Since Matt Millen is retained will (1 Viewer)

It would be hard to blame them if they did. Past history is past history, and they still need a #2 WR for their vertical offense to work.

I'd be very surprised if the Lions draft an offensive skill position player with their first pick.

Calvin Johnson would be a curious fit for Martz's offense.
A 6'3 235 lb WR in an offense where most of the successful WRs have been 6'0 200 or less? Roy is of course bigger, but I also think hes alot more explosive in a short area than Johnson is. Calvin Johnson is a physical freak, and has good straight line speed, but one of the biggest knocks on him(or at least from the 6-8 games of him Ive seen) is that hes slow out of his break. I cant imagine that working really well in Martz's offense.I think Johnson will be successful no matter what, but I think its kind of a poor fit, and that the Lions would be much better suited to go for a DE like Gaines Adams, who looks like he'll be an excellent Cover 2 rusher, and pick up a WR better suited to their offense later on. I think Martz's offense would be perfect for Teddy Ginn's skills, and really mask his weaknesses as a player.

I think the Lions have an opportunity to grab a top-rated WR. When have they ever been able to pass the opportunity up under Matt Millen?

Calvin Johnson to the Lions is a lock, based upon their current roster and their recent drafting history. Although, they could also go with Quinn, I still have to stay with Johnson as the lock.

People act like Charles Rogers and Mike Williams were terrible picks, but pretty much everyone considered those guys to be elite prospects. My guess is that a lot of teams would've taken Rogers at #2 if they had been given the opportunity. It's easy to look back and say he was obviously going to be a bust, but I think most people looked past the failed piss test and saw a 6'3" WR with 4.3 speed and a history of top production. No one knew he would be the complete flop that he was.

The same goes for Mike Williams. He was a dominant college player who was widely considered a solid first round prospect. I think it's also important to remember that he has only been in the NFL for two years. It's not like his career is necessarily over.

Anyhow, I don't think Johnson would be a bad pick, but I think the Lions ultimately have much greater needs. Russell or Thomas would probably be a better selection.

I don't see a need with Roy and Furrey doing so well :X I still can't believe Furrey's season. The guy was a free safety with the Rams last year - Who "by the way" led his team in INT's.

I hated Charles Rogers from the rumors (that proved true) about his MSU drug habits.

Roy Williamss was a very solid pick. Given the fact we had Rogers and Roy I hated the Mike Williams pick because of the "unknown factor" being so young and out of football for a year.

I would not be upset if the drafted Calvin..only because of all the three including Roy.. Calvin seems to be a can`t miss.

Because FF and real-life are different things.Furrey constantly struggled with drops and getting open. Hes well suited to the slot role in Martz's offense, but is playing out of place outside. He doesnt need to be on the field as much as he is.Martz's offense operates with 3 WRs, and right now they have 2. I expect the Lions to bring in Kevin Curtis to play on the outside and move Furrey inside.

So is it pretty much common knowledge that Charles Rogers smoked and snorted away his career? He must've been a real cancer if no other team in the NFL would even take a chance on him.

Hes not worth the headaches for a guy who is one strike away from a year suspension.

The Lions would have an insane WR corps. I wouldn't count Mike Williams as a bust quite yet, although he hasn't met expectations.

The lions have a solid WR2 in Furrey, are paying for a WR1 whom they like in Roy, and are both paying for and hoping BMW can turn things around. Calvin to the Lions would be a joke, and it would get Millen fired by the owner, IMO. That being said, it wouldn't surprise me.

Isn't Calvin Johnson staying in school?
Given his reputation and image right now, I'd wonder why he would even consider staying in college. Anyone seen any links either way?
Johnson's decision in doubt
What is a foregone conclusion to outsiders - Johnson's gone - is in doubt to one of the wide receiver's closest confidants.
Decision looms for Johnson
"My advice is to stay in the present," said Arica Johnson, Calvin's mother. "Do everything you need to do, and everything will fit together like the pieces of a puzzle."

Those pieces have to come together by Jan. 15, the deadline for juniors to declare for the NFL draft.

One thing that probably won't be a factor is the teams at the top of the draft order. Arica Johnson said Calvin Johnson doesn't care where he plays.

Johnson is projected to be a top-three pick, which would bring a contract worth millions of dollars.

This isn't the first time Johnson has had to make a decision between taking money or continuing his education. Johnson could have been earning a living catching fly balls the last three summers instead of receiving tuition and room and board for catching footballs the last three falls.

"I don't think people realize how good a baseball player he was," Calvin Johnson Sr. said, adding that scouts said his son would have been drafted had he been interested in signing a contract.

That was never a consideration.

"The college experience is very important," Arica Johnson said. "You don't want to send your children straight out into the world."
I usually scoff at this stuff and expect the player to come out in a situation like this. But this is one of those cases that really feels like it could go either way.

The Lions would be better off today if they had not paid so much attention to (and money on) the WR position in previous drafts. Yes, they have Roy Williams who is very good. But they also tied up high draft picks and money in Rogers and Mike Williams. Detroit is not real good at drafting WR's very high. They'd be better off addressing other positions with their first pick.

Do you have any stats to back this up? From just watching the games, I'd have to say he was about as sure-handed as anybody in the NFL. I can remember one drop from the entire season.ETA: To stay on the topic, I think Martz' ego is too big (if he stays) to think he needs to add another #2 overall WR. The Lions have more obvious holes on their team. They will, however, screw up this pick. I can see them taking Thomas at #2 and having the highest price RT in the league.

Everybody forgets that before the freak collarbone injury (running into Dre Bly in practice) he was actually off to the start that everybody had hoped for. It started going downhill for him after they drafted Roy Williams and Rogers became the #2 WR. Then, his ego "forced" him to go back to his dorm room ways.
