I play in many leagues each year but in my main league I love to talk smack with my league mates. I don't harbor any superstitions so I talk smack freely and without fear. Over the course of 7+ years I am the only one who talks smack with any regularity. I have always wondered why this was the case and last week a number of my mates admitted that their lack of smack talk was due to their superstitions about it biting them in the hind end. As proof of such, they brought to my attention that the last few guys other than myself who talked smack immediately went on losing streaks. Apparently smack talking superstitions are a prevalent theme with members of this league other than myself.

So, I was just wondering if most folks out there harbor the same superstitions or not.

Thanks for your time.

The fantasy gods are vengeful and should be feared.
:this:I'll talk smack if it's a game I expect to lose (severely outmatched), but never in a playoff game, and certainly not when I'm a heavy favourite. That's just ASKING for trouble.

My last weeks smack before MNF.

Had Ryan VS Brees, Turner, and Gonzo.

"I taunt you...you're going to have to take down your walls of posters of Uncle Drew when he falls short...I taunt you...a second time"

"Monday, Monday, Monday, Michael "barely scoring like a 2nd fantasy RB" Turner, Tony "My time has past" Gonzalez, and Drew "overated" Brees!!! Nya, nya, nya nya!"

"My fantasy football week 8 fate, I'm taunting you too."

Victory by 5.

It's all fun and I try to not use stuff you would hear in junior high.

I avoid taunting at ALL COSTS. It has bitten me several times in the past. In fact, 2 years ago in my fantasy baseball league I was leading the league by a large margin at the All Star Break. I spent the break busting the chops of the entire league, especially the 2nd and 3rd place guys. My roster was amazing and there was NO WAY I wasn't winning the regular season.

So...the week after the break I'm offered Chase Utley in a deal (I'm a Phillies fan, so of course I'm taking the trade) for a decent, but not equal value 2nd basemen. It was a no-brainer and I got my favorite player in return. I'm bouncing off walls I'm so happy. Yeah...Utley breaks his wrist...I lose 2 pitchers and a closer to injury and ALL THREE OF MY OUTFIELDERS to injury for a couple weeks at a time!!!!!!!!! Not a joke...you don't F with the fantasy gods. I ended up losing in the first round of the playoffs that year and barely made it in at that as the last seed.

Now, I build up the my opponents. Rather than taunting I tell them how great they are and how far superior their team is to mine. Again, I'm not joking and I think it ticks them off more than taunting.

Result? 3 football leagues last year. Playoffs in all of them, finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. Won the baseball league, finished 2nd in it this year and am currently in 4 FF leagues and am tied for 1st or in 1st alone in 3 and tied for 3rd in the other.

Am I superstitious? You betcha!

Ah yes... the opposite of angering the fantasy gods -- the ever-popular kibosh.

I'm hesitant to even post in this thread after angering the fantasy gods already this season. I started 3-0 with the "high score of the week" twice in the first three weeks. I was playing the other 3-0 team in week 4, to be followed by 5 straight games against 0-3 and 1-2 teams and wanted to get some chatter on the boards to liven up the league (there is almost zero communication between owners all season. There was only 1 trade this year, and I did not receive a single offer despite being the only team that had players listed "on the block". It's a very quiet and inactive group.).

I got crushed. I've been 1-4 since making the only comment of any kind on the message boards this season. I've been extremely unlucky, I've got a good squad but I keep running into guys having miracle weeks against me. I lost to an 0-5 team after Hakeem Nicks caught a ricochet for a TD in the last few minutes of a game. Another week all my players but one played early games, locking up all my roster spots, leaving me without options when Mike Sims-Walker was a late afternoon scratch and I lost by 4. Last week I barely lost when my opponent's D got a sixth turnover against Warner... my opponent was so inactive he didn't even start a kicker that week, but there was nothing I could do when Carolina got 24 FP off Warner's arm.

I guess that's why everyone else is quiet.

If talking smack is fun for you...do it. If not...don't. Certainly don't let some lame superstition stop you from doing so.

The owners who refrain from smack talk because of superstitions are the same owners who are too paralyzed to makes any trades.

Two weeks ago, I told my opponent to "Touch my Breaston" as I started Steve Breaston against him...I lost by two points, but I did not care. It was pretty funny...

Basically, if you talk smack and lose, everyone laughs at your expense, but it is all in good fun. If you talk smack and win, you look like Nostradamus. It really is a no lose...you can tell I am not supersticious...

I play in 4 leagues and talk smack in all of them (as I write this the fantasy GODS are screwing me over), as of now I am undefeated in two and only lost 1 game in another! However the one where I talk smak the least I have a record of 2-6???? go figure that one out... Im sure after this I will be lose in my 2 undefeated leagues! DAMN YOU FOR THIS POST!!! :wall:

I must add that in the league that I am 2-7, I drafted Roy Williams, Anthony Gonzalez, Jamal Lewis, and Julius Jones in no particular order... and had Jennings, who has struggled mightily!

People who think their unimportant banter is going to have an impact on what is going to happen are simply narcissistic. Are any of the players on your team going give a crap about you boasting? They aren't going to say, "Oh this fantasy football guy is expecting me to do well. Just to spite him, I am going to suck today." I'll trash talk at all possible times. It makes the games actually interesting an even if you lose, at least you had fun doing it.

Have you ever trash talked and won? Where is the superstition for that? It sounds like you guys are afraid to step up to the plate when it backfires.
