Redskins | Lefotu found unconscious in his room

Published Wed Aug 9 11:12:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) The Associated Press reports Washington Redskins rookie OL Kili Lefotu was found unconscious in his room and was undergoing tests at a hospital Wednesday evening, Aug. 9. Coaches became concerned when Lefotu failed to show up for the team's 7 p.m. practice. Head coach Joe Gibbs said Lefotu appeared to be doing better, but doctors had yet to diagnose what happened. Lefotu was to remain at Loudoun County Hospital overnight for more tests. Gibbs also said Lefotu had attended the afternoon meetings and showed no signs of illness.

Probably. If he passed out because of a brain hemmorage or blood loss he'd be dead right now. I'm calling diabetes, ESPECIALLY since he's an offensive lineman

Redskins' Lefotu Found Unconscious in Room

Rookie Lineman Taken to Hospital for Tests

ASHBURN, Va. (Aug. 9) - Washington Redskins rookie offensive lineman Kili Lefotu was found unconscious in his room Wednesday evening and was undergoing tests at a hospital.

Coaches became concerned when Lefotu failed to show up for the team's 7 p.m. practice. Representatives were sent to the National Conference Center, where the players are being housed. They found Lefotu unresponsive and called emergency services to take Lefotu to a hospital.

Coach Joe Gibbs said Lefotu appeared to be doing better, but doctors had yet to diagnose what happened.

"He's responsive, he's talking, which wasn't the case when they first found him at the dorm," Gibbs said. "The first set of tests, they were looking for something bleeding, and they didn't find anything. The first set of tests came back without anything that we should be alarmed about."

Gibbs said the Redskins training staff was not aware of any similar problems in Lefotu's medical history.

Gibbs also said Lefotu had attended the afternoon meetings and showed no signs of illness. The team took longer than usual to become aware of Lefotu's illness because his roommate, Manaia Brown, had been released earlier in the day.

"Anytime something like this happens, it's serious," Gibbs said.

Lefotu was a seventh-round draft pick from Arizona in this year's draft.

Are we sure it's diabetes? Dehydration perhaps? I'm not a doctor.

Redskins | Lefotu much better

Thursday Published Thu Aug 10 10:18:00 p.m. ET 2006

(KFFL) Updating a previous report, Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com, reports Washington Redskins OL Kili Lefotu (undisclosed) is doing much better Thursday, Aug. 10, according to director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer. Tyer added, "He feels good. He's talking. He called me by my name and has a good memory. He couldn't remember exactly what happened in the episode."

Washington Redskins rookie Kili Lefotu showed signs of improvement Aug. 10, and doctors were working to determine what caused him to lose consciousness in his room the day before.

Lefotu, an offensive lineman, was being treated at Loudoun County Hospital, where he underwent a series of tests.

"He's doing much better today," Redskins trainer Bubba Tyer said. "He feels good. He's talking. His fiance came in to be with him. I saw him this morning and he talked to me, called me by name. He has good memory. He can't remember exactly what happened to him yesterday."

Lefotu was found in his room at the National Conference Center, where the players are housed during training camp, after he failed to show up for the Aug. 9 7 p.m. practice. Tyer said Lefotu had been alert enough to ask an operator to call 911, then drifted in and out of consciousness after paramedics and team officials arrived.

"We never had a question with his breathing," Tyer said. "Pulse rate, heart were stable. ... We thought maybe a seizure, but not sure."

Tyer said the team hopes Lefotu can be released Aug. 11, pending the outcome of the tests. He said Lefotu's medical history showed no similar problems, and that the illness was not related to the heat.

It's a big mystery. It sounds like they've ruled out both heat/dehydration and seizure, so it makes you wonder. If it's diabetes, to my knowledge that would be a previously undiagnosed condition.

Whatever it is, though, it's scary.

I'm not sure they've ruled out a seizure. Diabetes or seizure may be a good bet. Although if it was diabetes and he went into insulin shock, I'm not sure he'd be drifting in and out of consciousness. I've only been around one person who went into insulin shock, my business partner who has done so multiple times, and when it gets past the "hazy, confused" stage it's pretty wild ---- severe cramps, pain, screaming, falling down, unconsciousness.
