PITTSBURGH — Wide receiver Shaun McDonald, punter Dirk Johnson and cornerback Keiwan Ratliff were among five free agents who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the start of their minicamp today.

McDonald was a fourth-round pick by the Rams in 2003 before signing with the Lions in 2007. He led Detroit with 79 catches for 943 yards and six touchdowns that season and had 35 catches and one touchdown last season.

Ratliff was a second-round pick by the Bengals in 2004 before spending part of the 2007 and 2008 seasons with the Colts.

Cedrick Wilson part deux. Like Santonio leapfrogged him right away, Sweed will also leapfrog McDonald. He's a good addition to the Pitt WR corps for depth, but no more relevant than Sweed was last year, or Cedrick before him. If the starting WRs are doing well to get 80+ catches, the #3 may get enough to hit it big on a bye week filler (like N.Washington last year), but the #3b or #4 won't have any fantasy relevance.

I'd expect McDonald and Sweed to be in very different roles. McDonald in the slot, Sweed to stretch the field. The Steelers use 3-wide on the majority of their plays so I'd expect both players to get some PT. Fantasy relevance, not much, although Sweed could be a nice redzone target.

Should be in the mix with Wallace for #4/5 WR duties.

His signing probably keeps Dallas Baker/Martin Nance as PS types.

I like the signing. Vetern depth is nice since Sweed hasn't looked too good in his rookie season. We are 1 injury away from looking very weak at the WR position.
