Sleeper Defenses (1 Viewer)

So what defenses are people targeting outside the top 12 or so as sleepers?

I'm intrigued by both the Redskins and the Chiefs. Seems like both have improved personnel wise, though the Chiefs do play in a tough division and their offense could be a wash out if Johnson doesn't play (I'm still assuming he'll be there).

Thoughts?

this is a good thread!

Oakland will be a surprise defense.

Tenn

Washington

GB

Houston

Oakland has a strong secondary, Tenn/Hou/GB are full of young talent..

For those that have seen my rankings - I have Green Bay ranked 5th. Last night they had 3 INTs and 7 sacks. They had 5 sacks in their first PS game with a fumble recovery.

Just keep this to yourself. Shhhh! ;)

I really like the Vikes DEF this season. I believe they were 1st in the league against the run last season. They also have a ball hawking secondary. On offense they will be running the ball so I expect them to be in lots of low scoring games.

2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 3 INTs including 2 returned for a TD in last night's game.

Another vote for the Vikings, maybe b/c I drafted them after all the popular picks were gone (Bears, Ravens, Pats, Chargers, Broncos, Panthers, Dolphins, etc). Scored 2 TDs on Friday night.

Another one I agree with is the Packers, Skins also looking stellar.

Does anyone like the Jets D?

Homer pick here but I like the Bengals. Just 2 season ago they were a top 5 def in fantasy based on their takeaways. They'll of course be terrible in real life but they might just have enough ball hawks to be an average D in fantasy that you can grab in the last round or off the waiver wire if you have to.

honestly, the three on my radar are packers, jets and vikings. a little disappointed to see their popularity in the thread.

Yeah, I think the secret is out on those three. The NFC North is going to be an interesting division this year. Packers, Vikings, and Bears are all improved on defense.

Another vote for the Packers - they have 6 games against the Bears/Lions/Vikings, and games against Oakland, Kansas City, and Washington (teams that all have dicey QB situations). Cullen Jenkins seems to be developing into force on the d-line, AJ Hawk is more experienced, and Harris and Woodson at the corners are good at getting interceptions. I think they'll fly under the radar in many leagues.

I like MINN, but like BUFF more. Very low ADP...and I have them ranked ahead of BALT and behind only CHI.

Depends on your scoring, but if you award points for TOs, Sacks, TDs, and Safeties, the real sleepers are;

GB - My choice for the best defense. Tied for #1 in my book with PITTs this year. Good schedule, good pass rush, good corners.

OAK - high risk, high reward. Ideally, a second defense if you're in a league that takes 2.

MINN - like what they have with Greenway in the lineup.

Green Bay is coming on strong. I am also excited to see what Mangenius can do in year 2 with the Jets.

skins, skins, skins
Why? In my 14 team league, 31 defenses are taken. Only the Skins remain.
London Fletcher will solidify the linebackers and Rocky McIntoch looks real good.Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers, Laron Landry, Sean Taylor is the starting secondaryGregg Williams blitzes and then blitzes some more. Good run offense, they were VERY good 2 years ago, last year injuries killed them. I think they'll be back this year. Just my opinion.

Minnesota is my pick. Just look at what they did against the run last season. They were dominating in that aspect. Add in a few sacks/turnovers from the pass D, and we are looking at a potential stud unit.

Any good combinations that any of you like this year? Last year I rode the MIA and NE defenses in a couple of leagues and that worked well.

I took Miami (round 10) and Indy (round 15)

Shakes out to:

Week 1- Miami vs Wash

Week 2- Indy v Tenn

Week 3- Indy v Houston

Week 4- Miami v Oakland

Week 5- Miami v Houston or Indy v TB

Week 6- Miami v Cleveland

Week 7- Indy v Jax

Week 8- Indy v Carolina or Miami v NYG

Week 9- Indy v NE (only real bad week I see, but with my league if I use Miami in week 8 the points carry over to their bye in week 9)

Week 10- Miami v Buff

Week 11- Indy v KC

Week 12- Indy v Atl

Week 13- Miami v NYJ

Week 14- Miami v Buff

Week 15- Indy v Oakland

Week 16- Indy v Houston

Week 17- Indy v Tenn (yes my league plays week 17)

Also, the Skins have not allowed a TD yet in the preseason. McIntosh looks great in coverage so far, Holdman could not have been any worse. They will blitz A LOT more this year and Landry will be a key guy as he's constantly in the box mixing it up. I don't think this defense will be as good as it was in 2004 or 2005, but it will certainly be one of the most improved and its an atrocity if they're the last defense taken in your league.

Detroit Lions

They will not be good in leagues where you are rewarded for low yardage or points but they will have their fair share of creating turnovers and taking them back for points.

They play in a horrible offensive division and if they can build some sort of confidence as a unit that can create turnovers, the Lions as my "sleeper" defense.

Not sure how Oak and Minn are qualified as surprise Ds? They were 2 of the best Ds in the NFL last year.

Wash, GB and SF are mine.

 I like Oakland too.

Jacksonville and Oakland is a nice combo also. Both go later than I think they should.

JAC @ HOU

JAC vs. ATL

OAK vs CLE

OAK @ MIA

JAC @ KC

JAC vs. HOU

OAK vs. KC

JAC @ TB or OAK @ TEN

OAK vs. HOU

JAC @ TEN

OAK @ MIN

OAK @ KC or JAC vs. BUF

OAK vs. DEN...not the greatest but JAC is @ IND

OAK @ GB

JAC @ PIT not the greatest here either

OAK @ JAC...I'll take JAC in this one

The only problem I have with Oakland is they don't play themselves.

This is also assuming HOU, MIA, KC, MIN, ATL, and CLE will suck. I think they will.
