Should ESPN do anything? Jason Kelce smashes student's phone (2 Viewers)

Should ESPN do anything?

I saw this JB, and honestly I hadn't thought of it the way you are right now
Yeah! Why wouldn't the standards that ESPN has held a lot of other folks to,
Why wouldn't they apply here?

There are reputable ESPN journalists that have been fired for far less, females I might add that didn't showcase a testosterone burst of masculinity to try and intimidate
-I also would add that I wasn't there and perhaps Kelce should be given the benefit of the doubt until due process or some investigation occurs

I also would totally believe that ESPN woud fire him if they felt he went overboard. Only thing that would keep him is that his brother is dating Taylor Rozelle
That's Pete Rozelle's granddaughter they show at all the Chiefs games

Something about that connection and things that happen behind the scenes, those things might save Jason Kelce from a quick exit
He's no Jeff Saturday

And yes, please forgive the non Football content on this one. I ask as I'm interested in how companies and their representatives are asked to operate.

Not going to parse through all the vids but the kid was yelling at him about “faggots” and bumped into him? If that’s right don’t see an issue.

Not something Kelce should be getting involved in though and now he’s just primed for even more of this stuff.

You say this as though "the internet" is wrong.

Nope. Observation. Anything more is you reading something into it that is clearly not there.
I would say the 'of course the internet is cheering him' statement came across as commentary whether it was intended or not. And who is the internet? Do they always cheer the player in this situation? Maybe but i'm not so sure.

Supposed to have thick skin, but I guess easy to say when not in that situation. But you can't react & destroy others property. Probably should get axed but what do I know.

Does it matter that Kelce used the same slur at the end of the video?
Context is important. If he called the offender the same slur that he called his brother, then it was justified. Is that right? Probably not, but understandable. Just my opinion. I didn’t watch the video. Probably because it really isn’t something I don’t care about. But since it was posted, I do have an opinion.

I voted no suspension.

Punk heckler said something stupid, received immediate consequences, nobody was physically hurt. Seems like a nothingburger to me.
I agree. Get him a new phone and call it a day. Besides, he’s retired, so why do we care?

Mike Tyson recently observed, "Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it." There are consequences for your word choices. This student should have chosen his words (and who he heckled) more wisely.

Hes lucky thats all that happened to him.
He should have beat that guys ***. More people need *** kickings or they wouldn't do **** like that. You dont get to walk around and say crazy things to people with zero consequences.

i dislike companies getting involved in an employee's personal life

that said, ESPN will be pressured by advertisers and I'm fine with a business doing what's necessary to protect itself, but companies should stay unbiased and not get invoved

The reaction was wrong, but the "what would anybody do in that situation" factor mitigates any negative response. I think if he gets the kid another phone and comes out with a half apology like "My reaction wasn't good, but people need to be respectful and I'm always going to stick up for my family," that should suffice. In a perfect world, the kid would come out with his own apology and admit that he went over the line, acknowledge that fans don't get to do whatever they want to sports celebrities and state he'll do better in the future. Kelce could accept the apology and that could be the end of it.

Any act of contrition would let ESPN off the hook and allow it to just go away without any formal punishment.

as part of the internet, I was fine with Kareem Hunt hitting that woman. I don't think you should hit women, but if I was a black guy and some crazy woman was trying to trespass into my hotel room while calling me the n-word. I think I might hit her too.

I think his actions were mitigated by the fact it was a bigoted slur that incited it. as we all know well, that sort of thing is not well looked upon from a corporate standpoint. I agree, ESPN (and maybe Kelce) will buy him a new phone, but I dont anticipate a suspension.

while ESPN would likely say something to the effect of.....'we agree that this comment has no place in the world, we will buy you a new phone as our representative shouldnt have smashed the phone but we do not endorse the behaviour of the individual or the response of our employee'

keep in mind, that is only a guess but the world is all about political correctness now and from that perspective, ESPN likely wont come down too hard on Kelce.

As an adult, you can't let a kid antognize you like that. That said the kid had it coming. Don't talk **** about a man's family and expect to get off clean.

He was there for work

I think if Kelce's punished its for his use of the slur

I think lost in this is a college kid who I expect will claim victimhood when he first introduced the slur.

Wasn't quite thinking about his future job market

What is this idea of calling him "a kid"? Until proven otherwise, he's likely an of age college student and thus full accountable for his actions

I could argue the kid should be thrown out of school, if he is actually a PSU student.
agreed. as an adult he is accountable for his actions.

its a different story if it is a 14 year old kid. kid may get a new phone, but as a student there is the very real possibility of the kid being suspended for non academic Misconduct for doing that in the first place. Universities consider themselves to be institutions of higher learning and likely wont stand for the slur. at least... if that slur made it to live TV. if not, it may be a case of his word against theirs, but universities tend to (overall) be very non tolerant of that sort of behaviour.
