Should one tank a game for playoff position? (1 Viewer)

I would not actually tank a game in this situation in any of my leagues, because I would be ridiculed without mercy for years on end if I ended up losing to the team I "chose" to play.

Exactly one of my points. The rest is just a matter of respect for the league...

This whole discussion is ridiculous. For the people who are worried about the integrity of the league, he already said that the playoff teams are set. Nobody else would be affected by his loss.As for a "better" matchup, you don't have any idea what would be a better matchup. I had Ahman Green this week and watched him get next to nothing against the Lions. My opponent could have had Mike Cloud or Brock Forsey in his lineup and beat me at that spot. It's all just a crapshoot. Put you best roster together and see what happens. And the comparisons to NFL teams resting players doesn't transefer to the fantasy world. Do any of your players benefit from you "resting" them?

I see no ethical problems if tanking helps your team. If most of the league is opposed to such action then they should insist on an enforcable "no tanking" rule. However, I do think there's an ethical line crossed if a team tries to tank by starting players that are not even playing due to injury, suspension, etc.

The point of playing fantasy football is to win championships. That's goal #1. If tanking an individual game helps you achieve that goal, I don't see how it can be considered unethical.
You know, I am 100% against tanking, and I agree with PowerMonster's points wholeheartedly. I would find no fun in a league where people chose to field a team of injured players, bye week players, third stringers, etc. in order to manipulate what they believe is some fractional advantage.I play with a group of guys in our 13th year. We compete. To us, it is my-best-against-your-best, no question.

If you are not playing for the sport, if you are not interested in competition, then I suppose tanking would be OK. I've considered a scenario where I might be in a huge-money league with complete strangers, where my goal is not to compete, but to make money. In this hypothetical situation, I can see the validity of tanking.

So I suppose my question to the original poster would be: what is your primary motivation for playing this game? Is it for the sport? Or is it as Ivan suggests, to win the championship prize money?

With all due respect CrossEyed- what about the guy that wants to watch his last game so he can enjoy a chance to win one vs. a playoff team? He has to sit at home and get a less than stellar effort from a team that is supposed to be one of the best? I am sitting at home w a free Sunday for a chance to get one last shot on a playoff team and I see that they field all the losers on the roster?

Make the playoffs if you want to play a meaningful game against a playoff team.

So a non-playoff team is not worthy of getting the best that a playoff team has to offer on the last week of the reg FF season schedule?

I don't see why it necessarily would be.
Might just give another win to the playoff team to bolster all time W-L record.Might give a guy that paid money to play in all his games a chance to have a real game.Like you said, might just avoid the harshness of tanking and losing THUS saving the potential tanker years of humiliation let alone all the rest of the intangibles like:Being denied trade offers, getting shut down on close rule calls all the time, getting pinched out on WW moves, getting a respite from mandatory league meetings, watching the rest of the league change the draft day to the weekend of the tankers Canadian fishing trip, getting maybe a knuckle sandwich at the next draft (not advocating violence but there is pride and money on the line and w some this can be an issue) and getting no invitations to Sunday NFL parties with the boys. There are a lot of reasons to avoid tanking but if one needs the move to win at all costs- go for it...

I'm under the assumption that the opinions that were asked for have been read. Just don't want to see this turn into a flame war. If there's a mass outcry to unlock it I don't have a problem with that.
