Browns Pro Bowl defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is so disgruntled with new coach Eric Mangini and the new regime that he's asked the team not to pay his guaranteed $6 million option bonus next month, nfl.com's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday night.

Schefter, according to a source close to Rogers, said the tackle would rather be released after only one season even though he's owed $15 million in guaranteed money. However, he hasn't asked yet to be released, the Browns told nfl.com.

Rogers is reportedly miffed about two off-season incidents in which he feels Mangini snubbed him. The first time, Mangini walked into the Browns' training room and didn't say hello to Rogers, the source said. The second time, Mangini and Rogers were together in the media room at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards on Jan. 23 and neither acknowledged the other.

Mangini said at a news conference Feb. 4: "I didn't even realize Shaun was there at the time. I know that's probably hard to believe considering how big he is and how big I am. It's like two destroyers missing each other."

Mangini recently reached out to Rogers, according to the report. And a source within the Browns organization told Schefter that Mangini is still optimistic he can sway Rogers once they speak. But sources close to Rogers say he won't change his mind.

The report says some believe there are other reasons why Rogers wants to leave the Browns, but didn't specify.

Awww, Rogers's feelings were hurt? Awww... boo hoo... what a pansy.Or perhaps he sees what Haynesworth is about to get and he thinks he'll cash in even more than his current contract?

Rogers better watch out...in Cleveland, a bruised ego can turn into a Staph infection in about an hour.

Rogers had a great year one in Cleveland, there is no doubt about that. However, that being said the Browns would be wise to let him walk. An unmotivated(or read..unhappy) Rogers is a fat tub of goo wasting space waiting to happen. Word has probably gotten to Shaun that Mangini is tough on players and expects them to work hard all the time.

I'd hazard a guess that if he doesn't get released or traded the only time we'll read the words 'hard' and 'work' in a sentence involving Rogers will be "The young workers at Pizza Hut had to WORK extra HARD to keep the pizza buffet filled as injured(hammy,calf,ankle...you choose) Cleveland DT Shaun Rogers stopped in for lunch."

Exactly. There was a reason the Lions were :D to ship him out of town, albeit for far too little in return.

Wow. As soon as Cleveland gets a good DEF Player he wants to go. Good job Brownies. Atleast you have a aerial assault offense

I can certainly understand the criticisms based on the way this Rogers situation has been portrayed. But I have to say that if there's truth to the fact he's willing to forgo a $6mm bonus and another $9mm in guarantees, that's a MOTIVATED guy right there. How many players wouldn't take the money and then gripe or pout and hope the team traded/released them?

If Rogers being snubbed is the only reason, then we should just forget about this b/c there is no way he is going to be released. I'm wondering if there is more to the story. No way browns release him outright b/c they would get nothing in return and take a near 10million cap hit. I'd let him sit and rot before cutting him outright.

If Rogers can't accept an apology to earn millions of dollars, then there is definitely something else going on.Most stupid people run towards the prospect of easy money.

Boy does this sound like Pete Kendall all over again to me:

1) Agree to a deal.

2) Agent calls and say's WHOA did you see the new market for your position

3) LIE and Do anything you can to get released

and 4) make sure you get the media and Florio at PFT on your side killing the team, coach and GM at all opportunity

Throw him in the rookie doorms Eric!!!!

Maybe we will ship him back to Detroit. Put his whinning ### right back where it belongs. You step on a Dawg you suffer dude. 15 million or not we are gonna run your butt out if you don;t straighten up your attitude fast! We don't tolerate whinners in the Dawg Pound! It's hard enough putting up with losers but whinning your ### out is a no no! :goodposting:

a combination of these two wouldn't suprise me.Romeo held Rogers out of a lot of practices for ambiguous injuries, or simply to "rest"if he feels he's going to have to work his tail off, AND be underpaid, that is not a good combo.

