Skin Cancer (1 Viewer)

Anyone ever have it? I'm assuming it is a lot less dangerous than other types of cancer but haven't taking the time to read about it yet.

I'm of Irish decent and have fairly light skin. Last year I went to the dermatologist and they freezes off a few dry skin areas on my face that they said here pre-cancer something or other. I went a coue of days ago again and they did the same in two spots on my face, it doesn't feel good when they do it and I look like crap for a few days but not a big deal at all. However, there was an area on my forehead where I had an area that had bleed on occasion and the doctor didn't like the look of it so they did a biopsy. I will find out in a week or two but sounded like even if it was cancer you are looking at a day procedure which seems like a walk in the park to what one would normally equate with any other type of cancer.

Anyone here with experience?

I'm part Irish and have had a small dry patch on one cheekbone for a couple of years now. I suppose I should see a doc? A dermatologist?

As long as they catch it early you shouldn't need anything other then a removal of the skin around the area.

I'm 47 with light skin and many freckles/moles. Been going to a dermantologist once a year for the past 5 years. I've had 5 or 6 biopsys.. two came back as "cancer like".. further test of the skin area around them came back negative.

Recommend all see your personal doctor first and they will refer you if need be. In case you weren't paying full attention to the news President Carter's cancer started as skin cancer so GET CHECKED!

So could you say you were a cancer survivor if that happens? That would be a great, easy way to some sympathy.

My father, also Irish, had a similar story to yours. Saw something that looked sketchy, had a biopsy, found that it was cancerous. He had it removed, wore a big bandage for a few days, then it was over. He goes back for regular checks (annually I think), and I think has had to get another one removed one other time.

My (limited) understanding is that as long as it's picked up early, it's usually not a big deal. So be smart with hats and whatnot in the sun, get checked out regularly, etc.

Fair skinned Irish heritage guy here.

Two cases of basal cell carcinoma. Since both were on my face, I opted for plastic surgeon. He's and older guy and has removed thousands of skin cancers. He's a gruff and grouchy guy, but damn good. I see him once a year for a once over.

German/Irish work outside alot. I go to the derm every 6 months just for PM. So far so good only a few shots of liquid nitrogen to my temples and ears. Don't let it linger!

DAMN OUR SEXY, FAIR IRISH SKIN!!!!....We can drink like mules and #### like rabbits....but we can't go out by the light of a Full Moon for fear of getting cancer!

I've had several basal cell carcinomas cut off me and one squamous cell...which was a little bit scarier. Now I've got a big ugly mole that developed this summer that looks pretty scary. Having it checked next week. This one looks more like the melanoma pics I've seen online.

The pool in my backyard does not go well with my English/German skin.

:oldunsure:

I have a chicken pox scar on my right hip that has recently "grown". After a night of hard drinking, I literally tore it off and bandaged it up. Lots of blood, messy.

Anyone else experience a similar situation regarding an old chicken pox scar?

It has returned and now I am quite concerned with the possibility of it being cancerous. I will consult with a dermatologist, post haste!

I had a melanoma removed in law school. Caught it at Stage 1. It was weird looking. Shiny black with blue swirls in it.

Basal cell carcinoma is fairly harmless. Usually they are cut, frozen, or lasered off and you are on your way. Six month check ups with the dermatologist for the rest of your life. If the basal cell goes untreated for years/decades it may require a surgery to remove.

Squamous cell, I don't know much about.

Melanoma is the real deal. If not caught early it can spread to other parts of the body. It can show up anywhere. A buddy of mine had a melanoma on his ear (age 23), required surgery and chemo, he just had his 5 year follow up and is cancer free. An acquaintance (early 40's) had a melanoma on his nose, had outpatient surgery and skin grafts and that was it. A friend's dad (early 60's) had melanoma on his foot, after months of treatment at MD Anderson followed by surgery and he is cancer free for about 10 years. Another friend's mom (late 60's) had a melanoma inside her chest, went through months of treatment at Mayo off and on for years, she has been in an almost hospice state for 2 years, not pretty. Another friend's sister had melanoma in her mid 20's and after months of flying back and forth to MD Anderson for treatment she didn't make it. (All of these cases were in AZ/NM fwiw)

Melanoma can be devastating if not caught early.

Minimize sun exposure, use protection, get anything abnormal checked out today.

So I have basal cell carcinoma, will have to have it removed. Mostly just worried about a scar as it is on my forehead. I'm going to be a vampire from here on out and avoid the sun as much as possible.

