Shutdown Cornerbacks (1 Viewer)

First off who are the shutdown cornerbacks this year?

Top 2

Revis vs Moss- how far do you move Moss down?

Asomugha vs Ocho- Aso locks down half the field, how much does this effect Ocho?

Other top CB's

Samuel vs Hester- will Samuel be on Hester? With the rest of the Eagle DB's banged up will Samuel shut down Hester making the other Bear receivers a better options?

Bailey vs VJax- Is Bailey still considered a shutdown CB?

Finnegan vs AJ- Is Finnegan a shutdown CB? Either way AJ is still a must start

Any other guys who belong on this list?

Anyone have stats to back up the effect these guys have on the WR's this year?

Sorry for all the questions but how about a thread on the shut down CB's each week

Samuel

Sorry for missing this, he's not one usually included in the conversation. He is fun to watch, and his stats are OK - just not in the same class as the others IMO.

To answer the question, "How do they change the ranks week 11" I am not sure how much but it has to some. The Bills corners by no means are shut down but have played well. AJ, MSW and Ocho do not have great matchups on paper. I saw in another thread MSW is almost a must start so then Ocho and AJ are almost must starts as well I would guess.

Johnath Joseph is right there IMO.

Bengals are a tough match-up for any WR.
Texans lit them up, and they gave up 100 yard games to Mike Wallace, Massaquoi, AJ and Hester. DB is such a tough position to master, but their starters have good skillsWhen I have watched them it seems like most of the big plays against them this year have been on screen passes (Ray Rice x2 and Slaton). Its a very aggressive defense, and a lot of OCs chose to max protect (which is why even though their LBs are average, statistically they do well aginst TEs).

Bengals are like most good defensive teams - when they get a good push and put pressure on the QB, good things happen for them.

Samuel

Whoa - hold on a minute.Ask most Eagles fans and they will tell you that Samuel is a playmaker but NOT a shutdown corner. He's a gambler and a ballhawk. Sheldon Brown is much better in coverage.

No way in the world do I put Samuel anywhere close to Revis or Nnamdi.

Yeah the eagles were able to shut down Jackson last week by double coverage . Samuel is not that great a corner. He is a playmaker.

we need a breakdown of what these shut down corners have done and to who! I thought there was a thread on that but can not find...

The Terrorist (Aqib Talib) is quickly becoming one of the leagues top corners. I'm looking forward to watching him go against Colston this week.

Here's how some top WRs have fared against Talib in recent weeks:

Desean Jackson- 1 catch for 1 yard (0 TDs)

Steve Smith (Panthers)- 1 catch for 4 yards (0 TDs)

Randy Moss- 5 catches for 69 yards (0 TDs)

Greg Jennings- 5 catches for 61 yards (0 TDs)

Talib is also tied for 3rd in the league with 5 picks this year.

Ok so I looked up some stats.......

Oak- Nnamdi vs #1 WR

V. Jax 5-56 TD

Bowe 5-56 TD

Marshall 5-67 TD

AJ 2-66

Steve Smith (NYG) 3-70

D. Jax 6-94

B. Edwards with Cotch out 1-14

V. Jax 8-103 TD

OFF

Bowe 6-91

so they did great vs Braylon and the other 8 games the WR #1 has had 75.375 yards and 0.5 TD's per game.

Conclusion is it is HARD to sit OCHO

Perhaps you should click on the link in post #2; that will give you the stats these WRs had v. Nnamdi (v. your research, which is what those WRs accomplished v. Oakland).YW

note I said Oak - Nnamdi and they did great.....the point is you can not bench a #1 because Nnamdi is on the team is what this shows.YW

what does this list mean? I'm serious, someone please enlighten me...
this particular list is their own home cooked rating.you can sort by each category by clicking on it, and if you want more detail on the category just mouse over it.

I really have no idea how well their ratings hold up, but I think it's pretty interesting that while assasmokah has actually given up completions on almost every pass thrown in his direction, they have him down as only being thrown at 17 times all year.

sort by that category and look at the company he keeps in that stat --- that looks to me like the nfl is vouching for him as a shutdown corner.

if you want more game specific stuff, click the 'by game' or 'by week' tabs at top, then pick a particular game and click 'defense', and then choose the 'coverage' tab at top, or you could choose 'player participation' to see where everybody lines up on each snap.

you might want to clear your schedule first, though......

Haha, thanks man. Good stuff.

Did anyone else come away even more impressed with Revis after that segment with Casserly? It seemed like they were trying to discredit his success against Moss a little bit, but I couldn't help but notice how well he ran with Moss and played angles. Sure the safety was lined up in a position to double but in those clips the safety never came over.