:unsure:We know. It's become apparent that the Dawg Pound only tolerates loossers.
we don;t tolerate losers either. Just ask Savage, and Crennell for a start. Everything that could have went bad last year did. It wasn;t Rodgers fault! He was probably the brightest spot on the team. But still he's paid to be a leader. Not a whinner! Let him go rub off on another loseing team for all I care. His winning habits speak for thereselves!

A lot of bright guys run there too, and laugh all the way to the bank.

He didn't say "Hi" to him? Really? That's the complaint?
Isn't this why Taylor was so sad about working for Parcells before last year? He was snubbed too... I hope everyone saw that as ridiculous and transparent as well, it wasn't that long ago and was with a higher profile guy.

any chance that he's playing the pouting game in hopes of getting cut and then cashing in on some of these crazy contracts about to go down? Just a thought...

There's something else going on here:

Rogers, who capped off his season by making the Pro Bowl, is also upset about a larger issue, the nature of which is unknown. But most of it boils down to a lack of communication, sources said.Rogers' concerns are very serious and not something that's been blown out of proportion, those close to him said. If the matter is not resolved to his satisfaction, he probably will ask to be traded or released.
Whatever the problem is, the Browns management needs to FIX IT RIGHT NOW. This guy is a top 3 DT in the NFL.Damn it Mangini + Kokinis, we do NOT want to be hearing stuff like this out of Berea this early in the offseason. Learn something from the previous failed regime. Stop screwing around!

 If they eff this up, the fans might call for their heads before they play their first game.

Unfortunately for Browns' fans, they are a failed regime. Or atleast Mangini is. Im still shocked at how quickly they brought that guy in. Especially right now, with Gruden, Shanahan, Billick, Fassel and other far better head coaches standing around doing nothing. Maybe the brass should just fire the HC and call "do over". Id like to say its nothing personal, but obviously I dont have alot of love for Eric Mangini. Rogers might just not want to play for a rat.

There has to be more than just not saying hi. Even though Rogers is immature, Mangini is a tool and probably deserves a lot more of the blame than people are putting on him in this thread.

I don't think I'd go that far. He might be when he's motivated and giving 100% effort, but that doesn't really happen consistently enough for him to be considered one of the top 3 DTs in the league, in my opinion.

He's young and already a has-been with his coach of the year a couple years back. My browns fans friends tell me there's a bunch of people questionning his hiring and it's nowhere near as rosy as it should be with a new regime.Crennel was a Pats DC and Savage was either GM or player personnel with the Ravens. It's a bit odd that Mangini is a former DC for the Pats and Kokinis is a former personnel director for the Ravens. Was that such a succcessful formula that they should continue?

According to http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index...ryID%3d3935114:

Rogers presents problem for Browns

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 | Print Entry

The Browns definitely have a problem with defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. Through his agent, he informed the Browns he doesn't want the $5 million in roster and option bonuses to stay in Cleveland. He wants out. According to a source, Rogers wanted to have a sit-down with head coach Eric Mangini but was told Mangini would meet with the team as a whole March 16 when the offseason program begins. There would be no individual meetings. The team controls the option, so if it pays the money, he will remain a Brown. Rogers signed a five-year, $37.8 million extension last season.

So it looks like Mangini isn't doing 1 on 1 talks right now. You know, this is one person as a fan I don't want to piss off. Mangini better start kissing some butt or Shaun Smith is our starting NT again this year. Instead of teams triple teaming him like Rogers, they will brush him off with 1 player hanging the LB's out to dry again. Oh how it sucks to be a Browns fan.

I guess the 1 on 1 refusal Rodgers requested makes a little more since from both ends then pevious reports of wanting out because his coach didn't recongize him. I can see Mangini not wanting to play favorites right off or putting 1 person above the others because who he is. I would do the same. He is well known for being a hard nosed son of a gun though and perhaps Rodgers wants out because of that.

Mangini style didnt really work in N.Y. with all them prized free agents. It worked rebuilding though the first year. It smells like it will either be boom or bust in Cleveland!