I have had melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and also solar keratoses. The melanoma was on my nose, and I would probably describe it as similar to what the OP did. Mine was next to my nose, and I thought it was just a pimple. It was slightly darker than usual and after it didn't go away for a few weeks and started oozing blood I went in to have it checked. They took a biopsy, and a week later I was notified that it was melanoma and I was scared to death. They advised I go in for surgery to check the severity of it. Within the next few days I was scheduled for Mohs surgery and they took one cut, analyzed it for maybe 20 minutes, told me they got it all. Patched me up with some skin grafts and I was done. Overall it was a pretty painless ordeal, but I was lucky that I caught it so early. The scar from the surgery is barely noticeable.

The basal cell carcinoma also involved Mohs, but it required two cuts, and it was on my back. Also not a big deal, but I was going to the dermatologist every 3 months after the melanoma, then it went ot 6 months, and now I go to the dermatologist every year to have things checked out. Other than the occasional solar keratosis that needs freezing off I have been okay.

Currently at the cancer center getting treatment 50 of 52 for stage 3c melanoma. Went through 3 surgeries on my neck area, before we decided on an experimental immunotherapy treatment called PD-1. Literally melted away the tumor in my neck after the first treatment. Only side effects have been fatigue and itchiness.

Oh, I am of Irish descent and spent my teenage summer years at the beach without applying any type of sunscreen. So many sunburns, so young and dumb.

There is an ointment they can use to kill the Basel cell without a scar. I don't remember the name of it. It takes a few weeks to work and as it works it will look like you have a giant pimple on your forehead. When it's done there will be no scar. If you do not want a scar ask about this treatment.

Very happy to hear things are looking good for you. That's some scary stuff.

FWIW, I have had two Mohs surgeries done (one right next to my nose in the middle of my face) and its very hard to see any scarring. Most people have no clue.

Good luck!!

I think I can top you on not using sun screen.. Back in 1987 ( Yea, I'm old get over it ;) ) We use to put Vegetable( Crisco) Oil on our Stomach while tanning as it really tanned it up..

Many years later Seinfeld had the Kramer using butter episode and the memories were oh so livid .. :lmao:

sucks waiting, but I wouldn't worry, I don't think its skin cancer. I'm no doctor, but it sounds more like ball cancer to me.

My first year after college I went to the dermatologist and I had two different moles removed. The derm told me if I'd waited another month or two I would have been in "real trouble." If you're fair-skinned, go to the dermatologist. It's a 10 minute, non-invasive procedure, and it could save your life.

Lots of fair skinned folks here; my wife and I are both darker skinned (Italian/slavic descent) but live in Phoenix so lots of sun exposure, plus as a youth in the northeast. In her 20s she had a large mole on her back which led her to the derm, it was BCC. She said "hey, you've got a couple of moles, you should get a checkup too." So I did. They found a few they didn't like and lopped them off. Found out soon thereafter they were dysplastic nevi (the precursors to melanoma mentioned earlier). I've since had several others removed, and for a while had to go more frequently than my wife because the nevi are more dangerous apparently than BCC.

I'm like a lot of guys who aren't into going to see a doctor, especially if nothing feels wrong, but IMO anyone who has spent a lot of time in the sun or has any moles which are questionable should do themselves a big favor and go for an exam.

I need to get checked out as well. I have a mole on my shoulder that has been concerning me for some time but I've been putting off getting it looked at.

I could not agree more. I have a friend that also had melanoma, but his was a lot worse. He went in to have a mole on his back checked out. On the surface it didn't look like anything, but now he has a scar that looks like an aerial view of the Grand Canyon running up and down his entire back. He had to go through a major surgery, chemo, etc. Going into the appointment he thought they would just freeze it off and be done with it, but that checkup literally saved his life.

I have day surgery tomorrow to remove the basal cell from my forehead. I had a consult last week and the doctor seemed to be good so I'm not expecting any issues. However, since it is on my face they cut out just beyond what is showing and then look at it under a microscope. From there they often then have to cut out more and repeat this process. Not likely but a chance this process is repeated multiple times which means a long day. Doctor said they would give me a Valium so that should mellow me out. Sounds like there will be a scar but nothing that bad. There is some nerve in my temple that could be an issue depending on how big the basal cell is but most likely not an issue.

All in all could be a lot worse. Please go get yourself checked though if you are concerned about something on your skin. Seems like the only time this stuff turns really serious is if you let it linger for a long time.

Best wishes for tomorrow. :)

Just went last month for the first time for precautionary reasons. I was clean (phew) and scheduled another for a year out. Get in the habit.

All and all a pretty easy day. Popped a Valium and they were done in less than two hours. Feeling some pain but nothing too bad.

My doctor had a picture of Peter Cetera hanging in the room where I had the procedure, a glam headshot of him. The nurse told me he is a big fan and has multiple pictures of him in various rooms. He was also blaring some Mike & The Mechanics while cutting me open. Bizarre stuff.

Glad to hear you are feeling well but between Cetera pics and Mike & The Mechanics my anxiety woulda been thru the roof :D
