41. Steely Dan - Reelin' in the Years

For some reason, because I'm a Phish fan I'm supposed to be a huge Steely Dan fan.  I appreciate the jazz fusion sound, and I like other songs like Peg, Josie, Night By Night, Pretzel Logic, etc.  But I just really can't get into them.  I've never owned one of their albums.

So, yeah, I'm going with this cliche song as my pick.  But you can't argue with the awesomeness of this song.  Also, in the late 80's there was a syndicated radio show by the same name, and they obviously used this song as their bumper music.  At the time they played a lot of 60's/70's stuff.  Man, those classics seemed so old.  That would be like listening to songs circa 2000 now.

Fantastic opening guitar riff. Right up there for the best two-seconds of a song's opening (next to Heart of the Sunrise, coincidentally).

####.  I forgot how good this first album was.  I commented before that SKM has their share of turds, but when it's good, it's really good.  Carry Me Ohio is an awsome pick.

Although that Tiny Cities is a collection of covers, it's so far removed from the original Modest Mouse versions that it feels 100% original.  And it's pretty GD good.  Ocean Breathes Salty or Neverending Math Equation are phenomenal IMO.

I always thought it was guitar.

I’m not a huge Smiths guy but love this song.

Interesting “fact”, I was talking with one of my wife’s friend’s husband at a NYE party this year and he’s a high school teacher in California. He said Mexican teenagers love Morissey, to the point it’s nearly worship. There’s Smith and Morossey T-Shirts all over the school and they love the music. Struck me as very odd, but cool at the same time.

 
27. Prince - Purple Rain

I'm going to admit, I was way too cool to listen to Prince in the mid-80's.  I didn't really ever think much of this song until I saw it played live by a blues band in New Orleans about 10 years ago.  I have since rediscovered how much of a great artist Prince was.

 
Pressure is by Billy Joel. Under Pressure is by Queen (with Bowie). Flash, too? I’d venture that you have only listened to a small slice of Queen’s catalog. When I’m off my phone, I’ll add some links, but the entire albums of Day at the Races and Night at the Opera are brilliant.
