Just reported on local Triple-X radio in DC; no link yet.

This is a weeks-long injury at best, and probably worse. This was probably the impetus behind the Taylor Jacobs for Mike Rumph trade.

Further edited to more accurately reflect "procedure" info; the exact nature of the injury is not yet reported.

Sounds suspiciously like a sports hernia to me.

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins starting cornerback Shawn Springs underwent surgery to repair a minor abdominal muscle tear on Tuesday and will be sidelined three to four weeks.

The procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers at Durham Regional Hospital.

The Redskins hope that Springs will be able to return for the regular season opener on Sept. 11 against Minnesota.

Washington acquired cornerback Mike Rumph from the San Francisco 49ers on Monday for wide receiver Taylor Jacobs.

Springs, 31, was signed as a free agent by Washington in March 2004 after cornerback Champ Bailey was traded to Denver for running back Clinton Portis.

A first-round pick in 1997, Springs played his first seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Redskins | Springs injury update

(KFFL) Updating previous reports, ESPNews reports Washington Redskins CB Shawn Springs (abdominal) could now miss up to six weeks of action due to abdominal surgery.

Washington Post

Washington Redskins left cornerback Shawn Springs will miss three to six weeks after undergoing surgery Tuesday to repair a torn abdominal muscle, giving the team two significant injury concerns to the starting lineup with less than a month before the season opener.

The surgery took place in Durham, N.C. and was performed by William Meyers, a top surgeon in the field of sports hernias who handled Donovan McNabb's surgery last season.

The news on Springs came a day after Redskins running back Clinton Portis was diagnosed with a partially dislocated left shoulder and will miss the remainder of the preseason.

Neither player is a certainty for the Sept. 11 opener against Minnesota at FedEx Field. The injury to Springs -- which was explained as a minor tear in the abdominal muscle that attaches to the pubic bone -- underscores both the increasing concern for depth as well as further explains the timing of the Redskins Monday night trade of wide receiver Taylor Jacobs to San Francisco for cornerback Mike Rumph.

The injury is an old one for Springs, 31, who had not missed a day in practice. He played in both the Aug. 6 scrimmage against Baltimore and Sunday in the preseason opener in Cincinnati. But despite having a perfect attendance record, he underwent an MRI on his groin area last week, which revealed enough of an injury for the Redskins to enter the trade market.

The Redskins traded disappointing fourth-year wide receiver Taylor Jacobs to the San Francisco 49ers last night for cornerback Mike Rumph. The trade addresses two immediate concerns for the Redskins: depth and injuries at cornerback. The Redskins signed defensive back Kenny Wright in the offseason, but Wright was fooled on a 52-yard flea flicker to T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the second quarter on Sunday in Cincinnati and was beaten by Chris Henry on a fade pattern for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

Veteran cornerback Shawn Springs, who started against the Bengals, saw a leg specialist yesterday to examine his sore pelvic area, which hampered him during the final month of the 2005 season and caused him to miss the Redskins' first playoff game against Tampa Bay. Cornerback Ade Jimoh missed Sunday's game in Cincinnati with a sternum injury.

Rumph, 26, a 2002 first-round draft pick from Miami, has been beset by injuries and has played just five games over the past two seasons. A torn foot muscle forced him to miss 13 games in 2005. "We talked to our guys, and a number have been around him," Coach Joe Gibbs said. "The guys said we were really going to like him." Rumph, who missed four tackles in the 49ers' 28-14 win over the Chicago Bears on Friday night, has played safety and cornerback; Gibbs said Rumph will be used as a corner.

The trade closes a chapter on Jacobs, 25, for whom the Redskins carried high expectations but received low results. Jacobs was often injured and, when he had an opportunity last season after James Thrash and David Patten were hurt, he did not produce. With the offseason additions of Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd, Jacobs was sinking on the depth chart, and instead of showing the Redskins' coaches what he could do in live action on Sunday, Jacobs sat on the sideline with a hip flexor. "I had a great talk today with Taylor," Gibbs said. "Nobody could think any higher of a player than we think of Taylor. He's a great guy, with a great work ethic and I told him I hope he does great out there."

They're being vague about where the injury is, but the official estimate about his return is 3-6 weeks, which means he could miss 0-2 regular season games. From Redskins.com:

Springs Could Miss 3-6 WeeksBy Gary FitzgeraldRedskins.com August 15, 2006 Cornerback Shawn Springs could be sidelined 3-6 weeks after undergoing a medical procedure to repair a minor tear in his abdominal muscle. Shawn Springs (Don Wright Photo) It is hoped that Springs will be fully healthy by the start of the regular season, on Sept. 11, against the Minnesota Vikings. Describing the medical procedure, head coach Joe Gibbs said: "It's fairly simple process, it's the same one that John Hall had last offseason, so they decided that it was best for Shawn and for us to go ahead and get that repaired. "I talked to the doctor this morning, and the best guess is that it'd be 3-6 weeks and it just depends on how he's going to return from that." Springs was not at Tuesday afternoon's practice. The 10-year veteran participated in training camp practices and he played in last Sunday's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Springs logged a sack on a cornerback blitz on Bengals' QB Anthony Wright. Springs has been mostly durable in his NFL career, playing in 123 of 144 games. As a Redskin, he has played in 15 games each of the last two years, although he did sit out one of the team's playoff games due to a groin injury. Asked if the injury was related to the groin injury last season, Gibbs said: "We don't think so. It's in the same general area so I don't guess you ever know on something like that. He came back this year, looked great and felt great. "It wasn't something we had to do, but we felt like the best option for Shawn and for us was to go ahead and repair it now to make sure something didn't happen later in the year to make it worse." Meantime, the Redskins signed fifth-year defensive back Mike Rumph on Monday, adding to the team's depth in the secondary. Eight-year veteran Kenny Wright was added in the offseason. With Springs sidelined, the Redskins will continue to take a close look at some of the young cornerbacks on the roster, including Christian Morton, Dimitri Patterson, Chris Hawkins and John Eubanks.

I could see them sitting him for Minnesota if he's not 100% because they'll need him as healthy as possible for Dallas.

Injuries in the middle of of the body seem like they have a tendency to linger, so I agree that they'll sit him as long as they feel they need to to ensure his long term health. Remember, he not only needs to be cleared to play in order to play, he needs to have practiced for at least a few days to get his reps and show his conditioning is there.
