Skinsfans/SP, do you think RG3 was a 1 year wonder? (1 Viewer)

This has come up in the Wash/Den thread and while I understand RG3 is disappointing FF owners, I refuse to think he is toast as an NFL QB. Has the tide turned in Washington? I would like to see some better players around him before I turn the page but seems like some have made up their minds that everything he did last year was a mirage.

Chime in if you have anything to discuss. I had thought this season would be a wash because of the injury, in fact perhaps he came back early and should have stayed out longer but I can't believe people are saying he is washed up. When did RG3 become Michael Vick?

Absolutely not. But they need to get rid of Kyle Shanahan and get him some receiving help if he's going to succeed. They also obviously told him not to run today. That ties his hands, as well.

And he still got hurt, lol

Coaches always over think it, half these coaches need to be out of this league. Starting with Lil Shanny and Lil Shotty

Kyle Shanahan is a hack and idiot. If I can sit at home and tell what he's going to call before the ball is snapped, every d coordinator in the league can too.

Kind of reminds me of Cam. He'll need to use his wheels to open up the field for him until he learns to be accurate.

I haven't watched the Redskins at all this year with the exception of this game so this is circumstantial and subjective, but I have never been impressed with his read progression. I think he locks onto a receiver too often and it gets him in trouble. If you add this into the fact that he is clearly being told not to run it makes for some very poor decisions.

Until he gets better at his progressions and/or is allowed to run I think he doesn't have the decision making ability to be anything more than a lower half starting QB.

I know I'm going to get blasted for this by the DC fans but it's just an opinion. I'm sure someone has great evidence to counter my argument and I'd love to hear it because his stock can't be lower now and I'd love to go pick him up for cheap if he's actually going to get better.

Needs a real WR core and better coaches for sure.
I don't buy this excuse. Garcon is an above average #1 WR and Reed is a very talented TE. With a productive running back keeping defenses honest he should be playing better than this.

I think what we are seeing this year more than anything is the weakness of the Wash roster. RG3 needs to be full speed and fully healthy to be capable of carrying this Skins team. His limitations due to the knee are exploiting the roster IMO. They lack playmakers in the passing game and running game. RG3 needs to be the playmaker. Right now he can't be.

Need more than 1 WR in the nfl, especially in today's passing league. Don't see ANY other teams with the drops that Moss, Hankerson, Armstrong, and Morgan make EVERY week!

Everyone is to blame, including him. Here's hoping that the offense progresses in the offseason (assuming RGIII is healthy).

Why? I ask because I don't buy it. He is the epitome of a big play #2 that should be hooked in with a solid possession WR1 like he was in Indy. Above average, no consistency IMO.

Just out of curiosity, how many teams (and which ones) currently have that setup? I ask only because I hear this kind of talk often and how to be a great passing team you need this, but I don't think it exists with the exception of a handful of teams.

Exactly. The argument that he needs great coaches and receivers to succeed is garbage and isn't supporting the pro-RG3 side at all. To say RG3 would succeed in RW's situation does what for his cause? All but a few qbs, some of which are successful, are not in that situation.

The definition of a good NFL qb is probably something along the lines of having the ability to overcome a bad situation. RG3, this year, has not shown he can do that

I agree for the most part. The core of the corps is good. The rest of the corps needs an upgrade though. Santana Moss needs to retire. Hankerson and Robinson are too hot/cold. Morgan is forgettable. I think JustinHawkins is underrating Garcon and Reed.

Above average is top 16 and he seems to be in that range. He seems to get open consistently and catches most of his passes (outside of the awful Cowboys game).

Oh we're talking FF? I mean NFL, route running, leadership, ability to stay healthy and always be on the field...I'm not sure he is there yet. If you do CSTU that's great, I just don't share that same opinion.

No way do I see Garçon as one of the top 16 WRs in the NFL. He's a low end WR1 and I'm not really sure he should be a WR1 to be honest. I think he's being overrated because of fantasy stats.

