Newest linebacker familiar presence to Saints' brass

Of all the newcomers who have joined the Saints this week, middle linebacker Danny Clark has the potential to make the biggest impact.
The Saints have been searching in vain for a consistent presence in the middle of their defense for the better part of the past decade, and Clark, 29, has the credentials to fill that void.
Clark, 6 feet 2, 245 pounds, was a starter the past four years in Oakland and Jacksonville. He led the Raiders in tackles each of the past two seasons.
"I thought I would be there (in Oakland). But more importantly, I'm glad I'm here," said Clark, a seven-year veteran who signed with the Saints less than 24 hours after he was released by the Raiders on Sunday. "I'm glad I'm at a place where I'm wanted and where I can compete for a starting position. I'm excited about it, and I like the direction this team is going."
Some of the Saints' brass were aware of Clark's background. Coach Sean Payton was an assistant at Illinois for one year when Clark was with the Illini, and vice president of player personnel Rick Mueller was working for the Jaguars when they drafted Clark in the seventh round in 2000.
Clark lost his starting job this year when the Raiders switched from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3, and his $1.75 million salary was deemed too high for a backup. He signed a one-year deal with the Saints for an undisclosed amount.
"Any time you get released, fired from a job, you're not happy about it. So I'm definitely not happy with how I had to depart," Clark said. "But at the same time, it opened another door. I'm a very optimistic person, so I was optimistic about my new opportunity."
Clark's arrival set into motion yet another shift in the depth chart.
As of now, Mark Simoneau is projected to start at middle linebacker when the Saints open the season at Cleveland on Sunday. Scott Fujita will start on the strong side, with Scott Shanle on the weak side. Alfred Fincher is working at backup strongside linebacker, with Terrence Melton working as a backup weakside linebacker.
