SI Peter King reports Favre to Vikings not dead yet (1 Viewer)

January 26th, 2009 – 7:33 PM by Judd Zulgad Did you really think all of this Brett Favre to the Vikings talk was finished?

Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, who probably talks to Favre more than anyone in the media, went on ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” Monday and said the Jets quarterback was “done” playing. King, though, later added he had a “gut feeling” Favre would seriously consider a return if he could somehow land in Minnesota.

This, of course, would complete Favre’s dream of being able to stick it to his former employer, the Green Bay Packers, twice a season. “If he’s not going to be able to play where he really wants to play, I think he’s not going to play,” King said.

We found this item on the New York Post website. King said he last talked to Favre three weeks ago before the Jets hired Rex Ryan as their coach. King added that the Jets medical staff suggested Favre have surgery on his torn right biceps tendon if he wants to play in 2009 and Favre declined to have the procedure.

What isn’t clear is if Favre would consider having the surgery if he were able to land in Minnesota. The saga surrounding Favre and the Vikings first developed last summer when it was clear the relationship between the quarterback and the Packers was going to come to a not-so-happy end. Favre, who had retired in the offseason and then changed his mind, wanted to come to Minnesota but the Packers had no intention of letting that happen.

The Packers even filed tampering charges against the Vikings, although the NFL ended up clearing Brad Childress and Co.

Eventually, Favre was traded to the Jets and, according to reports, the Packers inserted a poison pill into the deal that if Favre was dealt to Minnesota, New York would have to give Green Bay three first-round picks. Favre has two years left on his contract and thus the Jets won’t be trading him to the Vikings.

However, if the Jets elect to release Favre, that could add a very interesting twist to this situation. Especially since the Vikings quarterback situation for 2009

As I understand the poison pill does not apply if Favre is released by the JETS, he would be free to sign with anyone.

If released, he could go anywhere. Of course, he tried that in Green Bay and it didn't work. Do you think the Jets will cave? Or, will they also take a hard line and refuse to release him?

I'd prefer the Vikes not go after a one and done vet QB, which is what I think Favre is. I think Favre wore down enough at the end of last season that any team should be skeptical. Frankly, the main reason I'm opposed to Favre is this recent blurb in Peter King's MMQB column:

When owner Woody Johnson said Thursday in New York that Favre would have to participate in the offseason program if he wanted to return, he was echoing something felt in the Jets locker room and said openly after the season by safety Kerry Rhodes. Problem is, Favre will never attend a team's full offseason program. Those programs were ones he skipped for 16 springs and summers in Green Bay -- and you're kidding yourself if you think he's going to move back to New Jersey for 12 to 16 weeks in March. "I've never been in a [full] offseason program,'' Favre told me a month ago.
I think a team would have to be insane to take on an old dog like Favre who is opposed to building chemistry over the offseason. It may have been something Favre could get away with when he was a staple in GB and already had chemistry with teammates, but I don't think any QB can turn chemistry on and off like Favre seems to believe he can. It's bound to hurt the offense if regular season is still somewhat his preseason.

I think the Jets are ready and willing to do anything they need to do in order to get his $$$ of their books..I'm not sure if just releasing him satisfys that.... favre and the Jets might have to work out a deal and trade him to Minny for basically nothing. As a Jets fan, given it's 13 million I'm leaning towards letting him go.

They can't trade him to Minnesota, if they do Green Bay gets 3 first round draft picks.

According to the article and the rumors...if the Jets trade him to Minny they would have to give up the 3 1st rounders to GB.So...go ahead and trade him NY.

I picture a pouting lower lip when I read this.

Please don't let this happen, I really don't want 3 months of all Favre all the time on espn and nfln. I really don't want TO to have another tantrum either. The coverage on the stations about the actual game of football gets lost and it turns into reality tv and there's enough of that crap everywhere else.

I honestly just want Favre to retire or return to the Jets quickly and quietly, I don't want to see 3 months of coverage about him again.

The ONLY other scenario is him going back to the Packers and the ONLY reason it would be worth 3 months of hell seeing it spammed on espn/nfln is to see Sho Nuff hyperventilate on a daily basis. :excited:

To "complete Favre’s dream of being able to stick it to his former employer, the Green Bay Packers, twice a season" as the article says.Though...is throwing the ball to Collins and Woodson really sticking it to the Packers? :goodposting:

Favre Unsure Whether He'll Play in 2019

January 26, 2019

With the Super Bowl between the Mexico City Chihuahuas and the London Sherlocks just a few days away, once again our attention is being diverted by the on again, off again saga of Brett Favre and his possible retirement. Now 49 but with his consecutive game streak still intact, Favre has told Patriots' GM Wes Welker and team President Tom Brady he'll decide in March whether to return for his 29th season.

"My arm still feels fine, I just don't know if I have the heart for it any more," stated Favre yesterday. "Of course, if they would trade me to Minnesota so I could stick it to that scumbag Thompson in Green Bay I'd be there in a second!" When reminded that Thompson retired 4 seasons ago, and that the Minnesota franchise is now the London team playing in the Super Bowl, Favre muttered "Oh yeah, I keep forgetting."

