then I understand. Though his drafts have been pretty good IMO.

Nope Butlers been gone for along time (RIP). AJ is responsible for all 5 points.

Shanny is going to end up in Dallas--I would almost guarantee it. (but then again, I have been wrong about almost everything this year when it comes to football :lmao: )

AJ deserves grief for allowing that offensive line to fall apart. Back in 2006, Olivea, hardwick, goff, mcneill, dielman was an imposing line that opened up holes for LT.

I understand injuries happen, but Smith needed to have some depth on his o-line. They cant move anyone now

The list above is great, especially marty dumping.

letting M Turner go was a mistake, and now Gartrell earlier this year. Gartell was a 4th rounder, with some thump to him. Theres no goalline back there if LT is hurt, and he is not a thumper

I see Shanahan going to chicago. just a gut feeling there. Reuniting with cutty

 And I have to agree. Jones and Shannahan are very good friends and Jones needs his team to be as good as his baby... er stadium. I think you'll see Shannahan with more control than most Cowboys coaches have had in the past, but not as much as he would want elsewhere.

No way to Buffalo. Ralph Wilson won't shell out the money to get a serious coach.

I agree, Denver's front office was TERRIBLE at the end of Shanahan's stint, and it was glaringly obvious to absolutely everyone who observed the team. Do you know who he wasted his last 20 picks on? Jay Cutler, Tony Scheffler, Brandon Marshall, Elvis Dumervil, Domenik Hixon, Chris Kuper, Ryan Harris, Marcus Thomas, Ryan Clady, Eddie Royal, Kory Lichtensteiger, Jack Williams, Spencer Larson, and Peyton Hillis. 20 draft picks and he only managed to find one franchise QB, one franchise LT, one of the best receiving TEs in the game, a pro bowl WR, a second potential pro bowl WR, at least two more quality O-line starters, and the best pass rusher in the entire NFL? And don't get me started on the '05 draft, where Denver had 6 picks (none in the first round), and only managed to walk away with two starting CBs and a starting guard. Imagine what Denver could have done if they'd only had someone who could actually evaluate talent making their draft picks. :tinfoilhat:Sarcasm aside... from 1995-1999, Denver was one of the best drafting teams in the entire NFL, and hit on everything in free agency. From 2000-2004, Denver's failures were equaled only by the Browns and the Lions. The only players remaining from those drafts are Ben Hamilton and D.J. Williams. From 2005 to 2008, though, Denver was far and away the best drafting team in the entire NFL again. Given the other evidence, it's looking more and more like 2000-2004 were just a fluke rather than a true indictment of Shanahan's front office acumen. Shanahan's real achilles heel was his inability to find/retain any sort of continuity on defense.