Maybe they are better off without Rodgers afterall!

Time will tell. If Rodgers don't want to be there trade him!

I call it a stalemate at this time. Mangini might just be what they need. With or without Rodgers. Let them rebuild thru draft for all I care. Can't get any worst then it was second half of last year!

All I can say is WTF. I don't know who to side with. On one hand, the Browns better be doing everything in their freaking power to keep our only pro bowl defensive player happy. On the other hand, grow up Shaun Rogers.

Weight mandate among issues prompting Shaun Rogers to ask Cleveland Browns to release him

CLEVELAND -- Pro Bowl nose tackle Shaun Rogers has formally asked to be traded or released by the Browns and isn't likely to change his mind, a source close to Rogers said.

Browns coach Eric Mangini has been trying to call the disgruntled tackle, but it's not yet known if the two have talked. Chances are, it wouldn't do much good anyway.

Rogers is miffed not just about being snubbed by Mangini on two occasions, but also by a directive he received from an unknown club official regarding the offseason weight program.

Despite playing all last season at his required weight -- which was listed at 350 -- Rogers was told by the Browns not to bother showing up for the offseason program on March 16th unless he was at a prescribed weight.

The mandate angered Rogers because he was in compliance with his weight all last season. What's more, he played on a sore knee much of the year and with a sore shoulder for most of the second half. He left one game with a neck stinger and returned, never missing any time because of the injuries.

Rogers came to Cleveland with a reputation for his weight ballooning in the second half of seasons, especially in 2007 when it was said that he ran out of gas. That never happened here. In fact, Rogers played some of his best ball down the stretch in 2008, despite the fact the Browns were out of the playoff hunt and in disarray.

Rogers is also upset that the team failed to reach out to him even after they knew he was miffed about the snubs and the weight issue. The club knew that there was a sense of urgency on Rogers' part, but failed to respond until he asked to be released.

Only now is Mangini trying to contact Rogers, and it may very well be too late.

Rogers' agent, Kennard McGuire, made it clear on Wednesday that Rogers' issues have nothing to do with money or his contract. In fact, he'd rather be released than earn the $15 million he's still owed, including a $6 million option bonus due next month.

The unfortunate part -- for Rogers and the Browns -- is that Rogers was rejuvenated in Cleveland and had a Pro Bowl season after virtually being run out of Detroit, where he was viewed as lazy and underacheiving. Rogers also rehabilitated his public image here. He was the best player the Browns had on defense last season and the cornerstone of the 3-4 defense.

It appears now that Rogers would rather play elsewhere than deal with the new regime. For his part, Mangini has said he values Rogers highly, wants him on the team and never meant to snub or disrespect him. It's not known if the weight mandate came from Mangini or someone else.

This behavior by Mangini shows something about his character

I really don't understand the rush by the Brownies to hire him so fast

I still say it's ALL about money with the player and agent grasping at any "excuse"...I'd bet the Browns draft Raji if Rogers goes.. Mangini's worst nightmare should be trying to run a 3-4 defense without an anchor again.

Why?Seriously, it's Shaun Rogers. He goes all out only when he feels like it, and it these reports are accurate, he's high maintenance to boot. This is someone who you want to keep around and build your defense around? Can you imagine the Steelers, Colts, or Patriots running their team with this mindset? Of course not.

He's a fine player - again, when he wants to be - but I would have this guy on a very, very short leash.

For everyone bashing Rogers here:The first time Eric snubbed him was in the training room. That means Rogers was at the facility doing work or getting worked on barely 2 months into the offseason.

The second time Mangini snubbed him was at a charity event.

The 3rd time Mangini snubbed him was after he had already lied ("I didn't see Shaun Rogers" - yeah right, there are tons of 360+ lb men at charity events) and while Rogers was trying to be the bigger man and requested a one-on-one meeting with Mangini to try and work out their differences.

That is Rogers 3, Mangini 0 in my book.