Asked if his 13-27 TD-INT ratio in 2018 will at all factor into his decision, he looked surprised. "Of course not. Look, if you want to make plays, you gotta take risks. Those interceptions don't matter to me. What matters is that I'm loved when I throw touchdowns. Just ask ESPN. Just ask Commissioner Madden. I put people in front of their TVs and butts in stadium seats and they all know it. Why do you think teams keep bringing me back? Don't forget, I'm Brett Favre."

Asked who he thinks will win the Super Bowl this Sunday, Favre answered "I can't even remember who's playing. The Frito Banditos and the Fog Heads or something like that? Man I miss the good old days..."

You know what - I wish Peter King would tell us.He writes this crap - Yet, it says he can't be traded and as far as we know the Jets take a 13 million dollar hit if he's cut... So, how Mr King does your fantasy play out....With a new contract can he more easily be cut without the Jets taking a huge hit?

I'm so over Favre and his off-season circus, but if he gets released Minnesota should give him a try. I think they would be legitimate SB contenders with a tough D, awesome run game and dome games for Favre (never mind how he's played in domes. It's better for him as he ages not to let the weather interfere with his throwing).

Favre isn't a long-term anything for anyone, but if he was behind center I think they would have beaten the Eagles. If I was a Vikings fan I'd feel pretty good about it. Who else would be available to QB for them? I don't think Warner will leave AZ.

I have one question.

How long of a recovery is Brett's surgery if he has it performed

I dont think it costs the Jets anything to release Brett. The salary is not guaranteed and Packers ate the salary bonus with the trade last year. But the Jets also do not have the same cards to play with as the Packers last year. There salary situation is bleak compared to a team that had tons of cash and could sit and wait it out. They also dont have a QB they truly believe in on roster like the Packers did. The Jets cannot afford to play this game in the end. They could use the 13 million that cutting Brett opens up for them to either get another QB or sign other needs.

I think Brett can come in and help any team. I blame the shoulder for alot of his picks later in the season. He really looked bad on the deep ball. But I also think a team needs him to come in earlier than he did for the Jets last year. He is no spring chicken and needs time to learn. I hope he goes back to the Jets and gets the surgery done in the end. I think he can still play.

I think they SAVE $13 million if they cut him, not take a $13 million cap hit.

Yeah well. I mean, ignoring EVERYTHING else that is wrong about the idea, the dude's gotta have surgery and recover for it before next season starts anyhow, at his age it's unclear if that would help him improve upon his performance this past season. I don't want to just guess that he'd be good.

I'd much rather the Vikings go after Cassel hard.

It's been reported elsewhere that Favre needs surgery on the arm to play in 2009 and he's in no hurry to get it. That is precisely how Favre forces the Jets to release him, and I presume, avoids offseason programs.

However, If the JETS release him, Favre is free to go to Minny, with nothing due the Packers from the JETS, trade will never happen, but an outright release maybe

I am not sure where this surgery angle is coming from....read plenty of articles at most Favre would need arthroscopic surgery and some have said he could even play in 09 without that even. Why be in a hurry for surgery you might not need.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3800421

Awesome CP!

As one who was born and raised near Lambeau Field, who still bleeds green and gold, and who owns an autographed Favre jersey, I think I can speak for 95% of the Packer fans who regardless of how they felt last August, are just glad that Favre is somebody else's controversy this year.

EDIT: Make that 99.62% of all Packer fans (according to a recent survey).

You're catching on. :) But it has nothing to do with needing surgery. It's about dragging the Jets out until they do what he wants.

I don't know that I'd be any more excited to see Favre QBing the Vikes than I am Jackson.
As a Packer fan I know I would be excited for the Packers to play against him 2X a year. There isn't anyone on the Vikings that could control him enough for him to play the way he should instead of play the way he wants to.

With that defense and running game, they need a caretaker at QB.

If the Jets SAVE 13 million by letting him go, I don't see where Favre has any power at all and why this isn't a done deal already. I suspect they wanted to see how the new coach felt but, I also suspect this will easily be wrapped up before or during the Combine.

The Jets will need to know if they have 13 million on their cap to decide who to draft Vs if they can afford any FA's.....

Complete rumor but I also heard that in the deal with GB the 3 1st rd picks were if Favre ended up in Minn under any circumstances during his contract. I assume that would mean trade or FA signing - if true not sure if that would be even legal under the CBA but would explain why the Jets do not want to cut him.

I'm not sure that they take a hit at all by cutting him. They didn't pay his signing bonus and that's usually the basis of the cap hit when a player is cut. Admittedly I am not sure if this is the case, just my understanding.

I think Woody Johnson actually WANTS him back. While he' s not the meddling owner on the Jerry Jones-Danny Snyder level having a "star" like Favre excites him.

I heard that their is no provision in the JETS/Packer's deal that the JETS owe anything to GB if Favre is cut, ONLY if they trade him to MN. I think the JETS look to a new start and cut Favre, now where/if Favre ends up anywhere remains to be seen.

I could misunderstand the phrasing, but if they cut him, wouldn't his contract be over?
