Slaton signed with a new agent (1 Viewer)

The biggest chunk of an agent's money comes from the commission off of a new contract. Slaton still has 3 years left on his deal after only playing out his rookie season so far.

Nothing to this yet, but it could be something to keep an eye on.

...and here we go...

Can't blame him, but I have a feeling we are in for a ride.

If he has another great season, it will be in Hou's best interest to get him a long term deal, best for both sides

Houston won't have much interest in giving him any kind of extension this year or next. Schuab is due a $10M roster bonus next year to activate the last 3 years of his contract. Owen Daniels is on a one year RFA tender. DeMeco Ryans is in the last year of his contract. Dunta Robinson was franchised this year. They've got a lot of contracts to work out.

I think you will see knock a couple of those out this year and next year is an uncapped year so they could definitely take care of the rest. The negotiations will begin after Slaton has another great year.

Honest question: how many teams have given extensions to their rookies after only two seasons? Colston and Gates are the only recent ones from memory but one was a 7th round pick and the other was undrafted.

Thats a pretty big question. I know he had a really great year and should be able to recreate that success. The league is littered with players who could not produce a second sucsessfull campaign. Caveat Emptor.

Well, if he puts up the exact same numbers in 09 as he did in 08, I think they will be amenable to discussions. If he exceeds 2008 in 2009 then they will likely be more than amenable.

If he does that halfway through this season I think they'll be open to a new contract.

FWIW, Ray Rice also switched representation.

Could be a similar situation with both in that they expect to excel this year and are setting themselves up for a renegotiation.

I think Ray needs two healthy seasons to get that contract. Slaton I think is farther along than Rice.
