Check out the play against Peyton Manning at around 1:18

It's amazing when guys this big move that fast. If there were odds on leading the league in sacks, I'd have to put him right up there at the top.

Well crap. I'm in two IDP redrafts and we've discussed Merriman a few times. I love him despite the 3-4 OLB production knock. I've been very willing to reach for him if necessary. Get this. The serpentine redraft (other is an auction), went like this.Bulluck late 5thVilma mid 6thPeterson late 6thUrlacher early 7thEdwards mid 7thLewis mid 7thZThomas mid 7thTatupu early 8thADavis early 8thMERRIMAN early 8th10th LB off the board, and I'm just stunned. The word's out on this guy. I have a few LBs ranked higher than him (LB16) and I am very high on him. The thing I was hoping for though was a 13th or 14th rounder with value. I think there's been too much hype.

nice ring to it... sounds like a fox worlds most dangerous videos title

few players in the league could you say they have a chance to get 15-20 sacks... LT & derrick thomas are two of better sack artist LBs i've ever seen & he could better their season sack bests...

* one of the best bull rushes in the league... i'd think he is unblockable for RBs in blitz pickup...

Did anyone notice that Merriman was in on first and second downs buton 3rd downs they would take him out! . Isn't he there best pass rusher so why take him out on third...

For who? Who was in instead?
I don't think it'd matter. They were likely giving Merriman some time off while taking a look at others (or another) in the same situation. I wouldn't read too much into this. No way you take this guy out on passing downs.

It wasn't all that unusual for Merriman to come out on third and long last year. He still got ten sacks.

The Chargers use Shaun Phillips in passing situations. Either Foley or Merriman comes out.

Thats stupid taking out your best guy on third downs.... So your saying Philips they consider to be a better pass rusher.... So does this mean that Merriman is a 2 down backer

anyone else have input on this.....
He's by far the best defensive player on the team and they will have him on the field as much as possible. Teams always mix it up in preseason. Don't look too much into it. He's a stud and that should transfer over to his FF-numbers.

The guy who will definitely be on the field in third and long is Shaun Phillips. Last year, either Merriman or Foley came out. There may have been some concerns about Merriman in pass coverage as a rookie. He looked pretty good in coverage against the Seahawks, though.

The thing about Merriman is he is a big enough man that they can put him anywhere in that front 6 and he can rush the passer. Anywhere on the DL or either OLB spot - if the job is to rush the passer - Merriman can do it.

Agreed, which also means that the offense must account for him. That's at leats one more blocker assigned to his side of the field who would otherwise be running a passing route. I have a feeling he's going to be on the field this year on 3rd downs far more often than not.

If Peterson can be all over the field Merriman can too.

With the Foley injury, Merriman will likely stay on the field in passing situations now.
He could set a new standard for SLB'ers.
SD don't have anyone listed as a SLB. Instead they list their Outside Linebackers as such. I'm not sure if Merriman plays like a typical SLB or not (covering TE's), but I thought I'd throw that out there.
They can call it whatever they want, but when I see him he is usually over the TE. Seattle does this too but call it left and right OLB.
