Shuke's 1400 favorite songs by 1400 different artists. (3 Viewers)

I'd play that on Spotify, but I know the song and I am listening to the Side B of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, which is awesome.

Is it your last day before summer school? If so, have a good one.
It might not be the song you think it is (unless you previewed it or something which in that case it’s exactly the song you think it is). Today is the last day. No kids, just checkout, posting final grades, etc.

Heh. I checked the link and now have played the song. It's a different version than I'm used to. Or at least I think. I seem to recall a falsetto somewhere in the mix.

Ah, so it's quiet yet official. Dig it.

That is the original by The Tempos. I do think The Happenings had a cover.

81. Them - Gloria

Remember when we were young and there wasn't an internet to learn about music?  I'm not sure if you all are the same, but for me most of my musical education came from kids who had older siblings.

Them, and particularly this song, reminds me of one of those friends.  Not sure when I heard this, maybe 5th grade.  I thought this was the coolest damn song ever.
Awesome. Love their cover of It's All Over Now, Baby Blue too, and got a soft spot for My Lonely Sad Eyes.

Yep. I love that VH song. It's DLR inflecting and cooing his way through the song.
This live version might be the ultimate case of how delivery can transform the words Snow in San Anselmo

The lyrics are just super basic observations that a visitor to this small town might have

The massage parlor's open
The clientele come and they go
The classic music station
Plays in the background soft and low
Plays in the background soft and low

But the way he delivers it makes it sound like he’s experiencing the rapture.

101. Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper

I always loved this song.  But it's even more iconic not only because of "more cowbell", but its use in The Stand (which I can't find a clip of).
No. I don't have any Blue Oyster Cult. I ate 34 pairs last time around. Where were you?

98. Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon

This song seems to be way ahead of its time.
Saw these guys open for U2 in December 1984.  I bought their debut album a few weeks before.  Snoozeville.  They were worse live.

93. The Cure - Boys Don't Cry

I'm sure this won't be a popular choice for them.  But, like, it's my thread, man.
Solid choice and many to choose from.

Decent band. Decent song. What I really like is that they took their name from Don DeLillo’s book “White Noise”.  Pretty sweet book.

86. Tom Petty - You Got Lucky

One of my favorite videos from early MTV days.
Petty stopped making good music in 1981.  This song (and whatever album it was off of) was the beginning of the end.

83. Beach Boys - God Only Knows

Not really a BB fan, but this song is incredible.
Absolutely. The entire “Pet Shop” album is amazing.

One of the greatest “garage band” songs ever. Some might even call it proto-punk.  The Doors version is garbage.  BTW, that’s Van Heflin on vocals.

74. The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

This may seem low for such an iconic song.  But it's so overplayed so doesn't hold the same place in my heart that it once did.

Also considered: 5:15, You Better You Bet, Love Reign O'er Me
I think I’m one of those weirdos that like the early Who way better than the later Who. The “My Generation” album blows everything else they did out of the water.

To Find A Friend (Ringo on drums) alone makes it a solid album. The other 7-8 great songs makes it a classic. Still great 25 years(!) later.
I don't want any of this lover's lament crap. I want something peppy, something happy, something up-tempo. I want something snappy.

My favorite older VH tune. Kinda punkish.
Yeah. I get that feel too. 👍

they found a dirty faced kid in a garbage can ...

reminds me of early Alice (woulda fit snugly on "School's Out") or the Dolls
Agreed.

Lyrics weren't exactly a strong point for VH
Time-out for you! ⌚

"I'm on the run babe  hoo yeah" doesn't do it for you?
It does it fer me, fer sure. 🏃‍♂️

the right inflection and tone can sell anything I suppose

I might say James Brown live in concert shouting

Come on, up and down and
Round and round, up and down, all around
Right on people, huh, let it all hang out

might beat out any Dylan lyric
Oh yea. That's in-the-moment #### - existential joy, man. 🥳

❤️

I want to isolate the "DLR vocal only Runnin' With The Devil" part where he does the different "Hoooh-ooooh, yeeeeah-YAY!!"s and make them ringtones for every person in my contact list.  Then mass text everyone I know with something, like, "Ugh.  Horrible news today...."  then crank the volume on my phone, leave it on my desk at work, and walk away for about an hour.

This would please me.

Holy moly.

So, that's the original?

Nice.

I still am not sure where I heard it, but I am beginning to believe it was at a summer camp in 4th grade.
you old, man

i keeeeed, i keeed

was forced to sit through that #### at a girl scout's meeting - my babysitter dragged me along, that murderous ##### - they all loved them sum Billy Jack ... cringeworthy ####, but i curiously got woody over the blonde chick - skeletor looking miscreant, but a young OTB likededed.  puberty, eh?

MoCS! get thee to a Nunnery

Please record and post all results.

I could imagine quite an artistic result - perhaps even better than the original.

73. Joe Walsh - In The City

I know the video title says Eagles, but this is the original Joe did for The Warriors.  Probably one of the greatest movies ever.

As I was getting ready to post this, I realized I didn't actually have an Eagles tune on my list.  Not a huge oversight, since I'm not a big fan.  I was close to posting the Eagles' version of this so I could include another Walsh song like The Confessor or Rocky Mountain Way, but I need to give this tune its credit.

So with that said, BONUS MATERIAL ALERT.

73b. Hotel California

Yes a cliche selection, but for good reason.

😑

I don’t care what people think of the Eagles but Hotel California is a well deserved all time classic
no doubt, it's certainly a part of the soundtrack of my life ...you couldn't get away from it in those days.

looking back and listening ...it's pretty good easy listening music.

you would have not gotten that out of me in the 70s - 90s.

Joe is my kind of guy. This song is good memories - Warriors 🙂

The 1st Joe song that really hit me was this:

Life's Been Good

They say I'm crazy but I have a have a good time

I'm just looking for clues at the scene of the crime (shuke code)

Life's been good to me so far

Yep,  The Eagles weren't innovative and had no edge, but they perfected a certain kind of easy going California rock and they did in such a slick manner that is has held up well IMO.

I could never have told ya who did this song - hell, I never even knew the title, but it rox. I've liked from the 1st time I heard it - and I have no clue when or where that was. So, I guess I am not much help here.

71. The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony

I just recently learned about the history of this song.  I don't care if the strings are a ripoff of an arrangement of another song that was really just another arrangement of a traditional song.

Also, girl at 2:35 is probably top 10 ever for me.
Well I never pray,
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah.
I need to hear some sounds that recognize the pain in me, yeah.
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now.
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now.

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends

So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'we haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty-nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say"

I have always appreciated Don Henley's ability to lay waste to the fraudulency of the late 60s/early 70s counterculture.

70. Doors - LA Woman

An all-time favorite to sing (yell) to while driving.

Also considered: Soul Kitchen
We can take a loot of my previous  comments I made about The Eagles and place on the Doors. I am a big fan of this song and Roadhouse Blues. Those combined with Hotel California make some of the best songs to drive to ever recorded.