I was just going by the #1's for their team - Calvin, Green, Julio, DT, Marshall, Nelson, Fitz, Cruz, Gordon, Andre...who else? I think after that he's in the conversation.

Dez, Wallace, Harvin, Wayne, T. Smith, Blackmon, Colston, D. Jackson, V. Jackson, S. Smith, Gordon and A. Brown. Like you said, that's not even getting into WR2s on teams. I'm probably forgetting a few as well.

He's not in the top 16 WR's in the league. Top 32 maybe. Garcon was seldom open today, a trait he shared with all the other Redskin receivers. Genius offensive coordinator therefore called almost all passing plays after Denver tied the score and no longer gave the ball to the RB averaging 5 yards a carry.

Dez and Harvin slipped my mind, but the rest, not sure. Blackmon can get there, VJax is just as inconsistent as it Torrey, Colston and Smith are almost done.

Almost done isn't the same as being done. I edited to add Gordon, who is clearly better. I'd also add S. Johnson.

I mean how many teams do you really think he would upgrade their WR1 position? This list is small IMO. Very small.

Ok, here you go:

Pats, Jets, Dolphins, Bills, Steelers, Ravens, Colts (no Wayne), Titans, Jags (though I'm high on Blackmon)Chargers, Raiders, Eagles, Saints, Panther, Bucs, 49ers, Rams.

Wow, we are way too far apart to even bother discussing this any further.

Lol, I hate him because I don't agree with you? I just don't think he's nearly as good as you do.

I don't think he's great by any means and don't own him anywhere, but don't think he's that bad either. I haven't watched him lately so maybe his play has fallen off, he just looked good to me earlier in the season.

Watch him lately. He's not open like he was earlier this year and the early part of last season.

He's one hell of a blocker though, that's undeniable.

He is obviously not an upgrade over D. Jackson or V. Jackson. There are others I'd disagree with, but those are the most obvious.

lol, where was this thread last week? We all overreact both ways in fantasy when player X has good game or bad game. Last week RG3 was back to his old ways and the sky was the limit. He gets pounded today behind his crap OL and now he's a 1 year wonder. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Dude is a 2nd year QB still transitioning to the NFL. They run a gimmick offense to help him, but it doesn't always work. It doesn't help that his OL is not good at pass blocking. I think he definitely has room for improvement, but he's not a 1 year wonder by a long shot.

In 5 years this topic is going to look really funny.
:goodposting:

Griffin's 23 and spent all of this offseason rehabbing from a knee injury that typically entails a 1+ year recovery (as opposed to honing his craft as a quarterback). He hasn't been lighting the league on fire in year 2. Oh well. He'll be fine.

When Tom Brady was 23, he threw 1 completion on 3 attempts for 6 yard. When Aaron Rodgers was 23, he completed 6 passes on 15 attempts for 46 yards. When Drew Brees was 23, he averaged 6.2 yards per attempt and had a sub-80 passer rating. When Russell Wilson was 23, his yearly salary was a college scholarship.

Last year he got a lot of fluky bomb TDs. Those do not happen every year. Even this year, he got a gift bomb TD against the Bears because Tillman and the safety Conte both fell down and mis located the ball that was an easy int. RG3 is way over-rated.

It's simple. He let the fame go to his head. It's a well known fact that he's a camera #####.

In RG "Look at Me"'s mindset:

Photoshoots & Magazine covers > Learning the playbook.

He has 1 first half TD pass this year. He has looked awful and is only being saved by garbage time stats.

His biggest strength as a passer coming into the league was his deep accuracy. Those bomb TDs last year weren't a fluke, they were an example of a scouting report that was right on the money.

As stated, he doesn’t have the strongest arm, but has Philip Rivers-type ball placement on deep routes. Willingness and ability to attack deep forces defenses to cover 100 x 53."

And yet he misses a ton of deep bombs this year. He has no clue how to read a defense. Today he had the ball in his hands forever and could not find an open WR despite playing a crappy pass D without it's best CB in Champ Bailey. Against the Bears, he got one fluke deep TD only because 2 players fell down....otherwise it was the easiest of ints that Tillman never misses.
