Should ESPN do anything? Jason Kelce smashes student's phone (1 Viewer)

Should ESPN do anything?

Kid's lucky his phone was the only thing that got smashed.

It goes without saying that Kelce should be the bigger man in a situation like this and just let it go. But just once, I would kind of like to see a more direct response to this kind of provocation as a warning to others. I think most of us would. Historically, you don't talk to a grown man that way without consequences.

Jason Kelce was heckled by a student at Penn State game that called his brother a "F*ggot"

Kelce grabbed his phone and smashed it.

Of course the internet is cheering him.

You say this as though "the internet" is wrong.

Seems like student was looking for a reaction, and got said reaction.

Sometimes "the internet" gets it right. **** around, and find out.

You say this as though "the internet" is wrong.

Nope. Observation. Anything more is you reading something into it that is clearly not there.
The "of course" reads as a bit gratuitous...as opposed to simply "an observation" - which would be "The internet is cheering him"

(And the generalization of "the internet" as a monolithic response is doing a lot of work here - particularly in light of the responses opposed to Kelce' reaction.)

Social media and those seeking “content” have gotten way too comfortable being disrespectful and expecting no consequences. Scrawny *** kid disrespects a NFL offensive lineman to his face to get a reaction. Wasn’t that long ago, he’d be the one slammed to the ground, not the phone.
He was probably looking for a beating in order to get a payday

I'm a big proponent in we need to institute more punches to the mouth.

Everybody thinks because they have a phone or someone is famous that means they can act like a toolbag towards this person or just in general
Here is where I stand. What on earth was that kid thinking? Looking for a beating, then a payday? Looking for a reaction to go viral and become internet famous?

Stupid kid deserves to be put in an old time stocks for a few hours with a sign that reads "I was an #@$% to someone to make a name for myself".

Just watched the full video. Kelce was just minding his own business walking to the game wasn't even on the clock. Why would EsPN even have a say?
Joe makes these posts in here from time to time to farm engagement and hope for provocative discussion. Since the politics forum is closed, he uses threads like this. It's a pattern.
As in of course the Internet sides with. Which it implies so obviously the Internet would side with him, which is probably wrong?

But I just was making an "observation"...type stuff?

That's interesting too.

Let's say Kelce had punched the student in the mouth and broken his jaw.

What do you think ESPN should do in that situation?
They’d at least suspend him pending criminal investigations. If Kelce punched a kid, while the internet would cheer that as well, he’d be in serious trouble. Glad he showed some composure.

Sorry but I don't need to "farm" any "engagement". We don't have an algorithm here. And with zero ads, we don't make any more money with more traffic or clicks. So zero incentive to be "provocative".

I'm fortunate in none of our Footballguys Staffers have done something like this. But I'll occasionally get email from people upset about something one of our Staffers said online somewhere. So it's something I think about. And part of thinking about it is wondering what the public perception is.

And when I'm wondering about the public perception, sometimes I'll ask our forums.

He was hiding in a hoodie so......

What do you think ESPN should do in that situation?

What should they do: Nothing

But bigger question - why are we adding hypotheticals here?

Let's say the kid (do we even know he is a student?) pulled a gun, and Kelce knocked it out of the kid's hands, while the crowd subdued the kid.

What do you think ESPN should do in that situation?

Does it matter that Kelce used the same slur at the end of the video?
I don't especially care about the slur itself. It's not being used that way -- it's just a school yard insult in this context. But you don't walk up to a grown man and hurl a juvenile insult at his brother for internet clout without expecting a reaction!

Edit: Having seen the video that Joe just posted, I am even more strongly on Kelce's side. That was admirable restraint on his part, and he made his point.

I wonder how many would agree with you that ESPN should do nothing if Kelce were to punch a heckler in the mouth and break his jaw?

Why are we adding hypotheticals here he says before making the most extreme hypothetical.....

Joe, You shouldn't go here. This thread will devolve into all kinds of "woulda, coulda, shoulda" all by itself.

You may be right. I did think it was interesting though about being a big proponent of more punches in the mouth.

Hypothetically, I was just trying to add to the hypotheticals - to see if there was a limit.

You can help set the level of discussion here.
This is High school/college nonsense. Your demo is men in their 40's, 50's 60's+.
I don't think most of us are here for this nonsense.

Knowing ESPN's quest for content, I would guess a new weekly segment where Kelce is forced to pick an upset winner, and they call it the jaw dropper of the week.

ETA: But seriously, if he'd have decked him, it'd certainly be a different story.

I think we have a pretty good level of discourse.

And for what I'm interested in, there aren't "right" or "wrong" answers. I'm interested in what the public thinks ESPN should do.

I rather everyone start a movement where anytime someone acts like that towards someone you have free reign to smash their phone or smash their face.
Perhaps people won't act like A-holes like that anymore.
