D-bag Matt Kemp snubs Harper for the HR derby. Because it's not like this is an event for the fans or anything.
meh, i wanna see guys who actually, ya know, hit hrs in the hr derby
BUT HE HITS THEM IN BATTING PRACTICE!
That's actually a good reason for a player to be in the HR derby though.
Then let's get Carlos Zambrano in there
Actually, that'd be excellent shtick. Kemp rolls Big Z out there and he drops about 8 HR in the first round.

The quote inspired dozens of t-shirts, various online memes, countless bad jokes, a quip from a sitting Senator, a copyright trademark and an actual beer. Out of all that noise, because of action take by Harper, there may come some real good.In the days after Harper’s quote, Denver Beer Co. brewed a small, special batch of Canadian lager and named it, “Clown Question Bro.” They tapped the first keg Monday afternoon, in time for the Nationals’ arrival in Colorado.Early this week, Charlie Berger, the co-owner of the brewery, received a surprising call: it was someone in Harper’s camp, and he wanted to talk about the profits from the beer.On Monday morning, after the Nationals had arrived in Denver, Harper learned from local news reports about the killing of Officer Celena Hollis, a veteran policewoman who was raising a 12-year-old daughter on her own. Harper had recommended Denver Beer Company donate a chunk of the proceeds to a memorial fund that will support Hollis’s daughter.“It’s exciting to hear from Bryce,” Berger said. “We were making this beer just for fun. We never thought it would pick up to this extent. First of all, we’re definitely flattered. More important, the fact that he was making a lot of good come from it, it’s valiant. It says something about Bryce.”Berger said the brewery will act on Harper’s idea and donate to the Celena Hollis Memorial Fund. Berger has not yet reached out to the family, wanting to give them time to grieve. He hopes the recognition provided by “That’s a clown question, bro” and Harper will increase the effort to raise for Hollis’s family.“At Denver Beer Co, we only made a small amount of the beer,” Berger said. “We’d love to use this as opportunity to make a much, much bigger impact.”You can make a donation to the Celena Hollis Memorial Fund through the Rocky Mountain Law Enforcement Federal Credit Union. If everyone who reads this donates just a couple bucks, that would be a huge contribution to a great cause from our little corner of the internet.By Adam Kilgore | 03:35 PM ET, 06/28/2012
This kid has on hell of a PR team working for him.Not to take anything away from the act. It's a great cause. I'm just saying, his agent or whoever's pulling the PR strings is doing a good job.

I agree that the Nats could probably reasonably justify and benefit from Harper being in the majors today, but an ETA of 2013 seems more responsible.
Reading through the early posts in the thread, this seemed to be the majority opinion. In the bigs by 2013.The fact that he's an All-Star in 2012 is pretty cool.

Pete Rose meets Bo JacksonVia Twitter:

Amanda Comak ‏@acomakHarper & Trout, asked about friendship. Trout: "We really don't like each other." Harper: "It's like Bird&Magic. He's Magic. I'm Bird."
I like this, I just hope both can live up to the hype. To me Trout is Grady Sizemore on acid, but I think Harper has a higher power potential making him the better probable player over time. But the way he plays, he might have issue with injuries. I hope not, he's fun to watch.

Bill James wrote this 30 years ago about another ballplayer with the same initials as Harper.

"Remember what they always used to say about Butch Hobson up in Boston? The fullback attitude. Get it? He's a football player; he is the poorest percentage player of our time. He's all-out, into the wall, take out the baseman, dive for everything. Butch always plays as if there were no game tomorrow. The problem with that,is that there is a game tomorrow and one the day after."
Harper is very young and very talented. But he'll have a longer and more successful career in baseball if he chills out.

I don't see Harper as a Ryan Freel, reckless abandon type. Not at all. He is overly emotional, but so far it hasn't become an issue. Odds are he'll always be fiery, but he'll mature too. If he really is a straight edge Mormon dude underneath it all I really don't think there's much to be worried about going forward.

I'd love to know what his bat speed is. He takes such violent swings. Reminds me of Randall Simon in that way. Probably a terrible comparison because Simon had a swing that looked like he was chopping wood, but that's the name which came to mind.

There are guys who started going balls-out on everything - Jim Edmonds comes to mind. Once he gets the pee and vinegar out of his system I think he'll settle down.

Kids going to be a good one someday.
I don't think there is a "someday" about it. He is a good one now.
I think Ref was being humorous.
You might be right. I'll have to check the calibration on my sarcasm detector. After 10+ years here, I though I'd have that down by now.
Yeah my post was about :45 seconds after he started the year 2-2 2HR.

Kid is a stud now. If we redrafted MLB as a whole Harper is my #1 Pick.
