Sleeper WR (1 Viewer)

I haven't seen a lot of mention of this guy around here. He's got good size 6'2" 211 lbs, and had a decent preseason 5 receptions for 71 yards 14.2 ypg 0 TDs. and some good kickoff returns as well.

He's quietly moved himself up to WR 3-4. I've got him sitting on two of my dynasty league teams. I think he'll have a decent year for a rookie 3rd receiver, but I like his upside.

Thoughts?

I agree very much with thisHowever, I am expecting a dramatic drop in offense. Martz got all the love in STL but Vermeil is(when he was active) a very good offensive mind. I know the same sytem this year etc but I still think the stats drop overall. Tony G made it hard(for FF) to go with their #2 WR, I don't think that's changed esp not if Webb can get some playing time and split with Parker

When was the last time KC had a WR worth playing every week? Despite Green's consistent fantasy value, the KC WRs have been dreadful for about as long as I've been in fantasy, which is 11 years.

Andre Rison anyone?

I used Kennison often enough a couple years back. He was my "regular" WR that fell a little bit. Not a 1000 yard lock but a 900 yard one. Projections/predictions wise, if you break down the top WRs looking at stats from the year before, eventually you cross that 1000 yard mark a little earlier than you wanted. Most years other 900 yard WRs would have a bigger upside or somesuch but he was pretty steady. If you were to add up the number of passes he dropped in the endzone + the number of times he was pushed out at the 1 or 2 yard line, he'd probably be one of the better WRs each year. It was "painful" at times to have him on my FF team and have DirecTV ticket. I would guess(a low guess) 7 a year and it's probably more. Imagine adding 7 TDs to him?

I was not impressed with Webb at all during the Shrine Game practices - he's got a good size/speed combo, but he's soft imo. I think he made the Chiefs more by default (Crap Thorpe getting cut for instance) than because he played his way into the lineup. He could produce some stats if pushed into action, but I don't see a bright future here - I think Marques Colston and Jonathan Orr have better futures among the WRs taken real late in April.

Herm does really seem to like him, FWIW. I saw him mentioned often enough in those Herm Q&A at the Chiefs site

Edwards doens't like ANY WR. He would rather keep the game close and try and win it in the 4th Quarter. The thought of blowing out the other team never crosses his mind. Not good fundamental football. Any WR on a Herm Edwards coached team has little value.

Sure he'd like to keep it close, but for most of his years with the Jets, the defense was pretty good and allowed them to grind it out. If the defense falters, he'll have no choice but to air it out.

I agree with some of this. Here's the way I see it. Sammie Parker is #2, Hall is #3. They will wear out Hall before Webb ever sees the field. They love to move him around and try to get mismatches. The people here in KC don't seem to be too thrilled with Webb. Not sure why. I also think that Herm will impede Webb's progress. I have Webb in a deep dynasty and almost dropped him since I don't think he'll contribute much for atleast another year or two...if ever. I've heard Webb compared to Moose Muhammed (which is why I held on to him assuming the Chiefs would have to get him on the field since they don't have any WR's that scare DB's).I wouldn't even expect double digit receptions from him this year.

Chiefs are looking strongly at Darius Watts former Bronco 2nd round pick from 2004. He would be an upgrade over Sammie Parker in my opinion. Parker was also a draft pick in 2004 for the Chiefs(wonders if Parker is nervous about his signing). If the Chiefs sign him he could likely open up a lot on 3WR sets. Bottom line with Watts is he drops a lot of no a ton of balls that get thrown his way. If Watts signs it would certainly elevate the play of Parker and cement Webb as a developmental player. Most importantly though it would keep Hall fresh for kickoff and punt return duty which is what he has said numerous times to the local media. Halls strength to the Chiefs is in KR and PR duties where he can be a game breaker, and an occasional WR when they need to make something happen or open up the passing lanes when defenders stack the box against Johnson.

Devils advocate

The knock on Watts is his dependability with his hands. Ever since he broke his hand in the college accident he has not been the same reliable starter when thrown to. When was the last time a player was intentionally cut and not lost to free agency that has benefited a team picking them up. Most of the time they get cut for performance or talent issues. At least the ones who get cut for attitude reasons have the talent they are just a cancer in the locker room. Do the off field antics really effect gameday? I believe they do not which is why teams repeatedly gamble on such personalities. With the Chiefs in mind look at the other former Dener WR Eddie Kennison as an example of this. Watts has the speed and attitude but drops to many balls to be a consistent factor. On the flip side he could provide as stated above a benefit to this team that sorely lacks a true gamebreaking talent at WR.

Yes, Herm likes Webb. Webb is great friends with Herm's son. They played together at SDSU, Herm's alma mater, and momma Edwards sent Webb college care packages and cookies all the time. ;) Before the draft, I PMd Bloom and told him the Chiefs were very interested in Webb. A "friend" worked with Webb (sprints), and we talked with his agent before the draft.

I'm a Webb owner who watched him several times as an Aztec. He even tore up my HS alma mater way back. Herm says he drafted Webb because he gives them a physical presence at WR. Something they don't have. Bloom says he looked soft at his all-star game. There's a difference between tough and physical. Webb will use his size and strength to gain an advantage and make a play-- physical. He does seem to shy away from contact and play soft at times - not tough? Maybe.

He didn't have a great camp and shoot up the depth chart like a few other rook wrs have. He fell into WR4 almost by default (or 2nd degree nepotism). Parker looked great early in the offseason and Green claimed Parker was in for a break out year. Kennison is WR1 on this team until further notice. Herm wants to see the ball in Dante Hall's hands much more than Vermeil did (we've heard this before though). There probably isn't much left for Webb this season.

Webb has good size and good speed, he runs good routes and has good hands, but you like to see the word great in there somewhere when describing a rook trying to make it in the NFL. We'll see. I like him, but my expectations aren't much (mostly just hoping). He has a huge ego, and that will hopefully translate into a great work ethic as he has now been thoroughly humbled by the task at hand.

The last time I saw him he was head to head with Hank Baskett in Qualcomm. I reported here in the SP that I saw two NFL quality receivers that day, but Baskett was the one who looked like he translated to the next level. Webb has the tools but he has his work cut out for him. He is on a perfect team to dig out a future, and he has a big supporter in his head coach.

Rod Smith recently commented on Watts and what a very fine line there is between NFL starter and being out of the league. The reason I drafted Webb in rd 6 of a rookie draft is because Herm Edwards will try to keep him on the right side of that fine line. If he'd been drafted elsewhere, I would have drafted someone else.
