Sieg Heil, Queen Elizabeth! (1 Viewer)

The Brits are going crazy over this. I always knew Edward (the Duke of Windsor who abdicated) was a Nazi sympathizer. According to William Manchester's The Last Lion, the Duke and his wife were photographed giving the Nazi Salute in Spain in 1938, and the photo was altered by the British government.

Anyhow, Elizabeth was only 7 and I'm sure she thought it was fun to whatever Uncle Edward said. Pretty tasteless of Rupert Murdoch to bring it up 70 years later, but that's what he does.

meh, my mom has a picture of me when I was six picking my nose with my finger almost poking my brain. Don't really remember the moment but my mom chuckles whenever she brings it up.

She was just following her uncle who is long gone.

Much ado about nothing...but it is the British royal family, so I'm sure there will be big news for a while.

BTW, its "Sieg"...in German the i-e combo is pronounced "EE" while the e-i combo is pronounced "EYE".

That Guardian piece was well written. I can't see what possible relevance that few seconds has all these years of history later.

It sold a lot of newspapers for Murdoch. And the Guardian had a story on this 3 days in a row. And each of those stories featured the picture of little Elizabeth even as they ripped Murdoch for bringing this up.

Well everyone is trying to sell papers and that image is everywhere. I get your point though, they shouldn't be running it anymore than Murdoch if they are being honest.

Remember when Truman was in the KKK?

lol, i found this to be funny

Harry S. Truman, the Democratic Missouri politician who became president in 1945, dabbled with the Klan briefly. In 1924, he was a judge in Jackson County, Missouri, which includes Kansas City. Truman was up for reelection, and his friends Edgar Hinde and Spencer Salisbury advised him to join the Klan. The Klan was politically powerful in Jackson County, and two of Truman's opponents in the Democratic primary had Klan support. Truman refused at first, but paid the Klan's $10 membership fee, and a meeting with a Klan officer was arranged

According to Salisbury's version of the story, Truman was inducted, but afterward “was never active; he was just a member who wouldn't do anything”. Salisbury, however, told the story after he became Truman's bitter enemy, so historians are reluctant to believe his claims.[2]

According to Hinde and Truman's accounts, the Klan officer demanded that Truman pledge not to hire any Catholics or Jews if he was reelected. Truman refused, and demanded the return of his $10 membership fee; most of the men he had commanded in World War I had been local Irish Catholics.[3]

That looks like they're dancing in that photo, not giving a salute. Even so, if that pic was taken anytime before 1939, that was before the death camps started, and American kids used to use that salute as well.

Hell, Sen. Robert Byrd was a freaking Exalted Cyclops (seriously, what's with these titles) of the KKK. And at one point wrote: "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

Non story
Really? I think it's historically significant where the British monarchy was politically. It's no reflection on the current Queen ( how could she comprehend?) obviously; but it is an important piece of history.
But it's not new info. Edward was forced to abdicate because he wanted England to support the Axis powers. This adds nothing to that, we know where he was politically already.
He abducated so he could marry a divorced woman.....

Regardless, the photos are historically significant...

Where are you getting this, Walking Boot? It's not in any history I've read, and I've read quite a few on this subject.

She was still sleeping with Joachim von Ribbentrop after the engagement to Edward, and passed allied secrets to German high command until they were exiled to Bermuda. The whole reason they were sent to Bermuda was to keep them out of the loop so they couldn't spy more for Germany.
again, what is your source? The books I read, particularly Shirer and Manchester, relate that they were sent to Bermuda to avoid the political embarrassment of remaining on the continent and also because German spies were trying to kidnap them. Nowhere is it mentioned that they were passing secrets to the Nazis, nor that Simpson was sleeping with Ribbentrop.
